Abstract

The 9/11 tragedy has brought up negative stereotype to pesantren identified as a radical Islamic educational institution in Indonesia. In April 2022, BNPT (National Counterterrorism Agency) released 198 Islamic boarding schools which affiliated with radicalism. The increasing cases of intolerant acts in Indonesia have been exacerbating the relations among religious communities. This study intends to analyze the roles of two Islamic boarding schools, that are Al-Hikmah and Roudhotut Tholibin, in Indonesia, in producing moderate values of Islam to their students. This study employs a qualitative approach through a case study. Data were collected by observing various activities in the two Islamic boarding schools, FGD, and in-depth interviews with ten informants. The findings showed that Pesantren Al-Hikmah and Pesantren Roudhotut Tholibin taught moderate values of Islam, primarily through the teaching process of the classical book entitled Idhotun  Nasyi'in. It provides students with social aspects of interaction with non-Muslims and the values of differences. In doing so, students are also invited to participate in community activities to exercise the values of nationalism in Islamic boarding schools. This research further indicates that pesantren is not a place where radicalism grows but it has become an Islamic educational institution that can produce moderation and national values.Peristiwa terorisme 9/11 silam telah menyisakan stereotype negatif pada pesantren sebagai lembaga pendidikan Islam yang radikal di Indonesia. Pada April 2022 lalu, BNPT (Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Terorisme) telah merilis 198 pesantren yang terafiliasi dengan radikalisme. Hal ini diperburuk oleh data kasus intoleransi di Indonesia yang meningkat. Penelitian ini bermaksud untuk menganalisis dua pesantren yakni Al Hikmah dan Roudhotut Tholibin di Indonesia dalam peranannya memproduksi nilai-nilai moderat dalam berislam kepada para santri. Penelitian dilakukan dengan pendekatan kualitatif melalui studi kasus. Data dikumpulkan melalui observasi berbagai kegiatan di dua pesantren tersebut, FGD, dan wawancara mendalam terhadap 10 informan santri. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Pesantren Al Hikmah dan Pesanten Roudhotut Tholibin justru mengajarkan nilai-nilai moderat dalam berislam, khususnya melalui pengajaran kitab klasik Idhotun Nasyi’in. Kitab-kitab beserta dengan tafsir yang diajarkan kepada santri sarat dengan  ajaran-ajakan bagaimana berinteraksi secara baik dengan non-muslim dan kelompok yang berbeda. Santri juga diajak berpartisipasi dalam kegiatan di masyarakat sehingga mampu menumbuhkan benih-benih nasionalisme di pesantren. Penelitian ini selanjutnya menajdi indikasi kuat bahwa pesantren bukanlah tempat tumbuhnya radikalisme, namun justru telah menjadi lembaga pendidikan Islam yang mampu memproduksi nilai moderat dan nilai kebangsaan.

