Abstract

Abstract

Polysemy refers to the phenomenon in which a single lexical item possesses multiple related meanings depending on its linguistic and contextual use. The term al-ḥikmah (wisdom) in the Qur'an represents one such example, as its meaning varies across different verses and contexts. These semantic variations indicate that al-ḥikmah functions as a polysemous lexical item rather than conveying a single fixed meaning. This study aims to examine the polysemous meanings of al-ḥikmah in the Qur'an through an analysis of classical Arabic dictionaries and Qur'anic exegeses (tafsīr). This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach based on library research. Data were collected from Qur'anic verses containing the term al-ḥikmah and analyzed by comparing lexical definitions with interpretations provided by classical and contemporary exegetes. The findings reveal that the root word ḥakama, from which al-ḥikmah is derived, is associated with the basic meaning of restraining, judging, or preventing error. The study identifies that derivatives of this root occur in approximately 210 Qur'anic verses, while the noun al-ḥikmah itself appears 20 times across 20 verses in 12 chapters (sūrahs). Contextual analysis demonstrates that al-ḥikmah carries several related meanings, including al-mawʿiẓah (admonition), al-sunnah (the Prophetic tradition), al-nubuwwah (prophethood), al-fahm (understanding), al-Qur'an, and ʿulūm al-Qur'an aw tafsīruhu (the sciences or interpretation of the Qur'an). Although scholars generally agree on five of these semantic interpretations, they differ regarding whether al-sunnah should be regarded as one of the meanings of al-ḥikmah. These findings demonstrate the richness of Qur'anic semantics and highlight the importance of contextual interpretation in understanding polysemous lexical items.

Abstract

Al-simāʿ (linguistic attestation) constitutes one of the fundamental principles in the development of Arabic grammatical theory and serves as the primary basis for establishing its rules and methodological framework. Rather than being a simple process of listening, al-simāʿ involves a systematic and rigorous linguistic procedure that begins with the collection of authentic language data and proceeds through classification, categorization, comparison, and inductive analysis before arriving at grammatical principles. Consequently, al-simāʿ represents the essential empirical foundation upon which Arabic grammar is constructed. This study examines the role of al-simāʿ in the formulation of Arabic grammatical theory and its relationship with other methods of grammatical reasoning. Using a qualitative library research approach, the study analyzes classical Arabic grammatical literature to explore how authentic linguistic evidence is employed in establishing grammatical rules. The findings indicate that al-simāʿ extends beyond the mere collection of linguistic evidence. It functions as the basis for subsequent analytical methods, including qiyās (analogy), taʿlīl (causal explanation), taqsīm (classification), istikrāʾ (induction), and other forms of grammatical inference. These methods are utilized either to validate grammatical rules or to explain and evaluate linguistic phenomena. The study also highlights the significant contribution of Sibawayh, whose pioneering work laid the foundation of Arabic grammar through the systematic application of al-simāʿ and rational analysis. His masterpiece, Al-Kitāb, became a landmark in the history of Arabic linguistics and established methodological standards that profoundly influenced the Basran school of grammar and subsequent generations of Arab grammarians.

Abstract

Dictionaries play a fundamental role in language learning by assisting teachers, students, and researchers in understanding the meanings and uses of words and specialized terminology. Among the various types of dictionaries, glossaries of scientific terms are particularly important for novice learners because they facilitate the comprehension of technical vocabulary frequently encountered in academic writing. This study aims to evaluate the Glossary of Scientific Article Writing Terms compiled by Dr. Sah Khaled Nasution by examining its compliance with accepted principles of lexicographic compilation and identifying its potential applications in academic contexts. This research employed a qualitative approach using the documentary research method. Data were collected through document analysis, with the glossary serving as the primary source of data. The analysis focused on the dictionary's structure, content organization, presentation, and conformity with established lexicographic standards. The findings indicate that the glossary generally meets the essential criteria of a well-constructed specialized dictionary. In terms of design, it provides a clear introduction, states its objectives, includes explanatory information, and presents definitions systematically. Regarding content quality, the glossary demonstrates coherence, conciseness, objectivity, and a focused presentation of scientific terminology, making it suitable as a reference for academic writing. Overall, the glossary can be considered a useful and reliable lexicographic resource for students and researchers. However, the study also identifies several limitations, particularly the absence of etymological information and the lack of comprehensive explanations regarding the origins and broader usage of the listed terms. These shortcomings suggest the need for further development to enhance the glossary's value as a comprehensive academic reference.

