Abstract

This study analyzes perlocutionary speech acts in digital communication on social media, especially YouTube, from a pragmatics perspective. In the modern era, YouTube serves as a dynamic platform where users engage in discussions related to political, social, and cultural issues. The focus of this research is on the comments on Rocky Gerung's YouTube content entitled Prabowo signals to keep Jokowi's Ministers in his cabinet. A tactic to please Jokowi temporarily, which often triggers interesting interactions in terms of support and criticism of the content. This research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods to categorize and analyze perlocutionary speech acts, namely how utterances affect the audience or encourage certain responses. Data were collected from several comments taken randomly from related videos, paying attention to how the utterances in the comments shape interactions and influence the views and emotional reactions or behavior of the audience. The results show that perlocutionary speech acts often appear in the form of expressions of support, criticism, and other emotional expressions. Comments such as “Disband Mulyono's Cabinet, arrest, prosecute, then make a new cabinet,” reflect strong emotional reactions and a desire for social change. In addition, comments supporting or rejecting Rocky Gerung's views show that these digital platforms play an important role in shaping public opinion. This research shows that communication on social media, particularly YouTube, is not only a tool for exchanging information, but also a tool that can influence social interaction and build public opinion. The findings provide deep insights into the dynamics of speech acts in digital communication and their relevance in understanding the changing ways of communicating in the modern era.

Abstract

The cartoon Dora the Explorer is a work that combines bilingual elements, where Indonesian, English, and French are used simultaneously to support children's language learning. This study aims to examine the influence of cartoons on linguistic growth in children aged 2-6 years using a psycholinguistic approach. Psycholinguistics was used to study the development of children's linguistic growth after watching the cartoon Dora the Explorer, with a focus on the processes of language comprehension and production that occur within them. Cartoons often feature engaging visual elements and simple dialogue, making them an effective medium for introducing language to children. Through an analysis of the interaction between film content and children's cognitive development, the study explores how elements such as characters, stories, and phrase repetition can enhance speaking, listening, and linguistic understanding skills. Using observational methods and interviews, data were collected from children who regularly watch cartoons and their caregivers. The study indicates that Dora the Explorer encompasses various aspects of linguistic growth and social interaction. Additionally, results show that children exposed to cartoons acquire new vocabulary significantly faster and demonstrate improved communication abilities. These findings highlight the importance of selecting appropriate media to support early language learning processes and provide recommendations for parents and educators to utilize cartoons as effective learning tools.

Abstract

While previous studies on Indonesian literature have explored gender themes, limited attention has been given to how Balinese cultural constructs influence gender representation in novels. This study examines Oka Rusmini's novel Tarian Bumi through feminist and masculinity perspectives to address this gap. The data in this study consists of sentences, characters, symbols, gender roles, and cultural aspects, which are taken from the novel Tarian Bumi. The method used is the free listening method with conversational involvement, where the researcher listens to sentences that contain elements of character, symbol, gender roles, and cultural aspects that influence gender construction in Balinese society through listening and note-taking techniques. The researcher also collects supporting data through related literature studies. Once the data is collected, the analysis process is carried out through data reduction, classification, verification, tabulation, and interpretation, and ultimately produces conclusions. The findings indicate that Tarian Bumi presents a diverse and complex representation of gender, where gender roles are not always confined to the stereotypical roles commonly found in Balinese society. The novel critiques the patriarchal gender constructs within Balinese culture and provides space for women to express their desires and ambitions, which sometimes conflict with existing social expectations. Furthermore, it depicts contradictory forms of masculinity, where male characters do not always meet the expected standards of masculinity in Balinese society. In conclusion, Tarian Bumi offers a complex gender representation and provides a broader understanding of gender dynamics within Balinese society. This study contributes to the discourse on gender construction in Indonesian literature and encourages the further development of gender studies in the field of literature.

Abstract

This research investigates the semiotic dimensions of the Manggarai poem Tundu Tenang Curup using Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotic theory, focusing on icons, symbols, and indices to explore the interplay between signifiers and the signified. Employing a descriptive qualitative method through document analysis, the study reveals that the poem encapsulates cultural values such as communal harmony, resilience, and protection from malevolent influences, deeply rooted in traditional ceremonies like Cear Cumpe and Wuat Wa’i. These findings highlight the poem’s role in embodying and transmitting Manggarai's cultural heritage. Moreover, translations into Indonesian and English broaden the poem’s accessibility and illuminate its literary and cultural significance. This research underscores the critical role of semiotic analysis in understanding indigenous literature and advocates for the preservation of Manggarai cultural traditions.

