Abstract

As globalization continues to accelerate, the need for English proficiency among healthcare professionals has become increasingly crucial, especially in the context of international and multicultural healthcare services. This study examines healthcare professionals' perceptions of the importance of English language training in their professional practice in Indonesia. Using a qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, and administrative staff, working at two international hospitals in Jakarta. The main objective of this study is to understand the need for English language training, the challenges faced in acquiring language proficiency, and recommendations for improving English language training programs tailored to the medical context. The results of the study show that most participants acknowledge the important role of English in enhancing patient care, workplace efficiency, and professional development. The main challenges identified include the lack of specific English for Medical Purposes (EMP) programs, limited time due to busy work schedules, and psychological barriers such as lack of confidence and fear of making mistakes. While general English courses are available, participants highlighted their inadequacy in meeting the specific language demands of the medical field, such as medical terminology, patient interactions, and professional communication. Participants recommended the development of EMP courses tailored to real-world medical scenarios, flexible training schedules, and collaborative learning methods such as role-playing. They emphasized that addressing these gaps in training would not only improve communication skills but also contribute to better healthcare outcomes. This study provides valuable insights into the role of English in the medical field and stresses the need for evidence-based curriculum design that accommodates the unique needs of healthcare professionals. Additionally, the study offers practical recommendations for policymakers, educators, and hospital administrators to enhance the effectiveness of English language training programs in medical institutions

Abstract

The pro-Israel product boycott campaign, initiated in October 2023, has had a significant impact on consumer behavior, particularly within the coffee industry. Starbucks, often perceived as linked to Israel, has been one of the brands most affected by this movement. This study employs a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach to examine the linguistic features and underlying motivations expressed in the discourse surrounding the boycott, with a specific focus on Starbucks in discussions on X (formerly Twitter) in Indonesia. CDA is particularly suited for this study as it allows for an in-depth exploration of power dynamics, ideological positioning, and social influences embedded in digital discourse. Using Martin and White’s Appraisal Theory, the research analyzes how attitudes—expressed through affect, judgment, and appreciation—shape language choices and construct interpersonal meanings in boycott-related discussions, revealing how public sentiment is mobilized and reinforced through discourse. The analysis identifies three dominant types of attitudes: judgment, appreciation, and affect, with judgment being the most prevalent. The findings suggest that the discourse reflects strong sentiments of anger and concern toward the Israel-Palestine conflict, as well as a collective stance in support of the boycott. These attitudes are expressed through language that critiques Starbucks and expresses solidarity with the Palestinian cause. The study’s time frame, spanning from October 25, 2023, to August 15, 2024, may limit the scope of the findings, but provides a focused view of the discourse during a key period in the boycott movement. This research contributes to understanding how social media discourse shapes consumer activism and the public’s relationship with global brands during politically charged times.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of digitalization presents challenges for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students in developing speaking skills. The widespread use of online games often leads to passive behavior, limiting opportunities for oral communication practice. In an increasingly competitive world, proficient speaking skills combined with critical thinking are essential for effective communication and problem-solving. To address this gap, the card game "The Witchy" was developed as an innovative, interactive solution. The game provides an engaging platform for students to practice communication while enhancing critical thinking skills. This study adopted the Research and Development (R&D) model by Borg and Gall (1983) to design, test, and refine the game. Data were collected through classroom observations, pre-tests, and post-tests to evaluate improvements in fluency, vocabulary usage, and sentence structure. The findings revealed three key outcomes: (a) "The Witchy" positively impacted students’ speaking fluency, vocabulary, and sentence structure by offering dynamic and practical learning opportunities; (b) the game effectively promoted critical thinking and communication skills by requiring students to strategize and articulate their ideas; and (c) its motivational aspects fostered long-term engagement and active participation in English learning. Qualitative data, including classroom observations and student interactions, further supported the game’s effectiveness. This study demonstrates the potential of game-based learning in language education, offering a practical approach to improving speaking skills and fostering higher-order thinking in EFL students.

Abstract

This study examines the use of illocutionary acts in the public’s reactions to Donald Trump’s tweets on X (formerly Twitter) during his 2024 presidential campaign, guided by Searle's felicity theory. We analyse posts from the official Donald J. Trump account on X from September 1-30, 2024, using qualitative methods in digital setting, with the researcher as the primary instrument. The study is descriptive and inductive, focusing on the content and meaning of illocutionary acts and public reactions, rather than numerical data or predefined hypotheses. Our aim is to understand how these acts influence public reactions, which we categorize as negative or positive, to reveal the link between Trump’s tweets and their role in political discourse. The results show that the directive act dominate Trump’s tweets, reflecting his intent to influence behaviour. Meanwhile some of the tweets meet Searle’s felicity conditions, others do not, resulting polarized public reactions. Trump’s communication appears partially effective, reinforcing support within his base while provoking backlash from critics, highlighting how illocutionary force in social media can shape political strategies and deepen public divides

Abstract

Èngghi-bhunten (E-B) is the most refined form of the Madurese language (ML), used when speaking to respected individuals or those considered noble, such as Kyai or members of a pesantren family. The use of E-B aims to express respect and appreciation in communication. This study examines the role of E-B language in shaping children's morality, particularly in relation to preferences within rural communities. E-B not only serves as a means of communication but also as an important cultural tool in the process of socialization. In rural Madurese communities, parents tend to prioritize the use of this language to instill values and moral principles in their children. This research aims to understand how language, particularly E-B, reflects and reinforces social norms, ethical behavior, and traditional values within society. By analyzing interactions between parents and children, this study reveals the close relationship between language choice and moral teaching as well as parental guidance. This research employs a qualitative approach, with data consisting of words, phrases, and sentences obtained from the rural community. Data collection techniques include simak libat cakap method. It involves listening to and recording interactions in the community and conducting interviews with key figures. The findings show that the use of E-B significantly contributes to the formation of morality in the community, especially for children in rural areas. The use of E-B also plays a crucial role in shaping children's behavior, particularly in fostering respect, responsibility, and social harmony. This research provides in-depth insights into the role of language in children's moral development, particularly within the context of specific cultures. The study reveals how parents use language to transmit moral values and how language preferences are influenced by existing cultures. Additionally, this research enriches the study of language and socialization by showing that language functions not only as a communication tool but also as a means to shape children's attitudes and moral behavior

Abstract

In the digital era, commodity advertisements on social media use persuasive language to create associations within user communities. This research examines the role of linguistics on influencing community associations on social media through commodity advertisements, using a socio-semiotic study approach. By employing socio-semiotic linguistic theory, the study analyzes how word choices, symbols, and connotations used in advertisements can shape social perceptions and community identities. This research was qualitative in nature. The data in this study consists of words, phrases, and symbols, while the data sources were commodity advertisements on social media. The method used to collect the data is content analysis. The researcher listens to the words, symbols, and the connotative meanings embedded in the advertisements. The data was analyzed using a socio-semiotic approach, focusing on the linguistic and symbolic elements within the advertisements. The study finds that carefully crafted language in commodity advertisements significantly influences consumer perceptions, strengthens social bonds, and shapes collective identities. Moreover, the findings from this research suggest that the choice of words or phrases in advertisements for each commodity must create a positive impression in the public's consciousness. Thus, beyond simply informing, the language used should also touch the emotional aspect of the audience, prompting them to purchase the product to fulfill their needs. This study contributes to the understanding of how language influences consumer behavior and provides practical implications for marketers in creating more persuasive advertisements
