Abstract

Inadequate maternal nutrition during pregnancy directly triggers chronic malnutrition and stunting, severely impacting fetal development and long-term cognitive growth. This study aims to explore the socioeconomic and cultural barriers to adequate nutritional intake among pregnant women in stunting-prone urban areas and to identify integrated solutions. A convergent parallel mixed-methods design was conducted in Cirebon City, Indonesia. Quantitative data from 42 pregnant women selected via purposive sampling a sample size adequate for thematic saturation in this localized context were collected via questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Concurrently, qualitative insights were gathered through semi-structured in-depth interviews and analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. Economic constraints emerged as the primary barrier, with 64.3% of families living below the regional minimum wage. Cultural traditions, including specific food taboos and early marriage, further compromised dietary quality. While maternal nutritional awareness was moderate (71.4%), the quality of counselling provided by local health workers remained suboptimal and irregular. Maternal malnutrition in stunting-prone urban areas is deeply rooted in structural economic limitations and reinforced by cultural practices. Addressing this requires localized policy interventions that combine economic safety nets with culturally tailored nutritional education from healthcare providers.

Abstract

Anemia remains a major public health problem among adolescent girls in Indonesia. The effectiveness of iron supplementation programs is often constrained by inadequate knowledge and poor adherence to iron tablet consumption. This study analyzed the effects of iron supplementation integrated with nutrition education on knowledge, adherence, and hemoglobin (Hb) levels among adolescent girls. A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design was conducted among 56 adolescent girls from four senior high schools in Maros Regency, Indonesia, using multistage cluster random sampling, with two schools allocated to an intervention group (n = 27, iron supplementation plus nutrition education) and two schools to a control group (n = 29, iron supplementation only). Baseline knowledge scores did not differ significantly between groups (p = 0.115); adherence was not assessed at baseline, as it was a prospective outcome measured throughout the intervention using the DOS method. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon, Mann-Whitney, paired t-test, and ANCOVA, with baseline hemoglobin, dietary intake, nutritional status, and menstrual cycle as covariates. Knowledge increased significantly in the intervention group (p < 0.001), with significant between-group differences in knowledge (p < 0.001) and adherence (92.6% vs. 44.8%; p = 0.002). Mean Hb rose significantly in the intervention group, from 13.12 ± 1.78 to 14.15 ± 1.35 g/dL (p = 0.011). Adjusted Hb remained significantly higher in the intervention than control (13.86 vs. 12.90 g/dL; F = 6.065; p = 0.017). Integrating nutrition education into iron supplementation programs improved knowledge, adherence, and Hb levels, supporting incorporation into school-based anemia prevention efforts.

Abstract

Curcumin, a polyphenolic constituent of turmeric (Curcuma longa), has been investigated as a food-derived nutraceutical with potential anticancer properties, although clinical translation remains limited by poor aqueous solubility, chemical instability, rapid metabolism, and low systemic exposure. This systematic review, conducted in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 statement, evaluated whether native or formulated curcumin, compared with untreated or vehicle controls, exerts antiproliferative and anti-metastatic effects in cancer cell lines, 3D models, or tumor-bearing animal models. Studies on synthetic curcumin analogs, undefined turmeric extracts, and multi-phytochemical combinations were excluded. The protocol was submitted for PROSPERO registration. A systematic search of PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and SpringerLink from January 2016 to 20 June 2026 identified 15 eligible studies: nine investigating native curcumin and six investigating formulated curcumin. Across breast, ovarian, colorectal, thyroid, pancreatic, hepatocellular, and meningioma models, curcumin generally reduced cancer-cell viability, proliferation, migration, invasion, epithelial–mesenchymal transition, and tumor growth, mainly through pathways governing cell survival, signal transduction, and metastatic behavior. Ten studies (67%) were exclusively in vitro, while five (33%) included in vivo or xenograft components. Formulated curcumin studies showed that anticancer performance depended on carrier type: an ionic-liquid system increased aqueous solubility by approximately 8,750-fold and reduced MDA-MB-231 viability by about 60% at 10 µg/mL without comparable toxicity in normal fibroblasts, curcumin nanocapsules showed a lower IC₅₀ than microcapsules in breast cancer cells, and curcumin spanlastics produced stronger anticancer activity than nanocrystals, which instead showed the most rapid dissolution. Overall, curcumin demonstrated promising preclinical bioactivity, but the evidence remained limited by substantial heterogeneity in models, formulations, doses, exposure durations, and outcome measures, which precluded meta-analysis. These findings support curcumin as a biologically active nutraceutical candidate requiring further pharmacokinetic, safety, and in vivo validation before translational application in cancer care.
