Abstract

The Time Value of Money (TVM) serves as a core principle in conventional finance, asserting that current money is worth more than future money due to inflation, risk, and investment opportunities. However, Islamic finance debates this concept due to its strong association with interest-based practices, which fall under the prohibition of riba (usury). This study analyzes the concept of TVM in conventional economics, examines the Islamic financial perspective on the value of money over time, compares TVM with the Economic Value of Time (EVT), and evaluates its legitimacy based on Sharia principles and maqashid al-shariah. Using a qualitative-descriptive library research method, this study analyzes various recent scientific literatures. The results indicate that Islamic economics does not reject the value of time absolutely. Instead, it rejects any automated increase in monetary value that arises solely from the passage of time without real economic activity. As an alternative, Islamic economics offers the EVT concept, which treats time as a productive factor to generate economic value through genuine business operations. Islamic finance implements this time value through real transaction-based contracts including murabahah, ijarah, and mudharabah. These applications possess valid Sharia legitimacy as long as they remain free from riba (usury), gharar (uncertainty), and maisir (gambling) while promoting public welfare under maqashid al-shariah. This paradigm shift provides a strategic opportunity for the Islamic financial industry to build a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable economic system.

Abstract

This study examines the concept of patience (ṣabr) in the Qur'an and its corelation with the mental health of human in facing the dynamics of modern life. In the Qur'anic perspective, patience is not merely understood as self-restraint, but also as spiritual strength, steadfastness of heart, and consistency in performing righteous deeds while avoiding wrongdoing. This research employs a qualitative approach using a library research method, analyzing Qur'anic verses related to patience along with interpretations from classical and contemporary exegetes. The findings indicate that patience encompasses interconnected theological, psychological, and social dimensions. Theologically, patience strengthens the relationship between humans and God; psychologically, it fosters emotional stability and resistance to stress; and socially, it promotes harmony and solidarity within the community. Therefore, the internalization of the value of patience significantly contributes to building both individual and collective mental health, particularly in responding to social pressures, economic crises, and rapid cultural changes. The Qur'anic concept of patience remains relevant as an ethical and spiritual foundation for mental health of human.

Abstract

Contemporary Islamic education faces various challenges related to technological developments, globalization, moral crises, and the tendency toward a dichotomy in knowledge. Underthese circumstances, the educational thought of classical scholars has once again gained attention as a source of values and an educational paradigm relevant to the needs of the times. One figure who has made a significant contribution to the field of Islamic education is Ibn Taymiyyah. This study aims to analyze Ibn Taymiyyah’s concept of learning and examine its relevance to contemporary education. The study employs a literature review (library research) method with a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were obtained from the works of Ibn Taymiyyah and various scholarly articles discussing Islamic educational thought. The results of the study indicate that the concept of learning according to Ibn Taymiyyah is built upon the principle of tawhid, the integration of knowledge and action, the proportional development of reason, the cultivation of character, and the importance of experience in acquiring knowledge. These concepts have strong relevance to contemporary educational paradigms, particularly in strengthening character education, holistic learning, student-centered learning, the integration of knowledge, and the comprehensive development of students’ competencies. Ibn Taymiyyah’s thought can serve as a conceptual alternative in addressing the challenges of modern education without neglecting Islamic values.

Abstract

This study aims to examine Ibn Miskawayh’s concept of moral education and its relevance to contemporary Islamic education. The study is motivated by the moral crisis in modern education, reflected in the decline of honesty, responsibility, and social awareness, which highlights the need to strengthen education that balances intellectual, spiritual, and moral dimensions. This research employed a qualitative approach with a library research design. Data were collected from relevant academic literature and analyzed descriptively through content analysis. The findings reveal that, according to Ibn Miskawayh, moral education is the core of education, aiming to shape the human soul toward goodness and happiness. Morality, in his view, can be developed through habituation, supervision, discipline, role modeling, early childhood education, and the strengthening of spiritual values. His thought also emphasizes the balance of reason, anger, and desire as the foundation for forming a virtuous personality. In the context of contemporary Islamic education, Ibn Miskawayh’s ideas remain relevant to character education, the integration of moral values into learning, the development of an Islamic school culture, and the synergy between family and school. This study concludes that Ibn Miskawayh’s thought can serve as a conceptual foundation for developing moral education that is more integrative, contextual, and oriented toward producing individuals who are intellectually capable and morally virtuous.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the concept of moderation in spending (Iqtishād) in the Qur’an as a foundation for consumption moderation and its relevance to the contemporary phenomenon of frugal living. This research employs a qualitative method with a tafsīr taḥlīlī (analytical exegesis) approach to verses related to consumption ethics, such as QS. Al-Furqān: 67, QS. Al-Isrā’: 29, QS. Al-A‘rāf: 31, and QS. Āli ‘Imrān: 180. The findings indicate that the Qur’an constructs a system of consumption ethics based on balance (Iqtishād), positioned between two extremes: excess (isrāf and tabdhīr) and deficiency (bukhl). The concept of Iqtishād is not merely normative but can also be formulated as a framework for consumption moderation encompassing proportionality, responsibility, and sustainability. In the modern context, frugal living can align with Qur’anic values when situated within the framework of Iqtishād, yet it may deviate if it leads to miserliness or disguised forms of excess. This study contributes to the development of contextual Qur’anic exegesis by proposing Iqtishād as an applicable model of Islamic consumption ethics

