Abstract

The Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) program plays an important role in the internationalization of higher education in Indonesia, including Islamic universities. However, research on its support for international students’ academic adaptation remains limited. This study aims to investigate the role of BIPA in the internationalization of Islamic universities, focusing on international student admission practices and academic adaptation through a literature review approach. Data were collected from national and international journal articles, academic books, and relevant policy documents related to BIPA, higher education internationalization, and international students’ academic adjustment. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify patterns, research trends, and gaps. The findings reveal three dominant research patterns: studies on BIPA management, curriculum development, and the integration of Islamic values and the cultural adaptation of international students. Nevertheless, the role of BIPA in developing students’ academic language readiness remains underexplored. This study argues for repositioning BIPA as an academic acculturation program that not only facilitates social and cultural adjustment but also strengthens academic language competence, thereby supporting the academic success of international students in Islamic higher education institutions.

Abstract

Early reading skills are among the basic skills that elementary school students must master. Early reading difficulties persist among first-grade students, underscoring the need for effective instructional media to support learning. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of Wordwall interactive learning media in improving early reading skills among first-grade students at SDN Pasirwaru Limbangan. This study uses a quantitative approach with a one-group pretest-posttest pre-experimental design. The population in this study was all 21 first-grade students, who were also used as the research sample. Data were collected through reading comprehension tests before and after the implementation of Wordwall. Data analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test, a nonparametric test, because one of the data sets was not normally distributed. The results showed a difference in reading comprehension between before and after the use of Wordwall. These findings indicate that Wordwall interactive learning media is effective in teaching reading comprehension to first-grade elementary school students.

Abstract

Computational Thinking (CT) has become a crucial competence in 21st-century vocational education, particularly in programming-related fields. However, programming instruction in vocational high schools often emphasizes syntactic correctness rather than higher-order problem-solving processes. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of integrating the HUTS Online Judge (HUSTOJ) system with a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model in improving students’ CT skills and to examine students’ learning behavior patterns through system log data. The study employed a quantitative pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design involving 38 tenth-grade vocational students majoring in Software Engineering. CT skills were measured using Problem-Based programming tests covering decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithmic thinking, while learning behaviors were analyzed using HUSTOJ activity logs. The results indicate a significant improvement in CT skills, with a large effect size and a moderate-to-high normalized gain. Log analysis revealed distinct learning behavior profiles, highlighting the role of iterative refinement and persistence in CT development. These findings suggest that integrating HUSTOJ and PBL provides effective scaffolding for learning and process-oriented assessment, making it a promising instructional model for vocational programming education.

Abstract

Some students have poor abilities to express ideas and to develop creative imagination in poetry writing activities in Indonesian Language and Literature learning. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the effect of implementing the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model on students' creative process in poetry writing. The PjBL model was chosen because it emphasizes active, collaborative, and project-based learning, providing opportunities for students to explore ideas through authentic experiences and to be responsible for the final products of their learning, in the form of literary works. This study used a quasi-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design. The research subjects were 30 grade XII students at MA Fauzaniyyah. The research instruments included a creative process assessment sheet and a poetry assessment rubric that covered aspects of imagination, expression, and poetic diction. The results showed a significant increase in students' creative processes following the implementation of the PjBL model. This increase was seen in the ability to develop ideas, enrich imagination, and express ideas poetically. In addition, students showed higher involvement and enthusiasm during the learning process. The PjBL model can support more meaningful, context-based poetry-writing learning.

Abstract

Understanding the implementation of the international curriculum in the context of Islamic education is especially important, especially in madrasas that integrate the Cambridge curriculum with the Islamic education system. This study aims to analyze the Cambridge curriculum management process in the Muallimin International Class (MIC) program at Madrasah Muallimin Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. The method used in this research was a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through interviews, direct observation, and documentation. Data were obtained from key informants, including the Cambridge curriculum development team, teachers, and MIC program students. The results of the study show that curriculum management in this madrasah is running well, from thorough planning and effective organization to implementation using a student-centered learning approach to transparent evaluation. However, challenges in integrating the Cambridge curriculum with the national curriculum and ISMUBA remain to be addressed. This study is expected to contribute to the development of an international curriculum for Islamic educational institutions, especially madrasah.

Abstract

The low numeracy skills of junior high school students remain a major challenge in Mathematics learning, particularly in plane figures material that requires conceptual understanding, procedural application, and integrated reasoning. This study aims to analyze the numeracy skills of seventh-grade students at SMPN 2 Kasihan using an open essay test. The approach in this study was a descriptive, quantitative design, with 120 students as the main participants. The instrument consisted of seven validated essay questions to measure aspects of mathematical understanding, application, and reasoning. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including maximum, minimum, average, and standard deviation scores, as well as categorization of student achievement. The results showed a very significant variation in ability. Most students were in the low category, and only a few were in the very high category. The highest achievement was in understanding, while application and reasoning were still very low. These findings emphasize the need for innovative, problem-based, context-driven learning, supported by intensive remedial programs and peer tutoring, to comprehensively improve students' mathematical literacy and address the challenges of 21st-century national education.

Abstract

The transformation of 21st-century education demands an approach that integrates knowledge, technology, and real-world contexts to foster critical thinking and collaboration, positioning Phenomenon-Based Learning (PhBL) as an innovative model that links authentic experiences with conceptual understanding. This study aims to map and analyze global developments, thematic directions, and digital integration in PhBL research. The method used is a bibliometric approach to 352 Scopus-indexed publications from 1982 to 2024, with performance and science mapping analysis using VOSviewer software. The results show a significant increase in PhBL publications after 2016, peaking in 2024, indicating the growing relevance of this approach in contextual and technology-based learning. Keyword co-occurrence analysis identified five main clusters that describe the paradigm shift in PhBL from human-centered pedagogy to digitally integrated learning. These findings suggest that PhBL has developed into an interdisciplinary framework that integrates pedagogy and technology while addressing Indonesia’s priority education issues, including climate change, health education, and financial literacy. In conclusion, PhBL is a promising learning innovation for realizing meaningful, adaptive, and sustainable learning in facing the challenges of 21st-century education.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has transformed the educational landscape within families, necessitating parenting adaptations that account for children's characteristics as digital natives. This study aims to analyze the strategies employed by young families to educate children in the digital era and to examine their implications for the development of the elementary education curriculum. This research was conducted in response to the urgent need to mitigate digital risks, such as gadget addiction and reduced social interaction, given the lack of strong integration between home parenting practices and formal school curricula. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method with purposive sampling, in which data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation, and then analyzed thematically. The research findings reveal four dominant strategy patterns: time regulation, content supervision, dialogical communication, and supplementary approaches. Dialogical communication proved to be the most effective in building children's intrinsic awareness, while content supervision supported the educational function of gadgets. These results imply the need to integrate parenting strategies into the elementary school curriculum to create an adaptive educational synergy.
