Abstract

Anxiety is one of the affective variables that affect the process of learning a foreign language. The study of anxiety in the field of learning Japanese as a foreign language, especially in universities in Indonesia, is still lacking. High level anxiety is considered a factor that impedes students from achieving good performance. This study aims at investigating the level of anxiety, the relationship among students’ anxiety and gender, and the students’ ability based JLPT level. The design of this study is survey research. The sample was taken from undergraduate students of the Japanese Literature Study Program (N=91). The data was collected by using Horwitz’s (1986) Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) questionnaire with four factors analysis from Aida (1994). The findings revealed that students’ anxiety was on the moderate level. Moreover, there was no significant correlation between gender and student’s anxiety. However, students’ anxiety affected students’ ability related to their JLPT level.

Abstract

This research attempted to discover the positive self-presentation built by Ahok as the speaker and the former of DKI Jakarta governor through his speech in front of Kepulauan Seribu residents. It is done by applying Fairclough’s CDA involving conventional implicature, positive connotation, speech act, and political communication. The result of the study shown that there were eight positive characters representing positive self-presentation found in the study which suggested that Ahok had a firm, simple, wise, discipline, fair, caring, positive thinking, and confident personality. The Firmness was manifested in nine data, the simplicity appeared in two data, the wisdom occurred in ten data, the discipline revealed in three data, the fairness were presented in three data, the care was realized in two data, the positive thinking come up in one datum, and the confidence appeared in four data. Thus from those finding, it could be drawn as the conclusion that firmness and wisdom were the positive-self presentations mostly delivered by Ahok in his speech.

Abstract

Papua is the eastern-most part of Indonesia, comprising the left half of the island of New Guinea. Lani is a group of people or tribe living in the mountains of Jayawijaya Papua, and they speak Lani language as their local language. The language used for formal purposes in Papua is Indonesian. However, many Lani people cannot speak Indonesian correctly. This study examined the phonological interference of Lani language on the spoken Indonesian of Lani native speakers in Malang. This research used descriptive qualitative with content analysis. The respondents were five native speakers of Lani living in Malang for less than a year. The 200 Swadesh wordlist (1971) was used to collect data of spoken Indonesian from the Lani native speakers to show the phonological interference of Lani on Indonesian. This research revealed two important findings: (1) the pronunciation of Indonesian words spoken by Lani native speakers was interfered with Lani phonological rules, in which the respondents tend to substitute the sounds of Indonesian which do not exist in Lani with Lani’s sounds, (2) the respondents intended to make the pronunciation of a second language (Indonesian) easier. This happened because they experienced difficulties in producing several phonemes of Indonesian not existing in Lani’s phonological system.

Abstract

One of the cultural heritages in Indonesia which tell about the social life or human nature is puppet show or “Wayang”. This research investigates Illocutionary Acts and Politeness Strategies Implied in one of the Puppet Show Characters “Bambang Wisanggeni”. This study aims to reveal the types of illocutionary acts and politeness strategies. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected from the transcript of Bambang Wisanggeni’s story. The study revealed that the types of illocutionary acts found in Bambang Wisanggeni’s story were directive, assertive, commissive, and expressive. However, declarative act was not evident in this study since the character of Bambang Wisanggeni did not have power to do immediate changes with his utterances. Meanwhile, the types of politeness strategies found in Bambang Wisanggeni’s utterances were bald on record strategy, positive politeness, and negative politeness. Off record strategies was not observed in this study because the whole utterance stated by the Bambang Wisanggeni was stated directly and clearly.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the maxim flouted and the reasons for conveying social criticism done by Abdurrahmin Arsyad in stand-up comedy season 4. This was a descriptive research with an observation method applied to collect data. The data were in the form of the utterances of Abdurrahim’s performance on stage, while the data source was taken from some videos of Abdurrahmin Arsyad’s.The results showed four types of maxim were flouted: quantity, quality, relevance, and manner maxims. The reasons for those flouted maxims were to amuse the audience.To indicate politeness in conveying criticism, Abdurrahim also chose metaphor, rhetoric question, and irony through humor way.

