Abstract

Active academic engagement in the educational process is instrumental in fostering the potential and self-skills of students, as well as serving as a pathway to acquiring a quality education from academic institutions. Therefore, this study aims to examine role of factorsinfluencing academic engagement with mediators of academic burnout using path analysis through a quantitative design on 249 medical students. In this model test, academic burnout becomes a mediator variable for self-efficacy and social support, while self-esteem is tested directly on academic engagement. The measuring instruments used are UWES-SS, MSPSS, MSLQ, RSE, and MBI-SS which are tested for validity using CFA and Cronbach Alpha reliability. The results showed that academic self-efficacy and social support significantly influence engagement, mediated by burnout, while self-esteem has a direct effect on the variable. These provide further support for existing theories and prior studies, highlighting the significant impact of social support, academic self-efficacy, and self-esteem on academic engagement.

Abstract

The burnout phenomenon is prevalent in the teaching profession, and it significantly impacts teachers’ ability to cater to the unique needs of gifted students. Such burnout led to undesirable consequences for both teachers and students alike. A reliable instrument capable of measuring teachers’ burnout concerning gifted students’ education is necessary. The Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) is a suitable instrument for measuring burnout. It specifically focuses on pure exhaustion rather than considering burnout as a syndrome. However, this instrument has not yet been adapted to the Indonesian language. This study aimed to validate and determine the reliability of the Indonesian adaptation of the CBI. Content Validity Index (CVI) was utilized to assess the instrument’s validity, while Classical Test Theory (CTT) was employed to evaluate the reliability. A total of 76 elementary school teachers with experience in teaching gifted students were included in the research. The results showed that the adaptation of the instrument was valid and effectively measured relevant constructs related to burnout. The instrument exhibited a very high level of reliability, indicating strong dependability. Subsequent discussions should explore suggested adjustments for this adaptation, drawing insights from CTT findings.

Abstract

The need for life’s meaning remains important for most individuals, particularly for Hijrah youth who aspire to embark on a transformative journey. However, these individuals often face a lack of support from their environment during the Hijrah process. In this context, moral identity assumes a significant role as an individual factor, serving as a guiding reference. Therefore, it is necessary to examine how social support and moral identity shape the meaning of life for Hijrah youth. This research aims to investigate the impact of social support and moral identity on the meaning of life among Hijrah youth. The method used in this study is quantitative, and the sampling technique employed is purposive sampling with a sample size of 255 individuals who are young people currently in the process of Hijrah, involved in communities, and Hijrah study groups. The results of this study showed that both social support and moral identity had a significant influence on the meaning of life. The combined contribution of these factors was measured at 16%. Furthermore, young individuals who embarked on the Hijrah journey and had good social support and a well-formed moral identity benefited in the formation of a better meaning of life during their Hijrah, unlike individuals with unstable moral identities. Additionally, it was expected that the environment provided support throughout the Hijrah process as a positive influence.

Abstract

Previous studies have explored the relationship between humility and subjective well-being, but have given limited attention to the correlation between cognitive aspect of humility, known as intellectual humility, and subjective well-being. Understanding the underlying mechanisms that drive this relationship is essential. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between humility, intellectual humility, and subjective well-being, with a focus on whether altruistic attitudes and prosocialness mediated the relationship. An online questionnaire was administered to a total of 231 participants to assess their levels for these variables. The results showed that prosocialness mediated the relationship between humility, intellectual humility, and subjective well-being. However, the hypothesized mediation effect of altruistic attitudes was not supported. In conclusion, the results indicated that high levels of humility and intellectual humility in an individual could increase prosocialness, which in turn, enhanced subjective well-being.

Abstract

Activists are dedicated individuals who endeavor to create a substantial and significant influence on pivotal social issues. Their endeavors are propelled by a multitude of diverse factors, including aspects such as social identity, perceptions of fairness, efficacy, and other relevant considerations. These factors lead them to engage in a process of internalization within the collective group they are part of, shaping their sense of self-worth. However, the motivation to achieve self-worth is not always the predominant focus in existing study. Therefore, this study aimed to explained the context of activists’ self-worth through the framework of the Quest for Significance (QFS) theory, employing a systematic literature review method. The systematic literature review follows the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) protocol, utilizing keywords such as “political activism,” “personal significance,” “fulfilling life activism,” “meaningful activist,” and “activist experience.” The platforms searched include Google Scholar, Springer Nature, Taylor & Francis, and Sage Journal. During the screening stage, journals that met the criteria related to social-political activism and the activation processes of the QFS (significance gain and significance loss) were carefully selected. The study identified key theme concerning the self-worth of activists, such as the role of activism as a coping mechanism, the positive outcomes of activism, the impact of relationships on activist, and challenges inherent in activism.