Abstract

The relocation of Indonesia's capital city from Jakarta to East Kalimantan has been studied by the government for many years. The move aims to accelerate economic equality, reduce the gap between Java and other regions, and support more inclusive economic growth. This research aims to examine the inclusion strategies used to see how the media presents various social actors in the news, as well as how they influence the narratives formed. This study uses a qualitative research approach in the form of a critical discourse analysis method with Theo Van Leeuwen's model, in order to identify how the media tries to create inclusive news and how media discourse can influence public perception of the issue. This research is considered significant because it is a novelty that provides a deeper understanding of how major media in Indonesia deal with major and controversial issues, as well as how they manage news coverage to ensure diversity of voices and balanced information in the digital realm. The results of the analysis show that there are 34 data from 25 news articles that use six inclusion strategies consisting of objectivation (8 data), nomination (6 data), determination (3 data), identification (3 data), individualization (10 data) and association (4 data). And there are strategies that are not found, namely differentiation, indifference, abstraction, categorization, identification, assimilation, and dissociation

Abstract

Every commodity traded in the economy has a signifier (symbol or name) that implies a certain meaning. This signifier functions as a communication element between producers and consumers, creating a reciprocal relationship. This study aims to examine the associative meaning of consumer perceptions of product names from a social semantics perspective. The main focus of this research is to identify how the names and signifiers of products can influence consumer perceptions and associations, as well as how social and cultural meanings shape their understanding of a brand or product. This research uses a qualitative approach with data consisting of names and signifiers on commercial commodities. Data sources are taken from products available at Indomaret Wonosari Bondowoso. Data collection is done using the unstructured observation with the researcher observing various commodities at Indomaret Wonosari Bondowoso through note-taking and documentation. Additionally, interviews were conducted with consumers from diverse backgrounds to explore their perceptions further. After data collection, analysis was carried out through classification, verification, tabulation, interpretation, and drawing conclusions based on their categories. The research findings reveal that product names not only serve as markers of identity but also create strong emotional and social associations, such as trust. This, in turn, influences consumer preferences and purchasing decisions. Names that contain cultural elements, symbols, or specific values tend to evoke positive responses and strengthen social attachment with consumers. This study contributes to understanding the importance of brand names in building social relationships between consumers and products, as well as how naming strategies can be utilized in marketing to enhance consumer attraction and loyalty

Abstract

Metaphors have played an important role in providing emotions in song lyrics, but the use of metaphors as a means of self-actualization of emotional expression in popular music is still small. The research “The Use of Metaphor as an Expression of Emotion in Nadin Amizah's Song Lyrics ‘Ah’” makes a unique contribution in highlighting the role of metaphor in building the emotional dimension of Indonesian popular music that has not received much attention in local studies. Most previous studies only focus on metaphors in poetry or prose and pay less attention to popular music genres. This research fills the void by analyzing how metaphors are used to express complex emotions, such as sadness and intimacy, in the song “Ah”, thus providing new insights into the interrelationship between language, music and emotional expression. This study aims to analyze the use of metaphors in the lyrics of the song “Ah” by Nadin Amizah as a means of emotional expression. The metaphors used are classified into three types, namely simple, implicit, and creative metaphors. Simple metaphors are language styles that are composed with straightforward sentence structures and vocabulary so that the meaning can be immediately understood without requiring in-depth interpretation, implicit metaphors are language styles that convey meaning indirectly through symbolism, connotation, or allusion, and creative metaphors are language styles that are innovative and not bound to certain patterns. It emphasizes creativity and originality in conveying ideas or messages. The analysis shows that the lyrics of this song express various emotions, such as happiness, gratitude, hope, and struggle. Simple metaphors are used to convey direct meaning, while implicit metaphors depict hidden meaning. Creative metaphors present unique and original imaginative expressions, reflecting the emotional journey from hardship to happiness. This research supports the theory that metaphors in Indonesian popular music play an important role in strengthening the relationship between songwriters and listeners and serve not only as an aesthetic element but also as an effective tool to create emotional resonance in listeners. In addition, these findings expand the understanding of how metaphors can be a means to communicate positive emotions in a musical context. It is hoped that this research can serve as a reference in the study of music language and literature, as well as encourage further exploration of the influence of metaphors in various genres of music on the emotional experience of listeners