Abstract

AbstractThis study investigated the types of assimilation that occur in children’s connected speech in selected “HiHo Kids” videos. Descriptive qualitative method was applied in this study. The source of the data were six videos from “HiHo Kids” YouTube channel, particularly the ones from the section of “Kids Try” that were uploaded in September to November 2019. The data collection process involves watching and transcribing the videos manually. Two research instruments, namely the official website of Oxford Learner’s Dictionary (https://oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com) and IPA transcription website (https://ipa.typeit.org/), were used for this study, in order to check the correct pronunciation of North American (NAmE) accent, as well as typing the phonetic symbols. In terms of data analysis, the researchers identified the findings based on the theories of assimilation types by Roach (1998) and Crystal (2008). The results revealed that regressive assimilation is the most prevalent type that occurs in children’s connected speech in the selected videos, though progressive and coalescent assimilation also occur in certain cases.Keywords: assimilation, children’s connected speech, HiHo Kids videos Abstrak Studi ini menyelidiki jenis asimilasi yang terjadi pada ujaran terhubung anak-anak dalam video "HiHo Kids". Metode deskriptif kualitatif diterapkan dalam penelitian ini. Sumber datanya adalah enam video dari channel YouTube “HiHo Kids”, khususnya dari bagian “Kids Try” yang diunggah pada September hingga November 2019. Proses pengumpulan data meliputi menonton dan mentranskripsikan video tersebut secara manual. Dua instrumen penelitian, yaitu situs resmi Oxford Learner's Dictionary (https://oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com) dan situs transkripsi IPA (https://ipa.typeit.org/), digunakan untuk penelitian ini, guna memeriksa kebenarannya. pengucapan aksen Amerika Utara (NAmE), serta mengetik symbol fonetik. Dalam hal analisis data, peneliti mengidentifikasi temuan berdasarkan teori tipe asimilasi menurut Roach (1998) dan Crystal (2008). Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa asimilasi regresif adalah jenis yang paling umum terjadi pada ujaran terhubung anak-anak di video yang dipilih, meskipun asimilasi progresif dan penggabungan juga terjadi dalam kasus tertentu.Kata kunci: asimilasi, percakapan anak-anak, video HiHo Kids

Abstract

AbstractAs a lingua franca, English has become a prominent language to learn outside English-spoken countries. Especially in Indonesia, English slowly takes over the social life of Indonesian citizens and now serves several significant purposes, including within educational setting. Yet, within educational setting the burden to learn English become a challenging part for EFL learners in Indonesia, as they face several difficulties regarding the pronunciation of English words. Therefore, this paper serves as a pilot literature study to examine the research surrounding English pronunciation by EFL learners all over Indonesia. From 8 research papers compiled, it is found that there are three significant aspects that can be drawn out: 1) English vowels and consonants shift by EFL learners, 2) factors influencing Indonesian EFL learners’ pronunciation, and 3) the instruments and media used by Indonesian researchers to monitor the pronunciation. It shows that indeed there are vowels and consonants shift when EFL learners try to pronounce English words, and the factors that affect their pronunciation includes their mother tongue influence, the exposure of target language, and lastly their biological factor such as their ear perception. It is also revealed that there are not much of instruments used by Indonesian researchers to monitor the pronunciation of either research participants or native speakers of English within the scope of their research. There are only two papers that use Speechnote and Praat as their instruments, and other researchers rely on their own perception when monitoring the English sounds.Keywords: pronunciation difficulties, EFL learners, vowels and consonant shift, instruments, Speechnote, Praat AbstrakSebagai lingua franca, bahasa Inggris telah menjadi bahasa yang paling menonjol untuk dipelajari oleh masyarakat yang tidak menggunakan bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa utamanya. Contohnya, pengaruh bahasa Inggris di Indonesia sudah menjalar ke berbagai aspek kehidupan masyarakat dan memiliki berbagai peran khusus, termasuk perannya di ranah pendidikan. Meskipun begitu, para pelajar EFL (English as a foreign language) di Indonesia masih merasa kesulitan dalam mempelajari bahasa Inggris, utamanya ketika dihadapkan dengan pengucapan kata-kata berbahasa Inggris. Maka dari itu, studi literatur ini bertujuan untuk mengobservasi penelitian-penelitian yang meneliti pengucapan kata-kata bahasa Inggris oleh pelajar EFL di seluruh Indonesia. Dari 8 penelitian yang dikumpulkan, ada tiga aspek penting yang mendasari penelitian-penelitian tersebut, antara lain: 1) pergeseran suara vokal dan konsonan bahasa Inggris oleh pelajar EFL, 2) faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi akuratnya pengucapan para pelajar EFL Indonesia, dan 3) instrumen atau media yang dipakai oleh para peneliti Indonesia untuk memonitor akurasi pengucapan. Dari observasi, ditemukan bahwa memang ada pergeseran suara vokal dan konsonan ketika para pelajar EFL dites pengucapannya. Pengaruh bahasa ibu, paparan bahasa target, dan faktor biologis seperti persepsi telinga menjadi faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi akurasi pengucapan para pelajar yang diteliti. Terakhir, ditemukan juga bahwa tidak banyak instrumen dan media yang digunakan untuk memonitor akurasi pengucapan dalam penelitian-penelitian ini. Hanya ada dua penelitian yang menggunakan Speechnote dan Praat sebagai instrumennya, sedangkan peneliti lainnya menggunakan persepsi mereka sendiri ketika memonitor pelafalan kata-kata berbahasa Inggris.Kata kunci: kesulitan pengucapan, pelajar EFL, pergeseran vokal dan konsonan, instrument, Speechnote, Praat

