Abstract

This study attempts to determine and analyze the need for ESP learning materials among boarding school students. A needs analysis must be conducted to determine these needs so that students receive the essential materials to support their present learning process or future jobs. The study employed a qualitative approach and a descriptive methodology. An Islamic boarding school's second-grade students comprise the research sample. The instruments of data collection research were questionnaires and interviews. The data are in the form of qualitative techniques taken from the questionnaires, interviews, and observation. Using descriptive methods, the researchers examined the data using percentages. The study's findings indicate that the demands of students living in dorms for ESP English lessons are pretty diversified. Thus, they require English not only for their immediate needs but also for their future careers as international speakers and interpreters. Since the needs of ESP learners are constantly evolving, it is advised that ESP English teachers and other interested parties be able to meet the needs of their students and conduct a needs analysis regularly.

Abstract

It is crucial to learn a new language, especially English, an international language. Nowadays, having the ability to speak English is an essential ability for students to have. Good speaking skills will help them communicate with each other, speak their minds, pronounce words correctly, and construct sentences in grammatically correct terms. This research aims to analyze the students' perception and challenges of speaking skills in the 21st -century. Twenty-six students were taken randomly from three classes enrolled in the Speaking for Informal Interaction of the English Language Education Study Program, Universitas Mahasaraswati Denpasar. The researchers used open-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews and analyzed using the qualitative research approach. Recordings and documents supplemented the instruments. The collected data were transcribed, classified, interpreted, and concluded as the findings of this study. The finding reveals students' perception of the need for English textbooks to support their communicative competencies and some challenges affecting their ability to master speaking skills. Lacking in terms of vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, self-confidence, lack of knowledge, fear of making mistakes, low motivation, fear of criticism, shyness, and nervousness are some challenges the students face. Based on the students' perceptions and challenges, the lecturers are suggested to develop a textbook that can accommodate the student's needs and challenges. Students need a coursebook to build confidence to speak in public.

Abstract

A digital environment produces new concepts and understanding of language learning and teaching. Students are encouraged to be able to manage their goals and learning process independently. However, the success of self-regulated learning (SRL) in the digital era depends on the student's ability to explore the latest technology, which is defined as digital and information literacy. The problem comes when the use of higher technology unbalances students' digital and information literacy levels. Therefore, this research examined digital and information literacy skills as a base for ELF self-regulated learning. The researcher designed quantitative research. The questionnaires were distributed to 70 respondents from EFL students at the Department of English, Universitas Negeri Malang. Questionnaire data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to find digital literacy skills. The result showed that the students have a high level of digital literacy. There are underlying factors affecting their decisions and preferences that were explicated in the questionnaire responses, such as intake year, study load, and motivation. The findings about students' digital literacy can support teachers in planning interactive digital language learning. At the higher education level, there should be more practice and monitoring of collaborative learning activities.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the tpe of flouting maxim that occurs on family’s communication at home domain. The design of this research used descriptive qualitative research. People who did communication at the writer’s home as the subject of this research. The data was collected by using observation, recording the conversation and using field note. Then data was analyzed by using Miles and Huberman Model that consisted three stage, namely data reduction, displaying data and drawing conclusion/verification. The result of the study shows that there are four types of flouting maxim that occurred in family’s communication at home, namely flouting maxim in quality, flouting maxim in quantity, flouting maxim in relevance, and flouting maxim in manner. In doing communication, the flouting maxim is done to get intention and purpose.

Abstract

The move from teacher-centered to learner-centered pedagogy, which empowered students to take charge of their learning, has attracted the researcher to conduct this study. This paper explored the types of vocabulary learning strategies (VLSs) used by intermediate learners of English as a foreign language in Lampung universities and the relationship between VLSs and their speaking ability. It also attempted to find out the most-used and least-used strategies for learning the vocabulary of the English language. It adopted a quantitative correlational research design. One hundred seventy-nine participants as intermediate learners from nine different universities in Lampung participated in this study. An adopted 50-item questionnaire of vocabulary learning strategies was used for data collection. This questionnaire was distributed in two separate sessions: online via the Google Form link and offline through a printed questionnaire. The descriptive statistics analysis of the questionnaire's responses showed that the participants were medium strategy users (mean=3,11). Determination and memory strategies were the most frequently used, while social was the least used. Pearson correlation coefficient on SPSS revealed a fragile relationship between VLSs and the participants' speaking ability where the value is r< 0,30 (r= 0,089). Finally, it is recommended that the teachers help their students become initiative and take responsibility for their success by providing them with a sense of vocabulary learning strategies to enhance their vocabulary knowledge. Moreover, teachers should present a wide range of (VLSs) to their students for both a classroom-related setting and self-directed vocabulary learning.

