Abstract

Metaphors in written discourse, such as letters using bahasa Indonesia, can be derived from the metaphorical expressions used by writers to editors, showing conceptualization based on what they experience, feel, and think in their lives. This paper aims to find out the universality of the concepts shown by the metaphors and the users employing them. Using nonparticipant observation with a note-taking technique, the data are collected and selected purposively. Through distributional, referential, reflective introspective, and abductive inferential methods, the data are analyzed. The results indicate that metaphors can be grouped into universal, specific, and public types based on the universality and specificity of the concepts conveyed, as well as the users employing them. This implies that bahasa Indonesia conveys concepts similar to those of other languages in the world, which is influenced by experiences from different times and places encountered by Indonesians living in an agricultural country.

Abstract

Viewed from their linguistic forms, Asmaul Husna are classified into the mubalaghah group, whose meanings require the addition of “Maha” (the All-/Omni-/the Most), and the non-mubalaghah group, without the word “Maha.” Out of 99 names, only 69 appear in the Qur’an with different frequencies, ranging from 1 to 138 occurrences. The implication of this fact for professional educators is the requirement of pedagogical competence, personality competence, and social competence. Based on five data sources, four variants of translation were identified, and shifts in form and meaning were found. However, according to Islamic theology, all names in Asmaul Husna must be translated using the word “Maha,” which indicates the perfection of divine attributes. Further research should be directed toward the study of Asmaul Husna in the Hadith of the Prophet.

Abstract

Placing self-autonomy of human beings as purely rational subjects represents one extreme, while positioning rational human subjects as entirely dependent on psychological and socio-economic relations represents the other extreme. This study aims to explain how the main character, Minke, in narrative discourse addresses these two extremes. The data in this research were in the form of textual units analyzed using Bühler’s semiotic model. The results of the study show that there are three ways used by subjects to express themselves: (1) the symptomic way, expressed through validity claims of honesty; (2) the signalic way, shown through regulative speech using normative validity of accuracy; and (3) the symbolic way, realized through objective validity claims of truth. The findings imply that the subject’s orientation in performing communicative speech acts is the achievement of self-understanding and rational agreement without violence.

Abstract

This article examines the roles of fantasy and desire in the process of identity construction as experienced by Luh Sekar, one of the characters in Oka Rusmini’s most notable work of fiction, Tarian Bumi. Employing Stuart Hall’s postulate on identity construction in a critical reading of the novel, the study finds that the subject’s identity construction is highly influenced by her fantasy and desire related to caste and gender. Caste not only structures women’s social location through rank and role, but also, as part of the symbolic order, constitutes women themselves.

Abstract

Semiotics is a set of analytical approaches that has been applied in linguistics and anthropology. This article focuses on language and cultural symbols expressed in Pasang ri Kajang and analyzes them based on the grand theory of semantics. This research adopts a qualitative research perspective. Data validity was ensured through data collection methods including interviews, recordings, note-taking, elicitation, and focus group discussions. The results indicate that Pasang ri Kajang contains sacred ancestral messages transmitted through oral tradition. These messages embody forms of local wisdom related to sustainable environmental management. The focus of this research is the local knowledge system concerning the hydraulic cycle, as expressed in various elements of Pasang ri Kajang. The relationships among these elements construct a substantial concept related to the hydraulic cycle within an ecological framework.

Abstract

Foreign language attitude plays a significant role in enhancing one’s motivation to learn a particular foreign language. This study aims to obtain an understanding of Indonesian students’ attitudes toward the Japanese language. The data were collected from 160 students learning Japanese. The Foreign Language Attitude Questionnaire (FLAQ), originally developed by Pierson et al. (1980), was used in this study. In addition, attitude factors identified by Pennington and Yu (1994) based on the results of FLAQ factor analysis were incorporated into the current research. The findings indicate that the majority of students showed positive attitudes toward the Japanese language, with no negative orientation toward the language and its culture. The study also found no significant differences in attitudes toward the Japanese language between male and female students (p > .05). Both male and female students responded positively to Japanese language learning and use.

Abstract

Appreciating Indonesian contemporary paintings created by Agus Suwage must be related to the painter’s background, existence, culture, and the condition of the national environment. Suwage mostly exploits himself as an object that later becomes a medium to express his restlessness through ideas. The self-portrait objects in Suwage’s paintings function as metaphoric icons. However, the portraiture techniques chosen by Suwage in his works do not narrate a personal story about himself.

Abstract

This study aims to describe how the subjects performed the editing steps and to examine whether the collaborative writing method, as part of the academic writing process—specifically the editing stage—can be used by lecturers to teach Bahasa Indonesia at the university level. Unlike previous studies, this research focuses on differences between men’s and women’s preferences in using collaborative writing. Based on data from sixty participants from the Faculty of Economics at Atma Jaya Catholic University Jakarta, this study employed a quasi-experimental design. Data were collected through essay writing tests, questionnaires, and in-depth interviews. The findings show that collaborative writing is perceived as interesting, useful, and not boring. Male students were found to prefer this method more than female students.

Abstract

Communication strategies are systematic techniques used by foreign language learners to express their ideas when they encounter difficulties in communication due to incomplete mastery of B2-level proficiency. The Konversation course is a subject in which students are required to speak freely on particular topics. Moreover, learners are equipped with basic linguistic rules, which leads them to seek ways to make their messages acceptable. The communication strategies most widely used by JSJ UM students are transfer strategies, as they not only translate concepts literally but also use terms and vocabulary from their mother tongue and English when producing German utterances. The factors influencing the use of these communication strategies include students’ insufficient mastery of grammar and vocabulary, which limits their ability to communicate across various domains because they are still at the early stages of learning.