Abstract

This study aims to develop an Arabic calligraphy textbook based on Khaṭṭ al-Naskh, evaluate its validity, and examine its effectiveness in improving students’ calligraphy skills at Al-Mukhlisin Islamic Boarding School, Batu Bara, North Sumatra. The study was motivated by the limited availability of instructional materials for Arabic calligraphy, which resulted in students’ low proficiency. In practice, teachers relied on scattered learning resources rather than a structured textbook, making the learning process less systematic and limiting students’ opportunities to practice independently outside the classroom. To address this problem, the researcher developed a Khaṭṭ al-Naskh textbook as the primary learning resource. Khaṭṭ al-Naskh was selected because it is one of the most widely used Arabic scripts, recognized for its clarity, readability, and suitability for beginners. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the Borg and Gall model. Data were collected through observation, interviews, questionnaires, tests, and documentation. The developed textbook was evaluated through expert validation, while its effectiveness was measured using a pre-test and post-test design involving female students at the Al-Mukhlisin Islamic Boarding School. The findings indicate that the research successfully produced a textbook for teaching Arabic calligraphy based on Khaṭṭ al-Naskh. Expert validation demonstrated that the textbook was highly feasible for instructional use, achieving a validity score of 89.3%. Furthermore, the effectiveness test revealed a t-value of 7.863, which exceeded the critical t-table value of 2.000 at the 5% significance level. These results confirm that the developed textbook significantly improves students’ Arabic calligraphy skills and can serve as an effective instructional resource for Arabic calligraphy learning in Islamic boarding schools.

Abstract

This study investigates the associative meanings found in Nawal El-Sa'dawi's novel Mautu Maʿālī al-Wazīr with the aim of enriching semantic studies, particularly those related to associative meaning in Arabic literary texts. The research seeks to identify and classify the associative meanings embedded in words and phrases throughout the novel based on Geoffrey Leech's theory of meaning. This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach using library research. The primary source of data was the novel Mautu Maʿālī al-Wazīr, published in 2005, consisting of 72 pages. Data were collected through intensive reading and note-taking techniques, while data analysis followed three stages: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal a total of 43 instances of associative meaning distributed across five categories proposed by Leech. These include stylistic meaning (4 data), affective meaning (11 data), collocative meaning (12 data), connotative meaning (15 data), and reflective meaning (1 datum). Among these categories, connotative meaning appears most frequently, indicating the author's extensive use of figurative and context-dependent expressions to convey deeper social and emotional messages. The results demonstrate that associative meaning plays a significant role in shaping the literary style and semantic richness of the novel, highlighting the importance of semantic analysis in understanding Arabic literary discourse.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the morphological forms and word-formation processes of Arabic terminology related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Employing a qualitative library research approach, the study analyzes Arabic COVID-19 terms documented in the Dictionary of COVID-19 Terms (English–French–Arabic) published by the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO). The findings reveal that Arabic COVID-19 terminology is realized in two major linguistic forms: words and phrases. Word forms include both nouns and verbs, comprising simple roots as well as derived forms. Phrase forms consist of tarkīb iḍāfī (genitive constructions), verbal phrases, nominal phrases, jar wa majrūr constructions, and tarkīb waṣfī (descriptive constructions). Of the 192 terms analyzed, 46 terms (24%) are single-word forms, while 146 terms (76%) are phrase forms, indicating a clear preference for multi-word expressions in the formation of Arabic COVID-19 terminology. The study also identifies three principal mechanisms of term formation. The first is neology through derivation, which includes maṣdar, ism fāʿil, ism mafʿūl, ism ālah, and ṣīghat al-mubālaghah. The second mechanism is Arabicization (taʿrīb) through the adaptation of foreign lexical items, while the third is translation of foreign terminology into Arabic. Among the derived terms, the analysis identifies 25 maṣdar forms (52%), 5 ism fāʿil forms (10%), 2 ism ālah forms (4%), 1 ṣīghat al-mubālaghah form (2%), and 2 ism mafʿūl forms (4%). In addition, 6 terms (13%) are formed through Arabicization and 7 terms (15%) through translation. These findings demonstrate that Arabic terminology related to the COVID-19 pandemic relies predominantly on derivational morphology while also incorporating borrowing and translation to accommodate newly emerging scientific concepts.

Abstract

This study aims to develop, validate, and evaluate the effectiveness of a contrastive analysis–based learning website for improving the Arabic writing (Inshā’) skills of fifth-semester students in the Arabic Language Education Study Program at the State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Bone. The study was motivated by the fact that many students are graduates of non-Islamic boarding schools or institutions with limited exposure to intensive Arabic language practice, making it difficult for them to achieve the expected writing proficiency within the available instructional time. To address this issue, the researcher designed a web-based learning resource that presents Inshā’ materials based on contrastive analysis, enabling students to better understand the differences between Arabic and their first language. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach combined with a True Experimental Design using a non-equivalent control group. Data were collected through interviews, questionnaires, writing tests, and documentation. Qualitative data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, while quantitative data were analyzed using the independent-samples t-test with the assistance of SPSS. The results indicate that the developed learning website possesses clear instructional characteristics based on the Dick and Carey instructional design model. The website is specifically intended for beginner-level learners and enables students to compose simple, coherent, and systematic Arabic essays by constructing well-organized sentences on familiar topics. Expert validation confirmed the feasibility of the website, with validation scores of 95.8% and 85.5%, while small-group and field trials also demonstrated highly satisfactory results. Students’ average achievement improved from a pre-test score of 62.3 to a post-test score of 72.2. Furthermore, the effectiveness test produced a significance value of 0.000, which is lower than the 0.05 significance level, indicating that the learning website significantly enhances students’ Arabic writing skills. These findings suggest that the developed website is both valid and effective and can serve as an alternative or supplementary learning resource for Inshā’ instruction, particularly for learners with similar educational backgrounds and language proficiency levels.
