Abstract

Inadequate maternal nutrition during pregnancy directly triggers chronic malnutrition and stunting, severely impacting fetal development and long-term cognitive growth. This study aims to explore the socioeconomic and cultural barriers to adequate nutritional intake among pregnant women in stunting-prone urban areas and to identify integrated solutions. A convergent parallel mixed-methods design was conducted in Cirebon City, Indonesia. Quantitative data from 42 pregnant women selected via purposive sampling a sample size adequate for thematic saturation in this localized context were collected via questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Concurrently, qualitative insights were gathered through semi-structured in-depth interviews and analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. Economic constraints emerged as the primary barrier, with 64.3% of families living below the regional minimum wage. Cultural traditions, including specific food taboos and early marriage, further compromised dietary quality. While maternal nutritional awareness was moderate (71.4%), the quality of counselling provided by local health workers remained suboptimal and irregular. Maternal malnutrition in stunting-prone urban areas is deeply rooted in structural economic limitations and reinforced by cultural practices. Addressing this requires localized policy interventions that combine economic safety nets with culturally tailored nutritional education from healthcare providers.

Abstract

Anemia remains a major public health problem among adolescent girls in Indonesia. The effectiveness of iron supplementation programs is often constrained by inadequate knowledge and poor adherence to iron tablet consumption. This study analyzed the effects of iron supplementation integrated with nutrition education on knowledge, adherence, and hemoglobin (Hb) levels among adolescent girls. A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design was conducted among 56 adolescent girls from four senior high schools in Maros Regency, Indonesia, using multistage cluster random sampling, with two schools allocated to an intervention group (n = 27, iron supplementation plus nutrition education) and two schools to a control group (n = 29, iron supplementation only). Baseline knowledge scores did not differ significantly between groups (p = 0.115); adherence was not assessed at baseline, as it was a prospective outcome measured throughout the intervention using the DOS method. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon, Mann-Whitney, paired t-test, and ANCOVA, with baseline hemoglobin, dietary intake, nutritional status, and menstrual cycle as covariates. Knowledge increased significantly in the intervention group (p < 0.001), with significant between-group differences in knowledge (p < 0.001) and adherence (92.6% vs. 44.8%; p = 0.002). Mean Hb rose significantly in the intervention group, from 13.12 ± 1.78 to 14.15 ± 1.35 g/dL (p = 0.011). Adjusted Hb remained significantly higher in the intervention than control (13.86 vs. 12.90 g/dL; F = 6.065; p = 0.017). Integrating nutrition education into iron supplementation programs improved knowledge, adherence, and Hb levels, supporting incorporation into school-based anemia prevention efforts.

Abstract

Curcumin, a polyphenolic constituent of turmeric (Curcuma longa), has been investigated as a food-derived nutraceutical with potential anticancer properties, although clinical translation remains limited by poor aqueous solubility, chemical instability, rapid metabolism, and low systemic exposure. This systematic review, conducted in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 statement, evaluated whether native or formulated curcumin, compared with untreated or vehicle controls, exerts antiproliferative and anti-metastatic effects in cancer cell lines, 3D models, or tumor-bearing animal models. Studies on synthetic curcumin analogs, undefined turmeric extracts, and multi-phytochemical combinations were excluded. The protocol was submitted for PROSPERO registration. A systematic search of PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and SpringerLink from January 2016 to 20 June 2026 identified 15 eligible studies: nine investigating native curcumin and six investigating formulated curcumin. Across breast, ovarian, colorectal, thyroid, pancreatic, hepatocellular, and meningioma models, curcumin generally reduced cancer-cell viability, proliferation, migration, invasion, epithelial–mesenchymal transition, and tumor growth, mainly through pathways governing cell survival, signal transduction, and metastatic behavior. Ten studies (67%) were exclusively in vitro, while five (33%) included in vivo or xenograft components. Formulated curcumin studies showed that anticancer performance depended on carrier type: an ionic-liquid system increased aqueous solubility by approximately 8,750-fold and reduced MDA-MB-231 viability by about 60% at 10 µg/mL without comparable toxicity in normal fibroblasts, curcumin nanocapsules showed a lower IC₅₀ than microcapsules in breast cancer cells, and curcumin spanlastics produced stronger anticancer activity than nanocrystals, which instead showed the most rapid dissolution. Overall, curcumin demonstrated promising preclinical bioactivity, but the evidence remained limited by substantial heterogeneity in models, formulations, doses, exposure durations, and outcome measures, which precluded meta-analysis. These findings support curcumin as a biologically active nutraceutical candidate requiring further pharmacokinetic, safety, and in vivo validation before translational application in cancer care.