Abstract

AbstractEnglish as an international language has been learned for various purposes. However, not all students can achieve their goals in learning English, one of many factors influencing their success in learning English is their own beliefs. This research aimed at investigating students’ beliefs about English language learning and English academic achievement. Descriptive and correlation design, quantitative method was applied in this research. The English scores of 50 fifth-semester students of IAIN Samarinda and their responses to Beliefs About Language Learning Inventory (BALLI) were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson Product Moment correlation. The results showed that the beliefs about motivation and expectation were the one mostly held by the students, followed by the nature of language learning, learning and communication strategies, foreign language aptitude, and the difficulty of language learning. There was positive and strong correlation between students’ beliefs about language learning and their English academic achievement (r = .597).Keywords: BALLI, English academic achievement, English language learning beliefs AbstrakBahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa internasional telah dipelajari untuk berbagai tujuan. Namun, tidak semua siswa dapat mencapai tujuannya dalam belajar bahasa Inggris, salah satu faktor yang mempengaruhi keberhasilan mereka dalam belajar bahasa Inggris adalah keyakinan mereka sendiri. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui keyakinan siswa tentang pembelajaran bahasa Inggris dan prestasi akademik bahasa Inggris. Desain deskriptif dan korelasi, metode kuantitatif digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Nilai bahasa Inggris 50 mahasiswa semester lima IAIN Samarinda dan tanggapan mereka terhadap Beliefs About Language Learning Inventory (BALLI) dianalisis menggunakan statistik deskriptif dan korelasi Product Moment Pearson. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa keyakinan tentang motivasi dan harapan paling banyak dianut oleh siswa, diikuti oleh sifat belajar bahasa, strategi pembelajaran dan komunikasi, bakat bahasa asing, dan kesulitan belajar bahasa. Ada korelasi positif dan kuat antara keyakinan siswa tentang pembelajaran bahasa dan prestasi akademik bahasa Inggris mereka (r = .597).Kata kunci: BALLI, Prestasi akademik bahasa Inggris, keyakinan belajar bahasa Inggris