Abstract

The transition to the digital age presents challenges and opportunities for cultural heritage preservation. This research analyzes the role of technology in preserving Javanese cultural heritage through an in-depth study of the video of the song “Saleho” popularized by Denny Caknan and Abah Lala on the YouTube platform. The research uses a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected from visual observation, lyric analysis, and field notes, focusing on the coding and interpretation of visual and textual meanings, through videos uploaded on the two singers’ official YouTube channels. The analysis used semiotic theory, to identify the denotative and connotative meanings of Javanese cultural values contained in the songs and visualizations presented. The results show that Denny Caknan and Abah Lala have successfully utilized digital platforms to introduce the song “Saleho” to a wider audience, including the younger generation. The use of traditional Javanese costumes and lyrics that are rich in meaning are effective strategies in popularizing the song. However, this study also found modern adaptations in the song’s presentation aimed at attracting listeners, indicating the potential influence of cultural representations on young audience perceptions and cross-cultural adaptation. Implications include the development of a digital cultural heritage preservation methodology and policy recommendations for the creative industries.  Digital technology, especially the YouTube platform, has an important role in the preservation of Javanese songs. Through the case analysis of the song “Saleho”, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of how traditional music can be adapted into a digital format without losing its cultural essence.

Abstract

This study examines the use of expressive illocutionary acts in the Ken Dedes Webtoon, focusing on their role in portraying emotions, attitudes, and social relationships between characters. Using Yule's (1996) speech act theory and a qualitative descriptive approach, the study analyzes five types of expressive acts—gratitude, plea for mercy, anger, surprise, and sarcasm—through the verbal and visual expressions in dialogues. The results reveal that expressions of gratitude reflect respect and politeness norms, contributing to harmonious social relationships. Pleas for mercy highlight hierarchical relationships, illustrating fear and humility as mechanisms to seek forgiveness. Anger expressions emphasize dissatisfaction and interpersonal conflict, while surprise adds dramatic tension by depicting characters’ internal struggles in unexpected situations. Lastly, sarcasm conveys disappointment and critiques through subtle rhetoric, underscoring power dynamics and cultural expectations in hierarchical societies.Overall, the expressive illocutionary acts in Ken Dedes enhance the story's dramatic elements while reflecting Javanese cultural values, such as hierarchy, politeness, and social responsibility. This study contributes to digital pragmatics by demonstrating how Webtoons serve as modern platforms for representing and reinterpreting cultural heritage, making it relevant for the digital generation.

Abstract

Translating interrogative sentences is crucial to preserving the original dialogue's meaning and nuance, as well as conveying emotions such as curiosity or affirmation to the audience. This study aims to analyze the ideology, methods, and translation techniques used and the acceptability of the translated texts of interrogative sentences in Ernest et Célestine. Research on interrogative sentences is still limited, especially in animated films like Ernest et Célestine. Most of the previous studies discuss translation broadly without focusing on interrogative sentences. Using the descriptive qualitative method, this research analyzes and descriptively present the ideology, methods, and techniques used in translating interrogative sentences. In this study, the researcher will classify interrogative sentences based on Anne Dagnac's theory (2024), then analyze the translation ideology based on Venuti's theory and Newmark's translation method (1988) in Siregar (2017), and Molina and Albir's translation technique (2002) in Emzir (2015). The study identifies four translation technique combinations: single, duplet, triplet, and quartet. Among the 18 analyzed samples, domestication was the translation ideology used. The most frequently used translation methods were communicative translation (16 cases), followed by free translation (1 case) and literal translation (1 case). Eight translation techniques were identified, including reduction, common equivalence, adaptation, modulation, amplification, transposition, borrowing, and literal translation. The triplet technique was the most common, followed by quartet, duplet, and single techniques. The translation of interrogative sentences in Ernest et Célestine prioritizes domestication to improve acceptability in the local cultural context, achieved through a combination of translation methods and techniques
