Abstract

Adolescence is a transition phase from childhood to adulthood characterized by many drastic changes that make them vulnerable to internalizing and externalizing problems. However, parents can guide in managing the crisis by establishing warm, meaningful, and open interactions with adolescents. Therefore, this study examines the relationship between parent-adolescent interactions on the likelihood of experiencing internalizing and externalizing problems. This quantitative correlational study involved 180 participants from six Junior High Schools in East Java, selected through simple random sampling. Two instruments used were the Parent-Child Interaction Questionnaire-Revised Child Version (PACHIQ-R CH) and the Strenght and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Simple linear regression analysis indicated a significant effect of parent-adolescent interaction on internalizing and externalizing problems. It is suggested that parent-adolescent interactions contribute to the likelihood of adolescents experiencing internalizing and externalizing problems. Building warm, meaningful, and open interactions with adolescents assume to assist them in understanding the adaptive way of expressing emotions and overcoming the drastic changes during the transitional period.

The Minangnese are an ethnic group in Indonesia that reside in West Sumatra. It has characterized by an emphasis on harmony in all aspects of life. Despite this emphasis, the Minangnese recognize that conflict is a natural occurrence. The study aimed to investigate the effect of religiosity and interpersonal attachment on forgiveness through agreeableness and neuroticism in the Minangnese ethnicity.  Minangnese ethnic participants were selected by considering the following criteria, namely citizens of and living in West Sumatra Province, claimed to be Minangnese people, Muslim, and living in West Sumatra Province for the last 10 years. Using a stratified cluster random sampling method, 205 Minangnese individuals were recruited and administered five questionnaires to assess forgiveness, agreeableness, neuroticism, religiosity, and interpersonal attachment. The results indicated that religiosity had a significant influence on forgiveness in the Minangnese ethnicity, with this influence being mediated by agreeableness and neuroticism. Specifically, religiosity was found to have a positive effect on emotional stability and a negative effect on neuroticism, as well as reducing hostility and anger and decreasing anxiety. These findings suggest that religiosity and agreeableness may be important factors to consider when seeking to understand and promote forgiveness in the Minangnese ethnicity

Abstract

Aggressive behavior is a concerning issue that requires attention because of its negative effects on victims. It can manifest in various forms and can be carried out by anyone, at any time. The reasons and conditions that contribute to this behavior are closely linked to an individual’s level of mindfulness. Previous studies have shown that mindfulness can minimize this aggressive behavior. Therefore, this meta-analysis study aims to examine the effect of mindfulness on aggressive behavior. It involves 17 scientific studies with 6,722 respondents. The entire results showed a negative relationship between mindfulness and aggressive behavior. The study obtained an effect-sized result of -.270 with 95% Cl [-.336, -.205] and I2 of 83.89%. This implies that mindfulness and aggression behavior have a small effect size due to other variables, factors, and mediators. These other variables and moderators need to be included in future studies to describe other factors more related to this behavior. Furthermore, similar studies need to be added to confirm the correlation between mindfulness and aggression behavior.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a negative impact on individuals, such as psychological distress characterized by depression and anxiety. This research aims to determine the risk and protective factors that affect the psychological distress of individuals in Asia. This study used a systematic literature review method based on PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic and Meta-analysis). Articles were searched using specific keywords in the Google Scholar and Science Direct databases based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Search articles using the keywords “psychological distress”, AND “COVID-19”, AND “individual psychological distress”, “COVID-19 Asia” on Google Scholar and ScienceDirect databases based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results of the synthesis of the 14 selected articles showed that there were risk factors and protective factors for psychological distress, which were grouped from sociodemographic factors, stress-related factors, internal factors, and external factors. Socio-demographic factors such as gender, age, marital status/ family status, and living in areas where the COVID-19 virus is spreading. Stress-related factors such as isolation, taking vitamins at home, and using social media to access negative news about the COVID-19 pandemic. Internal factors include congenital diseases and low self-efficacy. External factors include heavy workload, low income, lack of health protocols, less experienced in work, and just completed or graduated the education. The results of this study explain individual psychological distress, especially during a pandemic. Further research can conduct a meta-analysis to determine the effect size of risk and protective factors on psychological distress.