Abstract

AbstractThe aim of this research was to characterize the cultural values of Minangkabau in A Complete Anthology of the Short Stories of A.A. Navis and the implications of the research on the literature teaching at the Senior High School. This was a qualitative research focusing on content analysis. The contents analyzed related to the Minangkabau kinship system and social community. The descriptive method was used in this research. The object of the research was A.A. Navis's Comprehensive Short Stories Anthology. Based on the results of the research, the cultural values of Minangkabau have been revealed throughout the A.A Navis' Complete Anthology of Short Stories. Navis viewed as follows: (1) the relationship between mother and children, (2) the relationship between father and children, (3) the relationship between uncle and his nieces and nephews, (4) the relationship between children in law and parents in law, (5) the marriage in Minangkabau. The implication of this research in the reading class was: (1) expressing interesting things in the short story of thoughtdiscussion; (2) expressing cultural values in the short story of thought-discussion. AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkarakterisasi nilai-nilai budaya Minangkabau dalam Antologi Lengkap Cerpen A.A. Navis dan implikasi penelitian terhadap pembelajaran sastra di SMA. Ini adalah penelitian kualitatif yang berfokus pada analisis isi. Isi yang dianalisis terkait dengan sistem kekerabatan dan sosial kemasyarakatan Minangkabau. Metode deskriptif digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Objek penelitian adalah A.A. Antologi Cerita Pendek Komprehensif Navis. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, nilai-nilai budaya Minangkabau yang terungkap dalam Antologi Cerpen Lengkap A.A Navis. Navis adalah sebagai berikut: (1) hubungan ibu dan anak, (2) hubungan ayah dan anak, (3) hubungan paman dan keponakan, (4) hubungan menantu dan orang tua dalam hukum, (5) perkawinan di Minangkabau. Implikasi dari penelitian ini di kelas membaca adalah: (1) mengungkapkan hal-hal yang menarik dalam cerpen diskusi pemikiran; (2) mengungkapkan nilai-nilai budaya dalam cerpen diskusi pemikiran.

Abstract

AbstractGrasping the cultural identity in a society is the characteristic and signifier to the existence and dimension of society in their life. Life of community in the broadest sense exists in paradigm of reflection and representation in the plots of norm, ideology, tradition and aesthetic involved in and it should not be the dichotomy in space and time in transferring the meaning of life. It is the forms of integrity, responsibility in orders of values, hope, ideals and future. The article represents the life of human being in following, encouraging, accompanying, even fighting for how to reach the cultural identity in terms of rational and historical times. Colored with the problems of social stratification, race, and gender, this novel tries to convey the forms of paradoxical analyses and sharp elaboration in the structure of oxymoron implying on the studies of culture in a society as to find out the self-identity. The analyses of the research are in the approach of post-modernism discussed as the reaction to the established modern era and its colors, meanwhile the data are analyzed in terms of qualitative method with the techniques of interpretative qualitative in the steps of comprehensive data reading, meaning interpretation and critical analysis.Keywords: Cultural Identity, Song of Solomon, Post-Modern AbstrakMemegang identitas budaya dalam masyarakat merupakan karakteristik dan penanda eksistensi dan dimensi kehidupan masyarakat. Kehidupan masyarakat dalam makna luas ada dalam paradigma refleksi dan representasi dalam alur norma, ideologi, tradisi dan estetika di dalamnya dan seharusnya tidak ada dikotomi ruang dan waktu dalam mentransfer makna kehidupan. Hidup merupakan bentuk integritas dan tanggung jawab dalam tatanan nilai, harapan, cita-cita dan masa depan. Artikel ini merepresentasikan kehidupan manusia dalam mengikuti, mendorong, mengiringi, bahkan berjuang meraih identitas budaya dalam terminologi rasionalitas dan kesejarahan. Diwarnai masalah-masalah stratifikasi sosial, ras, dan jenis kelamin, novel ini mencoba mengungkapkan bentuk-bentuk paradoks dan uraian tajam dalam struktur oxymoron berimplikasi pada kajian budaya dalam masyarakat untuk menemukan jati dirinya. Analisis penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan post-modernisme mendiskusikan reaksi terhadap kemapanan era modern dan segala bentuk warnanya, sedangkan data dianalisis menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan teknik kualitatif interpretatif melalui langkah-langkah membaca data secara komprehensif, interpretasi makna dan analisis kritis.Kata Kunci: Identitas Budaya, Song of Solomon, Post-Modernisme.
