Abstract

This study aims to examine the application of the functional approach in translating children's short stories from English to Indonesian, focusing on the translation of The Big Guest by Shankar into Tamu Besar. The functional approach emphasizes preserving the communicative purpose and cultural relevance of the original text while adapting it to the target audience, young readers in Indonesia. This process involves key elements such as simplifying language, cultural domestication, and emotional adaptation to make the story more accessible and relevant to Indonesian readers. The approach prioritizes balancing fidelity to the original text with necessary cultural modifications to ensure that the story’s message reaches the audience in the most effective way. The results show that applying the functional approach in this translation bridges the cultural gap between the source world and the target audience, ensuring readability for young readers. This study also demonstrates how translated children's literature can serve as a bridge to foster understanding and empathy for other cultures. The functional approach proves crucial in making children's literature more engaging, relevant, and meaningful across cultures.

This type of research is a development research using the 4-D development model developed by Thiagarajan which consists of (four) stages that include defining, designing, developing, and disseminating. However, in this study, this development model was modified according to needs. The model developed in this study became 3 (three) stages by limiting it to the development stage. The data collection technique was carried out by distributing validation questionnaire sheets compiled in the creation of Student Worksheets (LKS) based on problem solving to obtain an assessment from the validator, which aims to test the feasibility by media experts and material experts. The results of the LKS developed are based on the assessment of material experts obtaining a score of 3.25 with very valid criteria and the results of the media expert assessment obtained a score of 3.35 with very valid criteria.

Abstract

Language is closely related to the communication process, both spoken and written verbal communication. Its application is symbolic, so it needs to be interpreted carefully based on several considerations, including the communication context, the background of the message recipient, the form of communication, the type of communication, and language attitudes. Language does not only reflect social status, but can be used as a symbol that shows and maintains power, acceptance and recognition of the authority given by society to stakeholders who have been given power. Legitimacy is formed through a community that has shared desires and goals in the form of power with the main source of legitimacy being tradition, charisma and rational instruments. This is the impetus for research on exfoliating the language of power from a verbal communication perspective. The problem raised in this research is the form of symbols for exfoliating the language of power in the oral and written communication paradigm, as well as the function and meaning of the language of power in the verbal communication paradigm. This type of qualitative research is descriptive with a literature study and field study approach according to the social reality of society. It is hoped that this research can raise people's critical awareness of the language of power and develop humanist verbal communication, namely verbal communication that realizes equal human dignity. Public awareness of evolutionary verbal communication can break the chain of verbal violence that occurs in society.