Abstract

Nowadays, the interest of the world's Muslim community in the consumption of halal food has increased. As a country with the largest Muslim population in the world, Indonesia has played important roles in halal-food consumption with attractive trends in the making. In this case, the role of halal influencers on social media is absolute significant in which their presences have shed light on the issue and influenced the trends . This research intends to track the strategy and impact of Muslim influencers in fostering cultural aspects of of halal-food consumption in Indonesia, particularly among Generation Z. This study employed a qualitative approach by using netnography through some influencers’ accounts, such as @aishamaharani, @dianwidayanti, and @anca.id. The findings showed that halal-food influencers could lead generation Z through the trend of halalness into the rules and resources in order to form a new Muslim middle class in encouraging the halal ecosystem in Indonesia.Dewasa ini, minat masyarakat Muslim dunia terhadap konsumsi makanan halal telah meningkat. Indonesia, meskipun merupakan negara dengan jumlah penduduk Muslim terbesar di dunia, konsumsi makanan halal telah berkembang menjadi sebuah trend di kalangan Muslim. Hal ini tidak lepas dari pengaruh halal influencer di sosial media. Penelitian ini bermaksud untuk melacak strategi dan dampak influencer Muslim dalam menumbuhkan budaya konsumsi halal di Indonesia, khususnya di kalangan generasi Z. Penelitian dilakukan dengan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif melalui netnografi, menelusuri akun-akun halal influencer, seperti @aishamaharani, @dianwidayanti, dan @anca.id. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa influencer Muslim mampu menggiring generasi Z melalui trend konsumsi halal ke dalam rules dan resource yang mereka harapkan dapat menjadi sarana pembentukan kelas menengah Muslim baru untuk mendorong ekosistem halal di Indonesia.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has had a multidimensional impact on the community, especially the vulnerable, namely smallholder farmers in Indonesia. Currently, the challenges farmers face are not limited to land ownership, seasonality, erosion, price factors, marketing networks, and the quality of agricultural products. However, it is also disturbed to meet basic needs, resulting in decreased welfare. This study aims to uncover and analyze the mechanism of farmer survival and welfare improvement carried out by Tengger Tribe smallholders in the Bromo mountains, Probolinggo Regency. The case study method was used to explain the mechanism of improving the welfare of smallholder farmers. The research informants were determined based on specific considerations and criteria: six farmers based on land area ownership and crop type—data collection with observations, interviews, and field notes. The findings of this study show that there are several survival mechanisms during a pandemic. First, smallholder farmers with narrow land do not always depend on agricultural products but also diversify their jobs such as entrepreneurship, improving social marketing networks, and supporting services for tourism activities in Gunung Bromo. Second, the mechanism for enhancing welfare carried out by smallholder farmers is intensification by increasing production and reducing consumption. Farmers deploy production factors such as labor, capital, intercropping planting methods, and the use of manure. Meanwhile, reducing the consumption of smallholder farmers in the Tengger Tribe limits the most basic types of food goods to reduce shopping in the market to only a few types of essential goods. Through these rational choices,  smallholder farmers in the  Tengger Tribe were able to survive the storm of the  Covid-19 Pandemic.Pandemi Covid-19 memiliki dampak multidimensional bagi masyarakat, khususnya kaum rentan yaitu petani gurem di Indonesia. Saat ini tantangan yang dihadapi petani tidak sebatas pada faktor kepemilikan lahan, musim, erosi, faktor harga, jaringan pemasaran dan kualitas hasil pertanian. Namun, guna memenuhi kebutuhan dasar juga mengalami gangguan, sehingga kesejahteraan yang menurun. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengungkap dan menganalisis mekanisme survival petani dan  peningkatan kesejahteraan yang dilakukan oleh petani gurem Suku Tengger di pegunungan Bromo Kabupaten Probolinggo. Metode studi kasus dipilih untuk menjelaskan mekasime peningkatan kesejahteraan petani gurem. Informan penelitian ditentukan berdasarkan pertimbangan dan kriteria tertentu yaitu enam petani yang didasakan kepemilikan luas lahan dan jenis tanaman. Pengumpulan data dengan observasi, wawancara dan catatan lapangan. Temuan penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat beberapa mekanisme survival di masa pandemi. Pertama, petani gurem dengan lahan sempit tidak selalu menggantungkan pada hasil pertanian, tetapi juga melakukan diversifikasi pekerjaan seperti wirausaha, meningkatkan jaringan sosial pemasaran, serta jasa pendukung kegiatan pariwisata di Gunung Bromo. Kedua, mekanisme peningkatan kesejahteraan yang dilakukan petani gurem adalah intensifikasi dengan cara memperbesar produksi dan mengurangi konsumsi. Petani mengerahkan faktor produksi seperti, tenaga kerja, modal, metode tanam tumpang sari, dan penggunaan pupuk kandang. Sementara itu, cara mengurangi konsumsi petani gurem di Suku Tengger membatasi jenis-jenis barang makanan yang paling pokok, sehingga mampu menekan belanja di pasar sampai pada beberapa jenis barang esensial saja. Melalui pilihan-pilihan rasional ini, petani gurem di Suku Tengger mampu bertahan dari badai Pandemi Covid-19.

