Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between fear of missing out (FoMO) and social comparison among college students who use Instagram with a correlational quantitative research type. The research was conducted on a sample of 360 students using cluster random sampling technique. The data collection technique uses a questionnaire with a Likert scale model which is distributed with the help of the Google Form application. Instrument test using validity test and reliability test. Measuring tools used are Pzybylsky’s Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) scale and social comparison scale which refers to Festinger’s theory. To test data analysis using the normality test with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov technique, linearity test, and hypothesis testing with the help of the SPSS application version 26 for Windows. The results of the study used Spearman's rho nonparametric test analysis which showed that Ha was accepted and H0 was rejected. So it can be concluded that there is a positive relationship between fear of missing out with a correlation coefficient of 0.654; p=0.000 (p0.05). That is, the higher the level of fear of missing out, the higher the level of social comparison among students and vice versa. Keywords: fear of missing out, social comparison, instagram

Abstract

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is an emerging concern in the Philippines as its numbers continue to increase, hence, identifying risk factors of AUD is a necessity. Throughout the years, the contributing factor of the familial environment in the form of expressed emotion (EE) was associated with relapse of various psychological disorders including AUD. However, a scarcity of local literature investigating the aforementioned variable is evident. This study was conducted to elucidate the relationship of expressed emotion, congruence, and the risk of having AUD, and the moderating role of congruence among unemployed young adult males. This research utilized a cross-sectional, explanatory research design (n = 52) in which the relationship of the variables was analyzed through partial correlation and moderation analysis. Following data analysis, EE has a weak positive relationship with AUD tendency. It was also ascertained that congruence and EE have a moderate inverse relationship. However, no significant relationship was found between AUD tendency and congruence. Furthermore, it was revealed that congruence does not moderate the strength and degree of the relationship between EE and AUD tendency. Low-risk alcohol consumption must be maintained, and congruence must be sustained to regulate EE at a minimal level. Their families are encouraged to persist in their positive relationships with them, as these would likely boost their self-acceptance and contain the risk of developing AUD. Regulating the drinking habits is recommended as the family’s negative interactions towards the person would be least likely to occur. Abstract

People with a fear of catching the coronavirus experienced unusually high levels of concern, leading to panic, death anxiety, hopelessness, social withdrawal, and various psychological problems. The present study aimed to investigate whether young people in Bangladesh suffer from death anxiety and hopelessness and whether these psychological factors correlate with the enhancement of coronavirus anxiety. Additionally, to assess the extent to which death anxiety and a sense of hopelessness can explain individual differences in coronavirus anxiety. A total of 592 young adults took part in the online survey, in which measures of coronavirus anxiety, death anxiety, and hopelessness were used. This study provides an in-depth understanding of the fear of contracting COVID-19 and coronavirus anxiety in individuals in terms of death anxiety and hopelessness. All three variables showed a significant positive correlation among them. The regression analysis identified psychological variables such as death anxiety and hopelessness as the most significant predictors of coronavirus anxiety in this study, accounting for 58.9% of the variability in coronavirus anxiety. Ultimately, this research is necessary to ensure that individuals, families, and communities are prepared to cope with the mental and physical health effects of a pandemic or a similar scenario in the future.

Abstract

This study investigated how rational-emotive behavior therapy (REBT) helped secondary school physics teachers manage work-related stress. There are 86 secondary school physics teachers participated in this study using a randomised control trial group design as the study population. An appropriately validated and trial-tested job stress questionnaire was used to gather data for the study (α=.84). Prior to receiving a 12-week REBT intervention treatment, the participants underwent a pretest. After the intervention ended, the subjects underwent a posttest and were also given a follow-up test two months later. Data generated for this research was analysed analysis of variance (specifically repeated analysis of variance). The outcome of the research revealed that the work stress of the physics teachers exposed to REBT was reduced significantly more than those of the control group. Implications: The research implication is that the work stress of physics teachers can be better managed using the REBT program. The study contributes to advancing the therapeutic space and concern that REBT treatment can be applied.

Abstract

Communication between parents and children is essential in helping children's development and the psychology of children. Scientific research on this theme has also been conducted with varying results. However, efforts to perform a scoping of these studies remain limited. Therefore, this article aims to examine the literature on the theme of communication patterns between parents and children to generate dynamics comprehensively from the findings of previous studies and serve as inspiration for future studies. This study applied a scoping review method. The search and collection of literature is derived from the Google Scholar page based on the publications of the last ten years (2013-2023). The selected literature was evaluated using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews (PRISMA). Based on these steps, 38 literatures were selected for review. The scoping review resulted in four significant discussions: The communication patterns between parents and children on child development, the child's environment, sexuality, and internal family relationships. Furthermore, communication disclosure and democratic/authoritative communication patterns consistently contribute positively to the relationship between parents and children. The implications of the findings and research opportunities are discussed further.
