Abstract

This research is made as a result of issue of error punctuation usage on narrative writing. Understanding meaning of writing text is depend on the punctuation. It is scrutinized by using correlation research method. The result of the research was elaborated into three categories. They are low, middle, and high. Based on variable of punctuation usage, the low grade defined 21,62% or 8 students, the middle grade defined 65,75% or 21 students, and the high grade defined 21,62% or 8 students. Furthermore, based on narrative writing, the low grade set 24,32% or 9 students, the middle grade set 51,35%, and the high grade set 24,32% or 9 students. Then, the researchers resulted “r hitung” = 0,5956 and “r table” = 0,334 or 0,430. The calculation showed that “r hitung” was bigger than “r table”. It means that there was a significant correlation between punctuation usage and narrative writing among the second-year communication sciences students. Through the finding and looking at middle category grade, it can be summed up that there was significant study between punctuation usage and narrative writing.

Abstract

This study examined the 2019 National Examination language scores of senior high school students in Jakarta and Lampung, Indonesia. National examinations are a cornerstone of Indonesia's education system, vital for assessing student competency and ensuring quality control. However, persistent regional disparities in these exam results are a known challenge. This research aimed to address a gap in the literature by directly comparing these language scores between the urban center of Jakarta and the more rural Lampung. The results revealed a significant performance gap, with Jakarta students consistently scoring higher. Factors such as resource availability, teacher quality, and socioeconomic status are discussed as potential contributors to this disparity. The study highlights the ongoing challenge of achieving educational equity in Indonesia and underscores the urgent need for targeted interventions to bridge these regional differences.

Abstract

This systematic literature review critically examines the role of teacher training in promoting effective English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction in Mali. Analyzing six peer-reviewed articles published between 2021 and 2025, the review synthesizes findings on general EFL instruction, prevalent challenges, the specific impact of teacher training, existing methodologies, and identified research gaps. The review reveals that despite global shifts towards an English as an International Language (EIL) approach and the recognized benefits of mother-tongue-mediated instruction for learning and cultural identity, Malian EFL instruction faces profound systemic and contextual challenges. Key impediments include inadequate teacher training, large class sizes, severe lack of appropriate teaching materials and technological infrastructure, low student proficiency, and motivational issues. Student diagnostic test results demonstrate particular weaknesses in applying and analyzing skills within EFL. Findings underscore that while a majority of Malian EFL teachers attend professional development sessions (e.g., 72% for CBA training ), a substantial proportion (94%) report persistent difficulties in implementing new approaches, often reverting to traditional methods due to a perceived lack of practical training and supportive resources. The critical impact of these challenges is evident in suboptimal student learning outcomes. The review highlights teachers' resourceful self-initiated solutions, such as peer collaboration and utilizing digital platforms like WhatsApp for professional development, yet these are also subject to contextual constraints like connectivity costs and digital literacy. The synthesis concludes that effective EFL instruction in Mali necessitates comprehensive, context-specific, and sustained teacher training programs that transcend theoretical knowledge to address practical classroom realities. Recommendations include strategic investment in tailored resources, infrastructure development to bridge the digital divide, flexible administrative policies, and fostering a collaborative learning environment that empowers teachers to enhance their pedagogical practices and, consequently, improve student English language proficiency.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is a fundamental aspect of English language learning, but many college students experience difficulties in remembering and applying vocabulary effectively. Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) strategies, which encourage independent and reflective learning, offer potential benefits in vocabulary development, but further study is needed in practical contexts. This study aims to analyze students' experiences in learning English vocabulary using SRL strategies and to identify internal and external factors that influence their learning behavior. A qualitative approach with a phenomenological design was used in accordance with the Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research (SRQR) guidelines. Fifteen final-year students from the English language education program at a university in Kebumen were purposively selected based on the results of a 20-item Likert-scale SRL questionnaire. Data were collected through questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. Thematic analysis was conducted based on the six stages proposed by Braun and Clarke and the SRL framework by Zimmerman, which includes the planning, implementation, and self-reflection phases, as well as metacognitive, motivational, and behavioral components. The research findings indicate that students actively apply SRL strategies in vocabulary learning, including goal setting, use of digital media (such as Quizlet, YouTube), reflective journal writing, and adjustment of methods based on evaluation. Students demonstrated high motivation and perseverance, although time management and planning strategies still varied. Questionnaire results reinforced qualitative findings and confirmed student engagement in SRL principles. Overall, SRL strategies play a significant role in supporting independent, strategic, and reflective vocabulary learning in higher education settings.

Abstract

This study investigates how real-life conversations with international tourists enhance the speaking competence of English for Tour Guide students in Banyuwangi. The project was designed to provide authentic language develop both linguistic and intercultural competence. Qualitative descriptive as approach and data were collected through observations and students’ reflective reports. The findings indicate that while students displayed enthusiasm, hospitality, and the ability to initiate interactions, they faced significant challenges in vocabulary, pronunciation, and translating cultural concepts into meaningful English explanations. Literal translations often reduced the symbolic value of rituals such as Gandrung Sewu and Tumpengan, leading to incomplete communication. Psychological barriers, including nervousness and fear of making mistakes, also emerged, although these decreased once interactions began. Non-verbal strategies such as gestures and visual aids supported communication but required stronger verbal elaboration. Overall, the study suggests that authentic exposure provides powerful opportunities for building communicative confidence and resilience, yet students need structured preparation to succeed in unpredictable intercultural encounters. By combining linguistic, intercultural, and psychological readiness, students can perform more effectively as cultural mediators and ambassadors of Banyuwangi in global tourism contexts.

Abstract

Semester Learning Plan (RPS) serves as a crucial guide for educators. However, it is often observed that an RPS may fall short ineffectively guiding educators due to its failure to keep pace with technological advancements. Consequently, educators must engage in innovative practices. This observation underscores the necessity for developing a learning model that is more aligned with technological trends. A learning model is essentially a framework that can be as a standard or reference for educational practices. One particular model that is set to be developed is the learning model for the course Movie Subtitling. This initiative arises from the recognition that the current RPS for this course includes learning activities that lack innovative technological integration and do not introduce new knowledge, as it primarily focuses on analysing translation outcomes. More critically, the existing RPS for Movie Subtitling does not provide students with opportunities to acquire knowledge or practical experience in utilizing Artificial Intelligence-based translation applications. The discussion related to Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become increasingly interesting, particularly within the realm of translation. This interest extends specifically to the subtitling of films. However, research aimed at developing learning models that optimize the use of AI-driven translation applications remains limited. In this context, the findings of this research emerge as particularly significant. Key findings include: 1) An analysis and explanation of the format and content of the pre-development RPS, 2) Insights into the rationale for the necessity of developing the RPS, 3) A detailed explanation of the process involved in developing the newly designed learning model, and 4) An exploration of AI-based translation applications that can be integrated within the developed learning framework.