Abstract

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DMT2) prevalence is rising among adolescents globally. Unhealthy lifestyle behaviors including low physical activity, poor dietary patterns, negative attitudes, and inadequate family support are primary risk factors for early-onset DMT2. This study examines the relationships between these modifiable lifestyle factors and healthy lifestyle implementation among adolescents in Bandar Lampung, Indonesia. A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted at Puskesmas Sumur Batu and Labuhan Ratu, Bandar Lampung City (2026). A total of 363 adolescents aged 12–14 years were selected using proportional random sampling (Slovin formula, 10% margin of error). Structured and validated questionnaires (Pearson r>0.361; Cronbach's alpha>0.70) measured physical activity, dietary pattern, attitude, and family support. Data were analyzed using univariate, bivariate (Chi-square), and multivariate (logistic regression) analyses. Statistically significant associations were found for all four independent variables with healthy lifestyle implementation: physical activity (OR=1.801, 95% CI: 1.083–2.997; p=0.031), dietary pattern (OR=2.333, 95% CI: 1.417–3.842; p=0.001), attitude (OR=1.927, 95% CI: 1.168–3.178; p=0.014), and family support (OR=1.739, 95% CI: 1.061–2.851; p=0.037). Multivariate logistic regression identified dietary pattern as the strongest determinant (adjusted OR=2.179; 95% CI: 1.338–3.547; p=0.002). Dietary pattern is the dominant factor influencing healthy lifestyle implementation among adolescents. All four lifestyle factors were independently and significantly associated with healthy lifestyle behavior. Evidence-based health promotion strategies, particularly nutrition education and multidisciplinary interventions targeting adolescents and their families, are essential for DMT2 prevention. Study limitations include self-reported data and two-site sampling, which may limit generalizability.

Abstract

The high demand for honey in Indonesia has triggered counterfeiting practices combined with thermal processes, decreasing its quality. While studies on honey adulteration and heating exist, the specific combination using liquid palm sugar remains unexamined. This study aims to analyze the effect of adding liquid palm sugar (0-30% w/w) and heating temperatures (control, 50-90°C) on hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) levels, water content, and color in multiflora honey. The research used a Randomized Block Design (RBD) with two replications. Data were analyzed statistically using ANOVA, followed by DMRT tests at the α = 5% level if significant effects occurred. The results showed that increasing liquid palm sugar concentration and heating temperature significantly (p < 0.05) reduced honey quality. The HMF content rose from 8.77±0.26 mg/kg in pure honey to 54.25±0.15 mg/kg, exceeding the maximum SNI 8664:2018 limit of 40 mg/kg. Higher heating temperatures significantly decreased water content (p<0.05), whereas liquid palm sugar addition increased the initial water content. Furthermore, honey lightness (L*) decreased with higher temperatures and sugar concentrations; the lowest lightness (L* = 44.75±0.54) and a shifted hue value (from 57.15±1.33° to 54.10±2.32°) occurred at 30% concentration and 90°C, producing darker color. In conclusion, adulteration with liquid palm sugar and thermal treatment significantly affect the quality parameters of multiflora honey.

Abstract

Heart disease is one of the leading non-communicable diseases worldwide, with a continuously increasing prevalence and a high mortality rate. Potassium plays an important role in maintaining normal cardiac function. Imbalances in potassium levels may lead to serious complications in patients with heart disease. Although dietary potassium intake is considered an important determinant of potassium homeostasis, evidence regarding the relationship between potassium intake and serum potassium levels among hospitalized patients with heart disease remains limited and inconsistent. This study aimed to determine the association between potassium intake and serum potassium levels among patients with heart disease at Jombang Regency General Hospital. This quantitative study employed a cross-sectional design. The study population consisted of all patients with heart disease hospitalized at Jombang Regency General Hospital between March-June 2026 which represented the available patient population at the study site during the study timeframe. A total sampling technique was used, resulting in 44 respondents. Primary data on potassium intake during the previous month were collected through interviews using a Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ). Secondary data on serum potassium levels were obtained from electronic medical records. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Spearman correlation test with a significance level of 0.05. Most respondents were in the late adulthood age group (46–65 years) (81.8%), male (61.4%), self-employed (36.4%), had a senior high school education (61.4%), had previously received nutrition education (61.4%), and had normal nutritional status (50.0%). The majority of respondents had normal potassium intake (68.2%) and normal serum potassium levels (65.9%). Spearman correlation analysis revealed a significant positive association between potassium intake and serum potassium levels (p < 0.001; r = 0.894). There was a significant association between potassium intake and serum potassium levels among patients with heart disease. However, the findings should be interpreted with caution, as serum potassium levels may also be influenced by clinical factors such as renal function, medication use, and fluid balance.