Abstract

During the 2020-2021 period in Indonesia, the stricter enforcement of worship practices amid the Covid-19 pandemic resulted in opposition from various Muslim community. Prior research on this phenomenon has solely concentrated on binary notions of opposition, and as such, has not provided a comprehensive explanation of the resistance stance. The objective of this study is to elucidate the shape and manner of resistance from various Muslim groups towards the stricter enforcement of religious practices amid the Covid-19 outbreak. Qualitative methods were employed in this study, which involved collecting data through in-depth interviews and observations conducted at Mataram Mosque in Kota Gede, Yogyakarta. The findings show that resistance by some Muslim communities comes in three forms: passive, active, and reactive resistance. These three forms of opposition represent a manifestation of the citizens' ideological consciousness as they object to government policies that contradict the knowledge and collective experiences they have accumulated thus far.Pada rentang 2020-2021, kebijakan pengetatan pelaksanaan ibadah di masa Covid-19 di Indonesia telah menimbulkan sejumlah resistensi dari beberapa segmen masyarakat muslim. Studi terdahulu yang membahas fenomena ini hanya terfokus pada konsep resistensi yang dikotomis, sehingga belum menjelaskan sikap resistensi secara komprehensif. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan bentuk dan pola resistensi beberapa segmen masyarakat Muslim terhadap kebijakan pengetatan kegiatan ibadah di masa pandemi Covid-19. Penelitian dilakukan melalui metode kualitatif dengan teknik pengumpulan data berupa wawancara mendalam dan observasi di Masjid Mataram Kota Gede, Yogyakarta. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa perlawanan yang dilakukan oleh sebagian masyarakat Muslim tersebut muncul dalam tiga bentuk, yaitu: perlawanan secara pasif, aktif, dan reaktif. Ketiga bentuk resistensi tersebut merupakan wujud kesadaran ideologis warga karena ketidaksetujuan terhadap kebijakan pemerintah yang berseberangan dengan pengetahuan dan pengalaman kolektif yang mereka miliki selama ini.

Abstract

In 2022, the National Counter-Terrorism Agency released data that over the last 10 (ten) years the involvement of women in terrorism activism has increased by 10%. The increase was coupled with an increase in divorce cases among spouses of perpetrators of terrorism. The objective of this study is to elucidate the reasons and mechanisms behind the correlation between the surge in women's involvement in terrorism and the phenomenon of divorce. The data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and tracing of data from the National Counter-Terrorism Agency. The data collected were then analyzed using Anthony Giddens' Structural Theory. According to the findings, multiple factors contributed to the divorce of terrorist couples, such as insufficient financial resources, pressure from peer groups to end the marriage due to differences in supporting the Islamic State, and the realization of no longer wanting to be associated with husbands engaged in terrorist activities. By applying Giddens' framework, these results formed a compelling argument that the wives of terrorists possessed a discursive awareness of the societal context in which they lived, leading them to make the decision to divorce their husbands.Tahun 2022, BNPT merilis data bahwa selama 10 (sepuluh) tahun terakhir pelibatan perempuan dalam aktivisme terorisme telah meningkat 10%. Peningkatan tersebut telah diiringi dengan peningkatan kasus perceraian di kalangan pasangan suami-istri pelaku terror. Penelitian ini bermaksud untuk menjelaskan mengapa dan bagaimana fenomena perceraian tersebut menggejala seiring dengan peningkatan pelibatan perempuan dalam terorisme. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara mendalam, observasi, dan penelusuran data BNPT. Data yang terkumpul selanjutnya dianalisis dengan menggunakan Teori Strukturasi dari Anthony Giddens. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat beberapa factor yang menyebabkan perceraian di kalangan pasangan teroris, diantaranya: faktor ketidakterpenuhinya kebutuhan ekonomi, dorongan peer-group untuk bercerai karena sudah tidak sepemahaman dalam menegakkan Daulah Islamiyah, dan adanya kesadaran untuk tidak lagi terikat dengan suami yang terlibat terorisme. Melalui Strukturasi Giddens, temuan ini kemudian menjadi argumen kuat bahwa istri teroris memiliki kesadaran diskursif akan realitas sosial yang mengelilinginya, dan kemudian mendorongnya untuk memutuskan bercerai dengan suaminya.

