Abstract

Arabic language (AL) proficiency is a crucial element in understanding classical Islamic texts, or Kitab Kuning (KK), and plays a central role in the curriculum of pesantren (Islamic boarding schools). However, students often face difficulties mastering Arabic due to its complex grammar and vocabulary. This study aims to identify the challenges faced in mastering Arabic and the relationship between Arabic proficiency and the ability to read KK among students, particularly in Pesantren in Tapal Kuda region. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method. Data were collected from members of pesantren families in Tapal Kuda region, including Kyai, Nyai, Ning, Lora, pesantren administrators, as well as teachers (Ustadz and Ustadzah) and students. Data collection was carried out through observation and conversation methods with recording and note-taking techniques, as well as reflective introspective methods. Interviews were conducted to explore factors influencing Arabic proficiency and its impact on the ability to read KK. The collected data were analyzed through reduction, classification, verification, tabulation, and interpretation. The study's findings indicate that: 1) Arabic serves as an academic identity of pesantren; 2) Arabic is a central medium in KK; 3) Issues related to Arabic proficiency in the context of KK. Besides, the research findings include several factors and recommendations, namely; 1) factors impeding Arabic mastery include limited access to adequate educational resources, ineffective teaching methods, and variations in students' educational backgrounds; and 2) the findings suggest that the ability to read KK is significantly affected by the level of Arabic proficiency, particularly in aspects of grammar and vocabulary understanding. This study is expected to contribute to the development of more effective Arabic teaching strategies in pesantren and improve students' abilities to read and comprehend KK.

Abstract

Causal conjunctions play a crucial role in building relationships between propositions in literature. This research analyzes the types and functions of causal conjunctions in conveying cause-effect relationships. The study uses data from Kaylnn Bayron's novel "This Wicked Fate" to offer a unique perspective on causal conjunction usage. Data collection employed the observation method to identify types and functions of causal conjunctions. This was followed by descriptive qualitative analysis. Findings were presented using both formal and informal methods. The analysis identified four types of causal conjunctions. These include general causal relations (10 data), specific causal relations (3 data), conditional relations (26 data), and general reversed causal relations (20 data). Conditional relations emerged as the most prevalent type. Functionally, the study observed 36 data of external function and 23 data of internal function. The external function was found to be predominant. This research demonstrates how causal conjunctions form logical sentences. It reveals the ways authors express cause and effect through various conjunction types and functions. The study contributes to our understanding of how causal relationships are linguistically constructed in literary texts. It provides insights into the nuanced use of language in narrative contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the linguistic style used in the comment section of the Instagram account @Erina_S_Gudono using a semantic approach. The focus of the research is on the meanings of words, phrases, and linguistic signs used in netizens' comments, particularly in the sarcasm language. This research employs a qualitative method, where data is collected from comments left by netizens on posts from this account during the period of August 2024. The findings indicate that sarcasm is the dominant linguistic style, with the use of the word malu (shame) frequently appearing in the context of criticism toward actions or sarcastic phrases on the @Erina_S_Gudono account. Netizens use sarcasm as a way to express disappointment or dissatisfaction, employing words that contain sharp insinuations and social critique. The main conclusion of this research is that sarcasm in Instagram comments often serves as a tool to convey criticism in an indirect yet emotionally charged manner, which has the potential to create an aggressive online communication environment. This study provides insights into the dynamics of language use on social media and how semantics plays a role in uncovering the hidden meanings of language interactions on digital platforms.

Abstract

This research analyzes the Yamaha Fazzio advertisement using Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach, emphasizing the interplay between verbal and visual sign in constructing a compelling brand narrative. The Yamaha Fazzio advertisement was chosen as the object of study because of its high popularity in the Indonesian market, as well as its unique branding strategy by targeting young, tech-savvy consumers, making it relevant to current market trends. The analysis examines various scenes from the advertisement, showcasing how components such as color, imagery, and textual cues contribute to the portrayal of the Yamaha Fazzio as a symbol of modernity, innovation, and a dynamic lifestyle. Specifically, this research aims to analyze how the verbal and visual signs in Yamaha Fazzio advertisements convey messages regarding product identity and branding. Additionally, this study applies Wierzbicka's color theory to explore the psychological and cultural associations of color in advertisements, offering deeper insights into how semiotics can shape consumer perception and behavior in digital marketing. By integrating these theoretical frameworks, the research underscores the significance of effective communication in advertising and its impact on engaging a tech-savvy audience.

