Abstract

Meat is a high nutritional food that rich of protein, fat, and sugar. Smart label has been applied as a beef freshness detector. Two types of pH indicator have been used i.e bromocresol purple (BCP) and methyl red (MR) as dual indicator freshness. The objective of this research was to determine the beef freshness using smart label at room temperature. The color change of the smart label was examined by imageJ software to determine the freshness degree using the mean RGB value. The beef was examined every 2 hours for pH and total volatile base (TVB-N) analysis during the 24 hours storage at room temperature. The result showed that color indicator will change according to the beef freshness, bromocresol purple turned from yellow to purple (mean RGB 171.465 ± 1.122) and methyl red turned from red to yellow (mean RGB 162.082 ± 1.315). The beef freshness at room temperature decreased as the pH increase from 5.61 to 6.23 along with the color change of smart label. Furthermore, the color would change when 0.022 %N of TVB-N has been reached. Therefore, the beef freshness can be determined by using smart label based on dual indicator of bromocresol purple and methyl red in room temperature. Keywords: beef freshness, smart label, pH, TVB

Abstract

The leaves of kenikir are known to have many benefits, one of which can be used as medicine. Kenikir leaves are reported to have antibacterial activity against the bacteria Salmonella typhi (S.typhi). S. typhi is a bacterium that causes typhoid fever. Typhoid fever is still an endemic disease in Asian countries, especially Indonesia. Typhoid fever became the third largest disease in Indonesia in 2010. The study related to the antibacterial activity of kenikir leaf fraction to S. typhi has never been reported. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct research related to the antibacterial activity of extracts and leaf fractions of kenikir to compare their potential against S. typhi. The study was conducted using the disk diffusion method using 5 series of concentrations namely 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 30%. Tests were carried out on methanol extract, hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol-water fraction. The results showed that highest inhibition zone diameter is 7,75 mm which is reached by methanol extract. The order of the highest inhibiting zone diameter are extract, hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol-water fraction.

Abstract

Chicken meat is one of the commodities consumed by most Indonesian people and has a pH range of 5,5 – 6,0. The smart label has been applied as a chicken meat freshness detector. As dual indicator freshness, two pH indicators have been used, i.e., bromothymol blue (BTB) and methyl red (MR). The objective of this research was to determine chicken meat freshness using a smart label at room temperature. The color change of the smart label was examined by ImageJ software to determine freshness degree using the mean RGB value. The chicken meat was examined every 2 hours for pH and TVB analysis during the 24 hours storage at room temperature. The result showed that color indicator would change according to chicken meat freshness, BTB turned from yellow to blue (mean RGB 210,591 ± 0,376), and MR turned from red to yellow (mean RGB 208,146 ± 0,390). Chicken meat freshness at room temperature decreased as pH increase from 5,68 to 6,11 along with a color change of smart label. Furthermore, the color would change when 0.022 %N of TVB has been reached. Therefore, chicken meat freshness can be determined by using a smart label based on a dual indicator of bromothymol blue and methyl red at room temperature.

Abstract

Diltiazem HCl is a class of benzodiazepine calcium channel blockers used to treat angina pectoris, arrhythmias, and hypertension. Diltiazem HCl improves first-pass metabolism, a short half time of 3-5 hours, and bioavailability of diltiazem for oral administration of about 40%. Mucoadhesive buccal film diltiazem HCl releases the drug to the buccal mucosa, so the first pass metabolism can be avoided because of its absorption through the venous system that flows from the cheek. This study aimed to study HPMC polymers and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) polymers on swelling index, residence time, mucoadhesive strength of mucoadhesive buccal film diltiazem HCl, FTIR, and drug release. The prepared film was evaluated for swelling index, mucoadhesive strength, and mucoadhesive residence time. The optimal amount for HPMC was 35 mg, and PVP was 15 mg. The combination of polymers with this amount can produce a swelling index was 3,00, mucoadhesive strength was 41,87 gF, and mucoadhesive residence time was 330,66. FTIR test indicated that there was no interaction between active function clusters of Diltiazem HCl and other excipients. The release of the optimum formula in the 360th minute was about 97.847%, following in the zero-order release model and Higuchi.
