Abstract

In learning English, vocabulary is one of the language aspects and is the most important component as a communication tool that students must master as a basis for mastering English. Vocabulary means basic knowledge and useful material in the form of words that are always used by students in learning a particular language. The aim of this research is to examine the effect of using the fly swatter game on the learning and vocabulary mastery of class XI students at SMA Negeri 2 Metro. This study used a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design. The researcher used the fly swatter game as a teaching technique in the experimental class, while the conventional teaching technique will used in the controlled class. The results of the study using hypothesis testing show that the first test uses a significance level of 5% or a significance level of 0.05. sig. (2-tailed). The t-count (1.420) is lower than the t-table (2,000) with a significance of (0.165) > 0.05. Therefore, it can be said that teaching English vocabulary mastery using the Fly Swatter Game is effective but not significant.

Abstract

Several studies have highlighted the importance of language learning strategies (LLS) for second and foreign-language learners. These strategies have played a significant role in distinguishing between more successful and less successful language learners. However, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 brought about unprecedented changes in the teaching-learning process, with a shift towards online platforms. This study aimed to determine what language learning strategies were applied by the 85 learners of the Mathematics and Biology Departments, ESP (English for Specific Purposes) learners taking English courses during and after the pandemic. In addition, this study also investigated whether there are any similarities or differences in the language learning strategies employed by using comparative design. To collect data, the researcher utilized the Strategy Inventory of Language Learning from Oxford (1990), translated into Indonesian, to ensure clear comprehension among the learners. Descriptive statistics for means and standard deviations were then used to analyze the data. The analysis revealed that, regardless of the circumstances, the students applied all strategies in their learning. Then, they consistently applied the metacognitive and memory strategies more frequently than others.Additionally, the findings indicated that the students utilized the social strategy during the COVID-19 pandemic, while the affective strategy was employed somewhat in the post-pandemic period. The outcomes of this study have significant implications as they raise awareness among learners and ESP instructors about the benefits of employing language learning strategies. Recognizing and utilizing these strategies can significantly enhance language learning outcomes. By understanding the preferred strategies employed by students during different periods, instructors can tailor their teaching approaches accordingly to maximize the effectiveness of language instruction.

Abstract

Each student has individual differences, including intelligence profiles, that teachers must consider. The recent curriculum, Kurikulum Merdeka, emphasizes the freedom for the teacher to plan the lesson based on students’ needs and abilities. Since teachers widely use textbooks as a source and guidance to conduct an appropriate teaching-learning process, it is essential to have textbooks that accommodate students’ multiple intelligences. This study aimed to determine the representation of Multiple Intelligences in primary school textbooks titled My Next Words. This study used content analysis as the research method. Eight units were chosen, with two randomly selected from each of the four textbooks. The data were gathered by administering a coding sheet and analyzed by calculating the frequency of occurrence. The results indicated that My Next Words textbooks accommodate all types of intelligences to a certain degree. The most frequently occurring types of intelligence are verbal/linguistic and visual/spatial intelligence. This study can serve as a source for teachers to recognize and address various intelligences, helping them to adapt their teaching material. Besides, it can inform textbook developers to enhance the content of textbooks to provide more diverse material that caters to different intelligences.

Abstract

Rhetorical studies in various texts have been widely conducted. However, compared to studies in written text, spoken text still received very little scholarly attention. For example, studies on rhetorical structure within the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) are hardly found in the literature. Responding to this fundamental need, this study intends to investigate what rhetorical model IELTS test takers employ to make their English-speaking receive excellent scores. This study analyzes ten IELTS speaking tests that receive band seven or above to realize this intention. These ten videos of IELTS speaking tests were taken from YouTube using standard criteria. Their recordings were transcribed to find their rhetorical model, and a top-down analytical approach was employed to find functional moves and strategies to achieve speakers' intentions. The results showed two communicative moves and six strategies as a rhetorical model used by the IELTS test takers who received band seven or above in the present study. This finding implies that understanding the rhetorical model of IELTS speaking may improve awareness of responding to interviewers' requests.

Abstract

This study examines the duration of adult EFL learners’ extramural English activities related to their phonological awareness. For this purpose, (Indonesian, N = 32, 3 males and 29 females) learners participated in the study. After analyzing the questionnaires and the phonological awareness test using the non-parametric (Spearman) correlation, the result showed a strong positive correlation between the amount of time the adult EFL learners spend for spoken and written extramural English activities and their phonological awareness ability. The extramural English activities they mainly engage in are dealing with technology. The findings call for future research examining the effect of extramural English on phonological awareness and other possible English components or skills.

Abstract

The Love Myself Campaign, a collaborative project between BTS and UNICEF, is a campaign that voices the importance of loving yourself. As part of the campaign, BTS gave a speech at the 73rd UN General Assembly on September 28, 2018. The researcher used the speech text in this campaign as data in literature research, which was analyzed using a descriptive qualitative method. The study aims to discover how mental health awareness is conveyed through the transitivity system. Systemic Functional Linguistics by M.A.K. Halliday is used as a theory to analyze data, more precisely, the transitivity system in ideological meta functions. This meta function sees language as a symbol of human experience in the real world and the mind. Meanwhile, transitivity is a system that represents human experience as a process. The researcher found three dominators: the mental process (20) showed that the speaker tried to motivate the audience through his or her personal feelings and experiences; the first person "I" (42) showed that the speaker made himself the central subject of the speech. The non-circumstance clause (53) showed that the speech was global. Through these results, it can be concluded that the soft campaign method conveys the concept of mental health awareness in speech.

Abstract

The post-pandemic landscape, shaped by COVID-19, has ushered in substantial socio-cultural shifts, particularly in teaching and learning practices. The transition from traditional in-person learning to rapid adoption of online methods, followed by a return to in-person learning, necessitated adjustments in educational habits. This transformation is further emphasized by the Merdeka curriculum's implementation in the Academic Year 2022/2023, influencing the approach of textbook authors. This research uses Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Fairclough's three-dimensional model to scrutinize five 7th-grade English textbooks from different publishers within the Merdeka curriculum framework. The analysis explores the socio-cultural and post-pandemic content, providing nuanced insights into how these materials address challenges and transformations induced by the COVID-19 pandemic. Acknowledging the inherent connection between language and socio-cultural elements, the study examines how the textbooks balance Western influences with Indonesian socio-cultural content. Additionally, it investigates how the textbooks incorporate memories of the global pandemic, contributing to the evolving landscape of English education in Indonesia.