The role of the host is directly tied to communication. The host needs to be able to get the information they need while still being polite. The purpose of this study is to determine how the tact maxim is applied and formulated as a politeness strategy. Note-taking and non-participant observation techniques were used to gather the data for this study, which can be found on the official Kick Andy YouTube channel and website. This study made application of Leech's (2014) politeness theory, which talks about tact maxims. According to the study's findings, the host of the 2019 Kick Andy talk show applied the tact maxim, one of the neg-politeness maxims, to lessen the amount of pressure placed on the guest. Declarative and interrogative structured utterances, interrogative utterance, subtle imperative, and conditional relationship clause are all used to realize the tact maxim. It can be concluded that the host can obtain sufficient information while remaining polite by implementing the tact maxim, which is a form of politeness. As a result, the interview goes well, and the host's questions don't burden the guest.

Abstract

Gender is a concept that refers to the roles, behaviors, activities, and attributes deemed appropriate for men and women within a particular culture or society. Gender socialization has traditionally been carried out by spreading messages, discourses, values, norms, beliefs, and models that represent specific gender representations. Textbooks are one of the tools for cultural socialization, including the concept of gender. If textbooks address gender issues without further understanding, it can confuse students. The aim of this research is to analyze how gender is represented in textbooks, the existence of gender representation inequality, and to determine whether the textbook used still contains gender stereotypes or gender bias. This research uses a qualitative method with a content analysis approach. The subject of this study is the English textbook titled Bright an English Course for SMP/MTs Grade VIII, authored by Nur Zaida. Data analysis techniques are based on six aspects from Logsdon’s framework. The results of this study show gender inequality in the analyzed textbook, particularly in the aspect of Patterns of Mentioning Female/Male Names. Female names were mentioned only 3 times, contributing 23% of the total mentions, whereas male names were mentioned 10 times, contributing 77%. Therefore, there is a clear difference in the number of mentions between females and males, with males being much more frequently mentioned. The 54% difference indicates a significant imbalance in gender representation in the context of name mentions.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze intonation patterns in the pronunciation of imperative sentences in Arabic. Intonation is a pattern of pitch changes produced by the speaker when pronouncing a sentence or its parts, which greatly affects the meaning of the utterance. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods in the form of verbal data analysis. PRAAT application is used for spectral analysis and sound frequency measurement. The results showed that the common intonation patterns in Arabic imperative sentences are /2-3-1/ and /3-2-1/, in accordance with the theory proposed by Al-Aini. Of the six participants, four of them have intonation patterns that match the native speaker's speech patterns, while the other two participants show variations of intonation patterns that do not match. Factors such as mother tongue influence, inappropriate emphasis or nabr, and ignorance of intonation patterns contributed to the difference. The findings are expected to help in Arabic language teaching, particularly in the phonetic aspect of harf halq, as well as contributing to the fields of Arabic linguistics and Arabic language education.

Abstract

This study explores the intricate relationship between language and cultural rituals through an ethnolinguistic examination of traditional wedding ceremonies on Kisar Island, Indonesia. Traditional wedding rituals serve not only as celebratory events but also as mediums to preserve and transmit cultural values, identity, and social norms. The study highlights how language is employed as a vital tool for conveying symbolic meanings, maintaining traditions, and reinforcing ethnic identity. Utilizing a qualitative ethnographic approach, the research captures the linguistic and cultural dimensions of the Kisar wedding ceremony, focusing on specific elements such as the Konoknohi (notification of happy news), Raikorwuku (family gatherings), and Trang Kampung (wedding processions). Findings reveal that language serves multifaceted roles, including as a means of communication, a marker of social structure, and a reflection of collective identity. Key linguistic practices, such as the use of opening greetings, ritual speeches, and symbolic terms, are shown to embody respect, unity, and cultural continuity. Moreover, the study emphasizes the symbolic significance of material contributions (Takuraram), ritual activities like drinking sopi, and gestures such as nose-kissing, which collectively foster familial harmony and solidarity. By analyzing these linguistic and cultural elements, the research provides valuable insights into how traditional rituals sustain cultural heritage and social cohesion across generations. This ethnolinguistic perspective contributes to broader understandings of the interplay between language, culture, and identity within the context of traditional practices.