Abstract

Previous research has documented that psychosocial resources and socioeconomic status have significant influences on investment behavior in financial assets. There are currently no studies available about the motivating factors of individual investor participation in the South Pacific Stock Market to the researcher’s knowledge. This study investigates the motivating factors of existing and potential stock market investors in countries with similar socio-cultural backgrounds. Using a purposive sample of potential stock investors in Fiji, the study sample included 162 participants with university education (banking and finance). Two research assistants were involved in collecting data, and 108 questionnaires were received via email and Google forms while the balance 54 were collected physically. The researcher tested how enterprising personality plays a mediating role in relation to the association between individual characteristics and investment behavior in the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) framework. The results revealed that four latent factors (intuition, education and knowledge, sociocultural norms, and enterprising personality) are distinct dimensions of investment inclination together with the maturity factor (age) towards stock investments. The findings will be useful for financial service providers and regulators in designing educational programs to enhance enterprising personality qualities amongst people generally, and inculcate positive attitudes towards stock investments in the young through high school curricula and mass-awareness programs.

Abstract

Active academic engagement in the educational process is instrumental in fostering the potential and self-skills of students, as well as serving as a pathway to acquiring a quality education from academic institutions. Therefore, this study aims to examine role of factorsinfluencing academic engagement with mediators of academic burnout using path analysis through a quantitative design on 249 medical students. In this model test, academic burnout becomes a mediator variable for self-efficacy and social support, while self-esteem is tested directly on academic engagement. The measuring instruments used are UWES-SS, MSPSS, MSLQ, RSE, and MBI-SS which are tested for validity using CFA and Cronbach Alpha reliability. The results showed that academic self-efficacy and social support significantly influence engagement, mediated by burnout, while self-esteem has a direct effect on the variable. These provide further support for existing theories and prior studies, highlighting the significant impact of social support, academic self-efficacy, and self-esteem on academic engagement.

Abstract

The burnout phenomenon is prevalent in the teaching profession, and it significantly impacts teachers’ ability to cater to the unique needs of gifted students. Such burnout led to undesirable consequences for both teachers and students alike. A reliable instrument capable of measuring teachers’ burnout concerning gifted students’ education is necessary. The Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) is a suitable instrument for measuring burnout. It specifically focuses on pure exhaustion rather than considering burnout as a syndrome. However, this instrument has not yet been adapted to the Indonesian language. This study aimed to validate and determine the reliability of the Indonesian adaptation of the CBI. Content Validity Index (CVI) was utilized to assess the instrument’s validity, while Classical Test Theory (CTT) was employed to evaluate the reliability. A total of 76 elementary school teachers with experience in teaching gifted students were included in the research. The results showed that the adaptation of the instrument was valid and effectively measured relevant constructs related to burnout. The instrument exhibited a very high level of reliability, indicating strong dependability. Subsequent discussions should explore suggested adjustments for this adaptation, drawing insights from CTT findings.

Abstract

The need for life’s meaning remains important for most individuals, particularly for Hijrah youth who aspire to embark on a transformative journey. However, these individuals often face a lack of support from their environment during the Hijrah process. In this context, moral identity assumes a significant role as an individual factor, serving as a guiding reference. Therefore, it is necessary to examine how social support and moral identity shape the meaning of life for Hijrah youth. This research aims to investigate the impact of social support and moral identity on the meaning of life among Hijrah youth. The method used in this study is quantitative, and the sampling technique employed is purposive sampling with a sample size of 255 individuals who are young people currently in the process of Hijrah, involved in communities, and Hijrah study groups. The results of this study showed that both social support and moral identity had a significant influence on the meaning of life. The combined contribution of these factors was measured at 16%. Furthermore, young individuals who embarked on the Hijrah journey and had good social support and a well-formed moral identity benefited in the formation of a better meaning of life during their Hijrah, unlike individuals with unstable moral identities. Additionally, it was expected that the environment provided support throughout the Hijrah process as a positive influence.