Abstract

This study examines imperative sentences (amr) in the Qur’an with a focus on their forms, meanings, and the role of context in interpretation. This topic is important because imperative expressions in the Qur’an do not always indicate obligatory commands, but may convey various meanings depending on the context in which they appear. The study aims to analyze the forms of amr in the Qur’an, identify their functions and meanings from the perspective of balāgah, and explain the role of context in determining the meaning of imperative expressions. This research employs a qualitative-descriptive library research method. The data were collected from Qur’anic verses, classical books of balāgah, tafsir literature, uṣūl fiqh references, and relevant scholarly articles. The analysis uses the balāgah approach, particularly the science of ma‘ānī, by considering siyāq al-kalām and contextual indicators (qarīnah) accompanying the verses. The findings reveal that amr in the Qur’an appears in several forms, including fi‘il amr, fi‘il mudhāri‘ accompanied by lām al-amr, isim fi‘il amr, masdar functioning as fi‘il amr, and expressions containing imperative meanings. Furthermore, amr carries various semantic functions such as ibāḥah, takhyīr, tahdīd, ta‘jīz, du‘ā, iltimās, naṣīḥah, ikrām, imtinān, taḥqīr, and takwīn. This study concludes that context plays a crucial role in determining the meaning of imperative expressions in Qur’anic interpretation and contributes to a deeper understanding of Qur’anic rhetoric and interpretation

Abstract

This study examines a comparative interpretation of Qur'an Surah Al-Mā'idah verse 90 in the exegeses of AGH. Daud Ismail and AGH. Abd. Muin Yusuf. The study aims to identify the similarities and differences in the interpretive methods and exegetical approaches employed by the two mufassirs in explaining this verse. This research adopts a qualitative library research method using a comparative (muqāran) approach to Qur'anic exegesis. The findings reveal that AGH. Daud Ismail emphasizes a culturally oriented da'wah approach, employing language that is closely connected to the Bugis community, whereas AGH. Abd. Muin Yusuf presents a more systematic and rational explanation of the verse's content. Despite differences in their interpretive methods and styles, both mufassirs consistently affirm the prohibition of intoxicants (khamr), gambling, idol worship, and divination by arrows (al-azlām). This study demonstrates that local Qur'anic exegesis plays a significant role in bringing the message of the Qur'an closer to society by adapting it to local cultural and social contexts.

Abstract

The development of digital communication technology has transformed the practice of legal communication in Islamic family law, including the pronouncement of divorce (ṭalāq) through electronic media such as WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS, e-mail, and voice note. This phenomenon raises legal issues concerning the interpretation of divorce expressions, the intention of the speaker (qaṣd al-mutakallim), and the evidentiary value of digital communication. This study aims to analyze the application of the theory of dalālah al-alfāẓ to ṣarīḥ and kināyah expressions in digital divorce, examine the role of qaṣd al-mutakallim and digital qarīnah in determining legal consequences, and explore their implications for evidentiary practices in the Indonesian Religious Courts. This research employs normative legal research using a library research approach. Data were collected from classical works of uṣūl al-fiqh, statutory regulations, and recent scholarly publications, and were analyzed through qualitative content analysis. The findings demonstrate that digital media do not alter the legal classification of divorce expressions because legal validity depends primarily on the clarity of linguistic meaning rather than the communication platform. Explicit (ṣarīḥ) expressions directly produce legal consequences, whereas implicit (kināyah) expressions require proof of the speaker's intention supported by authentic digital qarīnah, including chat histories, metadata, voice recordings, screenshots, and digital forensic evidence. The study concludes that the theory of dalālah al-alfāẓ remains methodologically relevant for interpreting digital divorce while providing a systematic framework that integrates classical Islamic legal theory with contemporary digital evidence in Religious Court proceedings.

Abstract

Dalālah is an important concept in ushul fiqh that explains the relationship between wording and meaning as the basis for the process of istinbāṭ al-ahkām. This study aims to examine the concept of dalālah, the forms of indicating meaning according to the Hanafi school of thought, and its relevance in addressing contemporary community issues. This study uses a library research method with a descriptive-analytical approach through a study of ushul fiqh literature and related scientific sources. The results show that dalālah al-nash is divided into four forms, namely ibārat al-nash, isyārat al-nash, dilālat al-nash, and iqtidhā' al-nash, each of which has its own characteristics in understanding the legal content of the Qur'an and hadith. These four methods remain relevant in addressing various contemporary issues, such as sharia economics, digital transactions, health, and personal data protection. Thus, the concept of dalālah shows that Islamic law is dynamic, adaptive, and remains based on the Qur'an and Sunnah.

Abstract

This study will present Hamka’s critique of the practice of venerating graves in the Al-Azhar commentary, and then analyse this critique to examine Hamka’s position as a reformist using Hans Georg Gadamer’s theory of Historically Effected Consciousness. The aim of this study is to describe Hamka’s critique of the practice of venerating sacred graves in Al-Azhar’s exegesis and to analyse his historical influence as a reformist. This study employs a qualitative research method in the form of library research. The results of this study indicate that Hamka’s critique of the practice of venerating sacred graves can be divided into three categories: theological critique, epistemological critique, and sociological critique. Hamka’s criticism of the practice of venerating sacred tombs, when analysed through Hans Georg Gadamer’s theory of Historically Effected Consciousness, reflects Hamka’s.