Abstract

Employee well-being is a crucial aspect for companies, as it enables employees to perform optimally and make their most significant contributions. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of core self-evaluation and career competencies on employee well-being in the new normal era. The sample population consisted of 366 employees in the Greater Jakarta area from several industrial sectors, such as trade, services, education, military, civil service, and telecommunications. The results showed that core self-evaluation and career competencies had a simultaneous effect on employee well-being in the new normal era. The dimension of self-esteem within core self evaluation variable had the highest influence on employee well-being, particularly the psychological well-being dimension. The findings of this study were expected to provide insight to employees and agencies regarding the importance of self-evaluation in maximizing the competencies of employees and achieving prosperity in the workplace, social environment, and daily life.

Abstract

Trust is an important factor for determining the quality of a professional doctor-patient relationship, particularly in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology (Ob-Gyn), where it is essential for enhancing healthcare services for mothers and babies. Among the various factors influencing the level of trust patients have in medical personnel, their socio-demographic identity is considered very important. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the influence of a doctor's social identity, including gender, religion, and race, on the level of trust reported by patients. A quasi-experimental design with a 2 × 2 × 4 within-subject repeated measure approach was utilized to conduct the research. The sample consisted of 171 Javanese Muslim women, who were selected using accidental sampling. The participants were presented with sequences of vignettes containing manipulated doctors’ profiles based on the three observed aspects of social identity (gender, religion, race), alongside a trust scale specifically designed for assessing trust in doctors. The trust scale comprised four dimensions, namely fidelity (loyalty), competence, honesty, and confidentiality. Data collection was then carried out using the trust scale, and subsequent analysis was performed by employing Bayesian repeated measures ANOVA with JAMOVI 1.6.23.0. The results showed that manipulating the social identity of doctors led to variations in the trust level exhibited by the patients, and this was in support of the proposed alternative hypothesis. Specifically, from the main effect analysis, it was found that gender and religion significantly influenced patients’ trust, while race did not. This implied that patients considered gender and religion as important factors when selecting an Ob-Gyn doctor.

Abstract

The observation of the progress made in studying “fear of missing out” is interesting, specifically with a focus on analyzing the possible existence of a strong correlation between the concept and the antecedents widely involved in most of these studies such as neuroticism. This meta-analysis was conducted to measure the correlation between neuroticism and fear of missing out by considering the size of the effect. The process involved using 13,685 participants from 23 eligible studies as samples. The results showed that neuroticism was positively correlated to fear of missing out at a moderate strength as indicated by r = .369 and 95% CI (.29, .44). Similar results were also found for adolescents and emerging adulthood groups (95% CI [.272, .460]) as well as the common group and workers (95% CI [.249, .488]). Moreover, the heterogeneity test showed good significance, the distribution of scores was considered symmetrical except in adolescents and emerging adulthood, and no publication bias was detected. The moderate level of correlation reported showed the possibility of involving neuroticism as an antecedent of fear of missing out. However, the effect could become stronger when it was involved with other external antecedents.

Abstract

The pandemic was a test of the boundaries and challenges to conventional practices in healthcare education systems. During the emergent pandemic situation, several critical decisions were promptly taken, disregarding students' consent. For instance, healthcare students were encouraged to serve as health volunteers. The surge in responsibilities led to an increase in burnout cases among students, a decline in motivation, academic achievement, and an inclination to consider dropping out or discontinuing education. This study aimed to investigate risk and protection factors contributing to burnout in healthcare students, categorizing the elements into intrinsic and extrinsic. The method employed a literature review following the PRISMA guidelines. Four databases, namely ProQuest, PubMed, Google Scholar, and DOAJ were searched in March 2022, leading to 18 articles meeting the criteria out of 3,835 initially identified. The results showed at least thirty factors contributing to burnout risk and protection, with two-thirds falling into intrinsic and the rest in the extrinsic group. The findings suggested that burnout in healthcare students primarily stems from internal factors rather than environmental influences. These results enhance the design of interventions to prevent and address student’s burnout more effectively and efficiently.

Abstract

Grit is the ability of individuals to exhibit commitment, persistence in effort, as well as passion to attain long-term objectives. The research on grit in Indonesia has remained limited to students, and the investigation among teachers was popularized by Baraquia (2020). This aligns with the emergence of performance appraisal systems for teachers in the Philippines to support the continuous development of the teaching profession. Therefore, this research aimed to measure the validation of the Teacher's Grit Scale (TGS) in the Indonesian version. The adaptation process was carried out following the guidelines from the International Test Commission (ITC) using the Confirmating Factor Analysis (CFA) method. CFA is the most reliable analytical method so far in testing the construct validity of a measurement tool in the fields of psychology, education, and social sciences. Data were collected from 301 teachers of children with special needs (CSN) selected by accidental sampling based on CFA test analysis using JASP. The results showed that the model fulfilled the criteria for fit, namely RMSEA .076, CFI .929, TLI .913, RNI .929, GFI .995, and SRMR .049. Therefore, TGS-Indonesia was valid and reliable for measuring grit in CSN teachers, and the discussion and implications were presented in the subsequent research.
