Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to analyze the descriptive use of onomatopoeia in SENKA Perfect Whip advertisements. Onomatopoeia comes from Ancient Greek, namely onomatopeiia which means the formation of names or words that sound like their references. The data used is obtained from advertising texts sourced from several social media. The results of the analysis show that the use of onomatopoeia in advertising, especially in the context of beauty, helps consumers. the use of onomatopoeia that reflects softness, beauty, and moisture creates an image of the atmosphere of Japanese culture. Onomatopoeia is used to describe a situation or a person's personal experience of an object, so using onomatopoeia in advertising creates a visual imagination without sound that describes the impression of slippery, smooth and soft. The touch generated in the movement makes consumers feel as if they are feeling it, so in addition to the use of persuasive text, the use of onomatopoeia in advertising helps increase the attractiveness of products, especially in beauty. Keywords: onomatopoeia, diction, advertising, beauty, SENKA Perfect Whip

Abstract

Abstract: This study aimed to analyse English department students' attitudes towards their lecturers' code-switching at Universitas Riau and its perceived impact on learning motivation and English development. Employing a quantitative survey design, data were collected from 73 third-year students using a 30-item questionnaire adapted from AlQaysi (2019), which utilized a 5-point Likert scale. The questionnaire assessed three aspects of attitude: affective, behavioural, and cognitive. Data were analysed using SPSS 25 with descriptive analysis methods. Findings revealed that students generally held positive attitudes towards code-switching, particularly in the affective aspect (mean score 3.768), while exhibiting neutral attitudes in behavioural (mean score 3.341) and cognitive (mean score 3.456) aspects. The overall mean score of 3.521 indicated a positive attitude towards code-switching. This positive perspective, despite neutral scores in behavioural and cognitive areas, highlights the significant influence of students' favourable emotional responses. The study concludes that while code-switching may not directly shape students' learning behaviours or cognitive comprehension, its acceptance and emotional appeal are significant enough to foster an overall positive attitude, emphasizing the importance of emotional connection in English learning settings. Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to analyze the speaking fluency levels of fourth-semester students in the English Language Education Study Program at FKIP Universitas Riau. Speaking fluency is essential for future English educators, as it reflects language proficiency and supports effective teaching processes. This research uses a descriptive quantitative method to assess fluency based on disfluency indicators, such as repetitions, pauses, fillers, and false starts. Data were collected through two-minute speech recordings of each participant, with a random sample of 27 students chosen from three classes. Spectral analysis using Audacity software identified and counted disfluencies, which were then statistically analyzed. Results show that most students achieved fluency at level 3, with high rates of pauses and fillers. Disfluency factors include limited vocabulary, speaking anxiety, and lack of English practice. Recommendations for enhancing fluency include gradually increasing task difficulty, providing more practice time, and offering in-depth learning materials. The study suggests that the program pay special attention to developing teaching materials and methods to support students’ fluency improvement. Keywords: Speaking fluency, disfluency, students, English language learning
