Abstract

The vocal beauty play a vital role in the master of ceremonies (MC) profession. This study explores and elaborates the vocal exercises of MCs in Javanese weddings. The data were collected by recording the speeches of three leading MCs in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. In this study, the researcher was the key instrument. The data were validated by material experts and ten MCs from Yogyakarta MC Community (Paguyuban Pranatacara Yogyakarta, PPY) in a focus group discussion (FGD). The ethnopoetic analysis was carried out focusing on the beauty of the text and vocal. While the text was described descriptively, the vocal was elaborated using notation. The data analysis steps included transcription, identification, codification, classification, description and interpretation, elaboration, and inference. The findings show that (1) vocal exercises are more important than linguistic and literary, physical, or wear-matching exercises; (2) vocal exercises can be done both physically and mechanically; (3) vocal exercises depend on the wedding ceremony type/style, situation, and the existence of gending (Javanese orchestral composition); (4) there are three main types of vocal exercises: lamba song, candra song, and tembang (sung poerty); (5) lamba can be sung by MC in many different ceremonies, situations, places, laras (scale), pathet (mode), and gending; (6) candra song has to be accompanied by gending, either ladrang or ketawang; (7) tembang can be performed in solo, semi-collaboration, or collaboration; and (9) polyharmony occurs when there is a harmony among MC's tones, gamelan's laras and tones, and waranggana's (female singers) tones.

Abstract

The main aim of this research is to reveal the form and meaning of threatening speech in the Mahabharata novel by Nyoman S. Pendit. This research is worth carrying out considering that there is no research which discusses about the threat speech in ancient Javanese classical epics through a pragmatic perspective. The methodology approach is a mixed methods which refers to combine a qualitative and quantitative research techniques. The data of threatening speech is analysed using Miles and Huberman techniques (1984). The theory used to determine the indicators of threatening speech is based on Fraser's (1998) theory, to analyze the form using Searle's (1979) theory, and to explain the meaning using Lí¶bner's (2013) theory. The results of the data analysis showed that the forms of threatening speech that tended to be used is expressive illocutions. This  illocution aims to express the psychological attitude or feelings of the speaker towards his/her interlocutor. So, the power of speech that reaches the interlocutor is a form of feelings of inferiority and humiliation due to the use of diction that tends to be negative such as the statements of "˜perempuan jahannam', "˜manusia jahannam', "˜lelaki penuh dosa','manusia celaka', "˜najis',  and "˜pengecut'. Finally, the meaning of threatening speech that tends to be found is the meaning of speech. This indicates that the meaning of a threatening speech cannot be understood easily. So,  it is necessary to consider the context of the utterance to understand it.

Abstract

The study aims to explain M. Yanis' worldview in the novels Kapal Terbang Sembilan (1983) and Djampea (1998), written based on his experiences interacting with the Japanese and Dutch colonialists in West Kalimantan. This study used a descriptive method. The data source in this study is the novels Kapal Terbang Sembilan and Djampea by M. Yanis. This data collection was carried out using documentary techniques. Data in the form of quotations in the novel were then studied using Lucien Goldmann's genetic structuralism theory. The results of the study are as follows. First, M. Yanis' worldview in the novels Kapal Terbang Sembilan and Djampea concerns good human character. Second, the worldview contains universal values about the importance of having good character. These good characters include obedience to religious teachings, being helpful, respecting others, obeying social manners and ethics, having a pioneering soul, being friendly and polite, being devoted, and prioritising inter-ethnic friendship. M. Yanis' thoughts describe a worldview about inter-community relations with moral messages based on good character.