Abstract

Interreligious relations become an integral part of the discourse of social parity. The creation of harmony between individuals and groups is very important to review, given that human existence is filled with dynamic aspects, such as culture, situation, and context. This study aims to describe and examine the essence of the existence of Parsahutaon social associations in building social solidarity between religious people in Tarutung City, North Sumatra. A descriptive qualitative methodology was utilized in this research, with literature review serving as the primary data collection technique. The results showed that a prosocial essence was present in the Parsahutaon community. First, it becomes the foundation for realizing compliance in the midst of plurality. Second, the means of implementation in the construction of social solidarity amidst the diversity of faith traditions in the city of Tarutung.Relasi antar umat beragama menjadi bagian yang tidak terpisahkan dari wacana paritas sosial. Terciptanya harmoni antar individu dengan kelompok sangat penting untuk dikaji ulang, mengingat bahwa eksistensi manusia dipenuhi dengan aspek dinamis, seperti: budaya, situasi dan konteks. Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan dan menelisik esensi dari keberadaan asosiasi sosial Parsahutaon dalam membangun solidaritas sosial antar umat beragama di Kota Tarutung, Sumatera Utara. Penelitian dilakukan dengan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif melalui studi pustaka sebagai teknik pengumpulan data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa, komunitas Parsahutaon memuat esensi yang prososial.  Pertama, menjadi basis terwujudnya konformitas di tengah pluralitas. Kedua, sarana sarana aplikatif dalam membangun solidaritas sosial di tengah keberagaman tradisi iman di Kota Tarutung.

Abstract

The indigenous religion of Java has a longer historical existence compared to the currently recognized state religions. Similarly, Javanese Islam has evolved through religious syncretism with Javanese culture. Javanese Islam has served as a means to reconcile the two opposing poles of this entity, as well as a way to attract followers. Aboge Islam in Purbalingga, Central Java is one form of Javanese Islam. The existence of Aboge Islam is facing increasing threats, particularly in the era of globalization. This article will provide an overview of the current reality, obstacles, and threats faced by the Aboge Islamic community, and discuss their future. This research is conducted using the qualitative ethnographic method. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with members of the Aboge Muslim community, as well as observations and document studies. The findings revealed that the Aboge Muslim community has undertaken various adaptation processes as a survival strategy to maintain its existence amidst the challenges posed by globalization. This form of adaptation is the inheritance of community values by passing down their traditional values to the younger generation, which includes 'ngormati leluhur' (the practices of ancestor worship), "melu gawe" (a Javanese term for working together), and "Turki" (Tuturan Kaki, oral transmission of knowledge and advice from parents or elders). Through this process, they hope their community will survive in the future.Religi lokal di Jawa memiliki usia lebih tua dari agama yang sekarang diakui oleh negara. Begitu juga Islam Jawa yang merupakan hasil sinkretisme religi dengan kultur Jawa. Islam Jawa menjadi jalan untuk mendamaikan dua kutub ekstrim entitas ini, sekaligus sebagai ‘jalan’ untuk mendapatkan pengikut. Islam Aboge di Purbalingga Jawa Tengah merupakan salah satu bentuk dari Islam Jawa tersebut. Keberadaan Islam Aboge semakin hari kian terancam terutama di era globalisasi. Tulisan ini akan menguraikan keberadaan komunitas Islam Aboge di masa depan, dengan melihat realitas, hambatan dan ancaman yang terjadi sekarang. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode kualitatif etnografi. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui wawancara mendalam terhadap pemeluk Islam Aboge, observasi, dan studi dokumen. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa untuk menjaga eksistensi komunitasnya di tengah pusaran globalisasi, mereka telah melakukan sejumlah proses adaptasi sebagai pilihan untuk bertahan. Bentuk adaptasi tersebut adalah pewarisan nilai-nilai komunitas melalui pengajaran kepada anak-anak mereka, seperti ngormati leluhur, melu gawe, dan Turki (Tuturan Kaki, nasehat orangtua). Melalui proses ini mereka berharap komunitas mereka akan tetap bertahan di masa depan.