Abstract

Anemia remains a major nutritional problem among adolescent girls, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Increased nutritional requirements during growth, menstrual blood loss, dietary inadequacy, and poor nutritional behaviors contribute to a higher risk of anemia during adolescence. A comprehensive assessment of nutritional and behavioral characteristics is needed to support effective anemia prevention strategies. This study aimed to compare nutritional and behavioral characteristics according to anemia status among adolescent girls in a junior high school setting in Madiun Regency, Indonesia. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 123 female students aged 12–15 years at SMP Negeri 2 Balerejo, Madiun Regency, Indonesia, in June 2026. Participants were selected using a total sampling approach. Hemoglobin levels were measured using the Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) method, with anemia defined as hemoglobin concentration <12 g/dL. Nutritional status was assessed through anthropometric measurements. Dietary intake was evaluated using a Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ) and 3×24-hour dietary recall. Nutritional knowledge, attitudes, and anemia-prevention practices were assessed using structured questionnaires. Comparative analyses were performed between anemia and non-anemia groups. Among participants, 26 (21.1%) were classified as anemic and 97 (78.9%) had normal hemoglobin status. The anemia group had significantly lower hemoglobin levels than the non-anemia group (10.87±0.83 vs. 13.30±1.05 g/dL; p<0.001). However, no significant differences were found in nutritional status, energy, protein, fat, carbohydrate, vitamin C, iron intake, knowledge, attitudes, or anemia-prevention practices (p>0.05). Anemia remains a nutritional concern among adolescent girls. The findings suggest that anemia status cannot be explained solely by nutrient intake or anthropometric indicators. School-based interventions should integrate anemia screening, dietary diversification, promotion of iron- and vitamin C-rich foods, and nutrition education.

Abstract

Anaemia remains a severe public health problem affecting adolescent girls. Despite government-provided Iron and Folic Acid (IFA) supplementation, adherence remains low due to unpleasant taste and odour. To analyse the impact of blood-boosting tablet (IFA) intervention accompanied by orange fruit on liking levels, consumption adherence, and haemoglobin levels among adolescent girls. This quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group pre-test-post-test design involved 56 adolescent girls from four schools in Maros Regency, Indonesia. Participants were allocated by cluster into an intervention group (n=27) and a control group (n=29), without individual randomization. The intervention group received IFA tablets with 100–150 g of orange fruit once weekly for four weeks, while the control group received IFA tablets alone. Taste and aroma liking were assessed using a 5-point hedonic scale, and adherence was monitored using Directly Observed Supplementation (DOS). Haemoglobin levels were measured at pre-test and post-test. Liking and adherence were analysed using the Mann–Whitney U test, while post-test haemoglobin was analysed using ANCOVA adjusted for covariates. He intervention group had higher mean ranks for taste liking (35.15 vs. 22.31; p=0.001), aroma liking (32.78 vs. 24.52; p=0.044), and adherence (35.06 vs. 22.40; p=0.002) than the control group. After covariate adjustment, study group was associated with post-test Hb (p=0.005; partial η²=0.159). IFA supplementation with orange fruit showed better outcomes in terms of liking, adherence, and haemoglobin levels compared with IFA supplementation alone. However, these findings cannot yet establish a causal relationship due to the non-randomized study design, short intervention duration, and limitations related to cluster-level allocation.

Abstract

The prevalence of overweight and obesity among children and adolescents continues to rise, partly driven by high consumption of foods high in fat, sugar, and salt. The evolution of the digital landscape has shifted food marketing toward social media, algorithm-based advertising, influencer content, and advergames, thereby increasing exposure to such marketing. This narrative review aims to synthesize the evidence on how digital food marketing strategies influence food choices and consumption behaviors among children and adolescents. Literature searches were conducted on the ScienceDirect and SpringerLink databases and limited to english language articles published between 2020 and 2026. Fifteen articles including primary and secondary research studies and reviews met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed using a narrative review approach. The results of the synthesis indicate that children and adolescents are heavily exposed to digital food marketing across various platforms. This marketing is delivered through increasingly personalized AI based techniques, influencer support, and peer-to-peer marketing. Such exposure has consistently been linked to higher brand awareness, strong food cravings, and a stronger preference for foods high in fat, sugar, and salt. This drives demand for unhealthy food products. Digital food marketing can influence children’s and adolescents’ responses to food, including brand awareness, food cravings, preferences, and food intake. Strengthening regulations on digital food marketing, along with digital media literacy and nutrition education, is necessary to create a healthier digital food environment.

Abstract

Childhood stunting and adolescent anaemia remain important nutrition challenges in Indonesia, requiring sustainable food-based approaches using locally available resources. The development of functional foods requires consistent and quality-controlled raw materials to ensure reproducible formulation processes. This study aimed to produce and characterize standardized simplisia from moringa leaf (Moringa oleifera), mung bean (Vigna radiata), and pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata) as preliminary raw materials for functional food development. This experimental descriptive-characterization study represented the first phase of the two-year “Keloreal Berani Sehat” program. Three plant materials obtained from local producers in Central Sulawesi and East Java were processed following national herbal-material preparation procedures. Quality evaluation included yield (rendemen), loss on drying, and descriptive organoleptic characterization. Each material was processed in a single production batch, and data were analyzed descriptively according to established quality criteria. The resulting simplisia showed low moisture content, with loss on drying values of 4.7% for moringa leaf, 4.4% for mung bean, and 5.4% for pumpkin, all below the 10% threshold specified for dried herbal materials. Yield varied according to the characteristics of the source materials, with mung bean showing the highest yield (97.3%), followed by moringa leaf (28.5%) and pumpkin (12.2%). All samples showed acceptable physical characteristics and absence of visible foreign matter. These findings establish a traceable and standardized raw material foundation for subsequent functional food formulation studies, including nutritional composition analysis, bioactive evaluation, processing optimization, and acceptability assessment.