Abstract

Illuminations are decorative framing texts that are related to the content of the text. Illuminating Javanese manuscripts contain a variety of interesting symbols and ornaments that need to be revealed its meanings. One of the dominant ornaments in Javanese manuscript illumination is in the form of birds. The data of this study were 150 Javanese manuscripts with illumination from the collection of Sonobudoyo Museum and the Library of Balai Bahasa Yogyakarta. This research was built using qualitative methods with a hermeneutic approach to describe the manifestation of the bird symbol found in the illumination of Javanese texts. The hermeneutic approach is used in the analytical approach because the data used must be understood deeply through the symbols that appear in the illumination. The results of the present research show that: (1) the most common bird species used in illumination are eagles manifested as Garudha yeksa, sawat, and mirong, (2) the majority rationale (91%) of creating illumination of bird motifs is as the representation of the King, and (3) results of symbol interpretation establish a relationship between the symbol and the text. There were ornaments symbolising the King such as snakes, birds, crowns, batik motifs, leaves, houses, palaces, and others. Most ornaments contain meaning corroborating the contents of the manuscripts. For example, the change of power is symbolised by the cakra manggilingan, the HB (Hamengku Buwana) symbol shows the king on throne, and the bird symbolises and represents the king. The ornaments of birds in particular have the functions of didactic, aesthetic, and legitimacy.

Abstract

This study aims to improve the students' vocabulary through quiz-based application. Therefore, the problems that students have are lack of vocabulary skills and distraction from their gadgets. This paper also gives alternative options for teachers who teach 7th grade in junior high school to using quiz-based applications to increase students' interest in vocabulary skills. The method used in this study is Classroom Action Research (CAR) with 29 participants. The instrument used a questionnaire and test to ensure students' vocabulary skills. As mentioned before, students had a lack of understanding of vocabulary and distractions from their gadgets. The effects of quiz-based programs, especially Quizlet, on seventh-grade students' vocabulary knowledge are apparent from both a quantitative and qualitative standpoint. The benefits seen in test results and student participation show how successful it is to include technology-driven tools into language instruction. However, this study has limitations that can be used for next other researchers. It is advised that educational institutions and technology developers continue to work together to guarantee that quiz-based solutions are continuously improved and customized to fit the changing demands of instructors and students

Abstract

This study investigates the role of self-reflection in enhancing empathy among Vietnamese tertiary English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers. Adopting a narrative inquiry approach, the research explores the experiences and perceptions of nine EFL teachers from various career stages in two Vietnamese institutions. The theoretical framework is grounded in the theory of reflective practice and transformative learning theories, offering a comprehensive lens to examine the interplay between reflective practices and empathy development in teaching. Through semi-structured interviews, the study uncovers several key themes: enhanced empathetic understanding through reflective practice, the facilitation of cross-cultural sensitivity, the intersection of self-reflection and empathy in pedagogical evolution, the enhancement of emotional intelligence, and the bridging of cultural and emotional gaps through reflective empathy. These findings suggest that reflective practices are instrumental in developing a deeper sense of empathy, which positively impacts teaching approaches, cultural awareness, and emotional intelligence.

Abstract

The story of Sultan Agung Tani becomes a means of resolving cultural conflicts in Java between inland and coastal subcultures. In Java, the legacy of cultural conflict has never been completely resolved until now due to the impact of the legacy of colonialism that has persisted since the arrival of the VOC in the 17th century. This story was chosen because it depicts the conflict and resolution between two Javanese subethnic groups who have significant differences in culture, values and geographical background. The hermeneutic reading method with a postcolonial approach is used to analyze the story of Sultan Agung Tani which is recorded in audio and video format. The results of this research show that the pattern of conflict resolution between Javanese sub-ethnic groups through stories of Ketoprak performances is able to influence people's cultural mindset. Ketoprak stories that narrate the resolution of Javanese inter-subethnic conflicts, which are staged by Ketoprak groups in coastal areas, especially Pati Regency in Central Java and its surroundings, have a positive social impact on coastal communities who are depicted as inferior by narrative text stories from the interior in babad stories. Through the stories presented, the potential to provide a cultural model of conflict resolution contributes to a conflict resolution formula with dramatic steps provided to become a dish that is enjoyed. This research provides in-depth insight into how the traditional performing art of Ketoprak can act as an important tool in mediating conflict and promoting inter-subethnic reconciliation in Indonesia.