Abstract

Madurese Islam is one of the cultural treasures of Islam in Indonesia. Madurese culture is intimately intertwined with Islam and reflects diverse perspectives on matters of politics, society, culture, and economics. The emergence of new media has resulted in the digitalization of Madurese Islam, exemplified by its presence on the Tretan Universe YouTube channel. The objective of this study is to provide a semiotic analysis of the Madurese Islamic da'wah content portrayed in the satirical comedy show "Dhe'remmah Cong" featured on the Tretan Universe YouTube channel. This research was carried out using a qualitative approach using the ethnography methodology. Data for this study was gathered through a combination of dialogue narratives and netizen comments obtained from two episodes of the "Dhe'remmah Cong" comedy series. The data was strengthened through literature studies and further analyzed using Charles Sanders Pierce's semiotics. The findings indicated that the "Dhe'remmah Cong" comedy series served as a platform for cultural acculturation between Islam and Madurese culture. Thus, in the subsequent phase, the Madurese Islamic identity can be disseminated into a novel cultural sphere familiar to the Indonesian populace via this YouTube channel.Salah satu khasanah budaya lokal yang dimiliki Islam di Indonesia adalah Islam Madura. Nilai budaya Madura sangat dekat dengan Islam dan mengekspresikan berbagai sudut pandang isu politik, sosial, budaya, atau ekonomi. Perkembangan new media saat ini telah membawa Islam Madura ke dalam platform digital, salah satuya melalui channel Youtube Tretan Universe. Penelitian ini bermaksud untuk menjelaskan analisis semiotika dalam konten dakwah Islam Madura yang ditampilkan dalam komedi satir bertajuk 'Dhe’remmah Cong' di channel Youtube Tretan Universe.  Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif melalui metode netnografi. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan penelusuran 2 (dua) seri komedi 'Dhe’remmah Cong' berupa narasi dialog dan komentar netizen. Data diperkuat melalui kajian pustaka dan selanjutnya dianalisis menggunakan semiotika Charles Sanders Pierce. Hasil penelitian mengungkapkan bahwa serial komedi ini menjadi ruang akulturasi budaya dalam Islam dan budaya Madura. Sehingga pada tahap selanjutnya, melalui channel youtube ini, identitas Islam Madura ini dapat menyebar menjadi budaya baru yang dikenal publik Indonesia.

Abstract

Theo-ecology has long been one of the alternative solutions to environmental problems, including in Indonesia. The Rainwater Sholawat program represents an alternative theological movement aimed at utilizing rainwater as a solution to address the scarcity of clean water sources and flood issues in East Java, particularly in Karangwinongan Village. The purpose of this article is to elucidate the theological movement behind the Rainwater Sholawat program implemented by the Air Kita Foundation in Winongan Jombang Village, East Java. This study was conducted using a qualitative research method. Data collection techniques through in-depth interviews, observations, and literature review. The findings revealed that the religious approach surrounding the Rainwater Sholawat method successfully raised awareness among the residents about the advantages of rainwater as a viable source of clean water. The Rainwater Sholawat Program is implemented through the organization of festivals, educational initiatives, and supportive studies.Teo-ecology telah lama menjadi salah satu alternatif pemecahan masalah lingkungan, termasuk di Indonesia. Program Sholawat Air Hujan adalah salah satu diantara alternatif gerakan teo-ekologi yang berupaya memanfaatkan air hujan sebagai solusi atas minimnya sumber air bersih dan persoalan banjir di Jawa Timur, khususnya di Desa Karangwinongan. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan gerakan teo-ekologi pada program Sholawat Air Hujan yang dilakukan oleh Yayasan Air Kita di Desa Winongan Jombang, Jawa Timur. Penelitian dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode kualitatif. Teknik pengumpulan data melalui wawancara mendalam, observasi, dan telaah Pustaka. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pendekataan keagamaan melalui metode Sholawatan Air Hujan mampu menyadarkan warga atas manfaat air hujan sebagai sumber air bersih. Program Sholawatan Air Hujan ini dilakukan melalui penyelenggaraan festival, edukasi dan pendampingan dalam bentuk pengajian.
