Abstract

The aim of the experiment was to determine the utilization of kayambang (salvinia molesta) leaves meal on protein consumption, protein efficiency ratio, nitrogen retention, and digestibility protein. Experiment used 200 japanese female quails aged 9 weeks with average body weight 114.86 ± 2.69 g (CV 2.34%). The experiment was conducted in battery cages. The study used a completely randomized design with 4 treatments and 5 replications. The treatment diets were T0 (control), T1 (2.5% Salvinia molesta leaves meal), T2 (5% Salvinia molesta leaves meal) and T3 (7.5% Salvinia molesta leaves meal). The dose of a liquid additive was 5 ml/quail. Observation of crude protein digestibility and the energy was carried for 3 days and protein measurements were analysed using Kjeldahl method. The results showed that administration of salvinia molesta leaf meal up to 7.5% level in the diet decreased the quality of the ration so that the protein utilization was also decreased as indicated by the decline of protein consumption, protein efficiency ratio, nitrogen retention, and digestibility protein. Keywords: quail, kayambang (Salvinia molesta), protein efficiency

Abstract

This experiment was carried out in a 7,500 m2 poultry closed house located between the geographical coordinates 7°21ʹ-7°31ʹ south latitude and 110°10ʹ-111°31ʹ    west longitude and an average altitute of 654 m, from July to August 2020. The chickens were placed in 24 pens measuring 1 m2 each at stocking density of 4 chickens m-2. This study aimed at evaluating the effect of three initial weight (chick weight on first day of experiment) and two types of mixed feed on broiler performance. A total 96 day old chicks strain CP 707 derived from the same flock of breeders, was distributed in completely randomized experimental design with 3 (initial weight) by two type of mixed feed five repliated per treatment. The feed was complete feed produced by PT. Charoen Pokphand Indonesia Tbk. Complete feed was given based on the maintenance phase, include BR0 (1-7 days old), BR1 (8-21 days), and BR2 (>21 days). The booster additive was a commercial product. Initial weights were classified as light (37-41 g), medium (42-46 g) and heavy (>47 g), whereas mixed feed (with and without additive booster) were used as daily chicken feed.  Data were analyzed by ANOVA and means were compared by Tukey’s test at 95% confidence level. Initial weight and types of mixed feed have no effect on feed consumption, body weight gain, feed conversion, dan production index.

Abstract

Trans fatty acid such as trans-octadecenoic acid (trans C18:1) in goat milk could be detected using silver-ion thin layer chromatography. Measurement of trans fatty acid content of goat milk derived from 8 Peranakan Etawah (PE) goats. The goats were divided into 2 groups in which group 1 was fed by elephant grass while group 2 was fed by native grass. The study showed that the proportion of trans fatty acid toward total fatty acid in group 1 and group 2 were 1.04% and 2.04% respectively. It was concluded that native grass could increase the proportion of trans fatty acid. Vaccenic acid trans-11 (C18:1) was the main content of trans fatty acid isomer in goat milk.   Key words : Trans fatty acid, Goat milk, PE

Abstract

The study was conducted to evaluate the effect of duration feeding of Spirulina platensis as a prebiotic in ration on the red blood cells of broiler chickens. The material used in this study was 240 day old chick (DOC) with average of initial weight 42.015 ± 0.219 g. The experiment was designed based on Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 4 treatments and 5 replications. The treated treatments were T0 (Feed Basal + 0.04% Zinc Bacitracin), T1 (Basal diet + 1% Spirulina platensis for 7 days administration), T2 (Basal diet + 1% Spirulina platensis for 21 days of administration) and T3 (Feed Basal + 1% Spirulina platensis for 35 days of administration). Measured variables include total erythrocytes, hemoglobin, percentage of hematocrit, and erythrocyte index values (MCV, MCH, MCHC). Data were analyzed by variance test (F test) and if there was a significant difference then continued with Duncan’s multiple range test. The results showed that there was significant differences (P <0.05) between treatments on total erythrocytes, and no significant differences (P> 0.05) between treatments on hemoglobin levels, hematocrit percentage, and erythrocyte index values (MCV, MCH, MCHC). It concluded that the feeding of Spirulina platensis for 35 days in ration can reduce total broiler erythrocytes and feeding S. platensis as a prebiotic given for 7 or 21 days of administration gives the same result as giving AGPs (Antibiotics Growth Promoters) seen from the broiler's red blood profile.

Abstract

Several herbs have been evaluated as feed additive for chicken, namely tumeric, white tumeric, javanese ginger and black ginger. The purpose of the research was to examine antibacterial activity (inhibition diameter zone and minimum inhibition concentration test) on several herbs extract toward Escherichia coli. In the experiment, there were 6 treatments namely aquadest 100% (A0), antibiotic tetracycline (A1), tumeric extract (A2), white tumeric extract (A3), javanese ginger extract (A4) and black ginger extract (A5) in response to inhibit Escherichia coli. Variables measured were inhibition diameter zone and minimum inhibition concentration test against challenge on Escherichia coli. The experiment was arranged in one way nested ANOVA based on completely randomized design and if there were different effects among variables it would be tested by Duncan’s multiple range test. The result showed that the use of turmeric extract gave highly significant inhibition diameter zone for Escherichia coli (P<0,01), further test indicated that as low as 50% (w/v) concentration of turmeric extract was enable to show as minimum concentration of inhibition against Escherichia coli. The conclusion of this research was among the herbs, selected turmeric extract showed the highest inhibition diameter zone if challance against Escherichia coli with minimum inhibition concentration of 50% (w/v).   Keywords : herbs extract, Escherichia coli, inhibition
