Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: Patients recovering from general anesthesia with an endotracheal tube are at risk of airway patency impairment due to decreased pharyngeal muscle tone, residual anesthetic effects, and incomplete recovery of airway protective reflexes. Simple interventions such as the head tilt-chin lift maneuver with a ramped position can help maintain airway patency Methods: This quantitative quasi-experimental study used a two-group pretest-posttest design with 48 respondents divided into intervention and control groups. Data were collected via observation sheets and analyzed using the Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney U tests. Results: The result of Wilcoxon Signed Ranked Test in the intervention group showed p = 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant effect on airway patency. The control group showed p = 0.083 (p > 0.05), indicating no significant effect. The Mann-Whitney U Test showed p = 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion: The head tilt-chin lift maneuver with a ramped position is effective in improving airway patency in post-general anesthesia patients with an endotracheal tube at RSUD Wates.

Abstract

Background: Endotracheal tube (ETT) insertion is an invasive procedure commonly performed in patients receiving mechanical ventilation in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Improper ETT placement depth may lead to various complications, including unplanned extubation, airway irritation, mucosal injury, and increased pain. Pain in critically ill patients is often difficult to assess due to communication limitations caused by mechanical ventilation and sedation. Therefore, an objective assessment instrument is required, one of which is the Critical Care Pain Observation Tool (CPOT). Methods: This study employed a quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach. The study sample consisted of 55 mechanically ventilated patients selected using an accidental sampling technique. Data were collected using the Critical Care Pain Observation Tool (CPOT) assessment form and analyzed using the Spearman Rank test. Results: The findings showed that most patients had an optimal endotracheal tube placement depth, while the majority experienced moderate pain levels. Statistical analysis revealed a significant relationship between the depth of endotracheal tube placement and pain (p = 0.001), with a moderate correlation strength (r = 0.450). Conclusion: There is a significant correlation between the depth of endotracheal tube placement and pain in mechanically ventilated patients in the ICU of PKU Muhammadiyah Gamping Hospital.

Abstract

Background: Final-year students in health sciences education face complex academic demands, including the completion of final projects, clinical practice, Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs), and competency examinations. These responsibilities often contribute to academic stress, particularly among Anesthesiology Nursing students who carry substantial clinical responsibilities and are directly involved in anesthesia procedures in operating rooms. If not properly managed, academic stress may develop into burnout, a condition characterized by emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced academic effectiveness resulting from chronic stress. Methods: This study employed a descriptive correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 60 respondents were selected using stratified random sampling. Data were analyzed using the Spearman rank correlation test. Results: The findings revealed that the majority of final-year Anesthesiology Nursing students experienced a moderate level of academic stress (51 students; 85%), while 6 students (10%) experienced high academic stress. Regarding burnout, most respondents were categorized as having moderate burnout (22 students; 36.7%), followed by low burnout (19 students; 31.7%), very low burnout (18 students; 30.0%), and high burnout (1 student; 1.7%). Statistical analysis showed a significant positive correlation between academic stress and burnout (p = 0.000), with a moderate correlation coefficient (r = 0.484). Conclusion: There is a significant positive relationship between academic stress levels and burnout among final-year anesthesiology students. The strength of the relationship was moderate, indicating that higher levels of academic stress were associated with higher levels of burnout.