Abstract

The current article attempts to investigate the motivation of language learning employed by students learning English as a foreign language but living in a state that uses English as a second language, Malaysia. The current research focused on the types of motivation by Gardner & Lambert, namely instrumental and integrative, the dominant types of instrumental and integrative, the differences between natural science and social science, and also what items of students' motivation most related to their language learning. The exploratory, descriptive quantitative method was applied in this study with the total subject (N=18) students of Sekolah Indonesia Kuala Lumpur (SIKL) at XII grade students of natural and social science class categorized into three levels: low, moderate, and high level. A close-ended questionnaire was used, which consisted of fourteen statements adopted from Dornyei's language learning motivation. The study result revealed that in SIKL, students were generally oriented toward instrumental rather than integrative motivation. Both natural and social classes showed that instrumental was more oriented by the students. Furthermore, the students present the motivation to learn English to prepare for a better career and future. Besides, most students present that they are motivated to provide a chance to travel to English countries. The study's findings have implications for the English teaching and learning process, especially for giving good learning materials, methods, and models suitable to their language learning motivation. Furthermore, motivated students tend to put more effort and consistency into their language-learning process, which leads to success.

Abstract

In this digital era, English is the most popular international language. Thus, students have to understand well how to speak in English, but some students feel anxiety when they are asked to speak in English. Thus, in this research, the researcher wants to know whether ICT could minimize the students' anxiety in speaking English. In other words, anxiety is a significant problem for students when the lecturer asks them to speak in front of the class. The sample of this research is 18 students as the total number of students in AKBID Wahana Husada Bandar Jaya in the first semester of the academic year 2022/2023. The research was conducted in AKBID Wahana Husada Bandar Jaya Central Lampung. The researcher used quantitative research, a questionnaire test, and an analysis of the data collected in this research; the researcher used a T-test. The result of this research showed that the use of ICT as media was significantly effective in minimizing the students’ speaking anxiety, and they had a positive perception toward the use of ICT as a media in reducing their anxiety in speaking. The students are more confident in speaking English in front of the class.

Abstract

This paper reviews An Analysis of Associative Meaning From "Aladdin" (2019) Soundtracks Lyrics. This research aims to find meaning in each Aladdin soundtrack as well as the meaning of the lyrics using associative meaning theory. This kind of research is qualitative. The source of this research data is the result of the search for meaning in each existing song, then the result is loaded in the form of tables or data. The result that has been obtained; it can be concluded that the data has associative meaning based on Leech's theory of associative meaning. The results showed that there are 89 data and 4 types of associative meanings found in the 6 soundtracks in the Aladdin movie, 4 of them are; Connotative meaning contains 25 data, Social or Stylistic Meaning contains 24 data, Affective meaning has 23 data, while Collective and Reflective Meaning has 17 data. This study used a qualitative descriptive method in analyzing the data. Leech's theory is used in this study to analyze associative meaning. Implications on Leech's theory are, by observing the collocation of words in lyrics and analysing how these combinations of words form specific associations in the listener's mind. Leech emphasizes the importance of relationships between words in a particular context and how such relationships can form broader meaning, and also by studying lyrics and analysing them by using the Leech Theory framework, readers can develop skills in understanding and analyzing English contextually, not just literally.

Abstract

Movies have been examined as one of the most exciting media that can help students learn listening skills. However, there is limited study on using English movies to enhance students' motivation in listening skills. This research aimed to determine students' perceptions of using movies as a motivational tool in enhancing students' listening skills. This research used qualitative study. The subjects of this study were 31 eleventh-grade students of class BP A at SMK Muhammadiyah Prambanan, Yogyakarta. In collecting data, the researchers used semi-structured interviews where open-ended questions allowed the researchers to freely ask the students and a questionnaire comprising ten items related to students’ responses regarding their motivation in learning to listen. Researchers prepared and organized research data for analysis, which involved compiling and organizing recordings into transcripts and participant observation notes. Most students showed that they were more interested and motivated in learning to listen to English movies. The students felt fun, interested, enjoyed, and more focused during the learning process. They got new vocabulary and understood what was being said in the movies. Pedagogically, this study implies that teachers should consider attractive learning media, especially for teaching listening, to enhance students’ motivation and interest in learning English.

Abstract

The current research aims to determine the significant influence of discovery learning (DL) and reading interest on comprehending students’ text at SMPN 1 Sembawang. This study selected 64 ninth-grade students from SMPN 1 Sembawa as samples using a two-stage random sampling technique. The quantitative factorial design method was applied in this investigation. The data was acquired via a questionnaire and a test: paired Sample t-test, Independent Sample t-test, and Two Ways ANOVA were used to analyze the data. The result showed that the discovery learning method significantly influenced ninth-grade students’ reading comprehension. Second, there was a significant influence of students’ reading interest toward ninth-grade students’ reading comprehension of folktales. Third, the student’s reading comprehension exam substantially impacted the DL and interest in reading. The result suggested that the discovery learning method and reading interest significantly impacted students’ reading comprehension. The study implies that the DLM helped pupils improve their reading comprehension.
