Abstract

This study aims to determine the significant influence of the CIRC and TPS models on students' reading comprehension of narrative texts at SMKN 8 Tangerang Regency. To achieve this, a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design was employed. The study used three classes: two as experimental classes and one as a control class. The first experimental class used the TPS method, the second used the CIRC method, and the control class used conventional models. The data analysis in this study used an independent t-test and an ANOVA test. The results of this study indicated that there was an increase in reading comprehension from the third grade. However, the two experimental classes improved better than the control class, with the post-test score of the experimental class using TPS at 75.97 and the post-test result using the CIRC method at 76.17.Meanwhile, the results of the post-test of the control class were 65.46.for the results of hypothesis analysis of the TPS class method using an independent t-test, a significance value of 0.004 was obtained, the CIRC method class was 0.002, and for the ANOVA hypothesis test, a significance value of 0.002 was obtained. The TPS and CIRC models significantly influence reading comprehension in grade ten at SMKN 8 Tangerang Regency. Therefore, this research is expected to provide implications for applying the Think-Pair-Share (TPS) and Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) models in improving students' reading ability in high school/equivalent in Indonesia.

Abstract

Writing skills are still considered difficult and complex to master by second and foreign language students. Hence, students need to have a good self-regulated learning (SRL) strategy to enhance their writing quality. Furthermore, different types of students' cognitive styles may influence the effect of the SRL strategy used by the students in writing. This article aims to investigate the effect of SRL strategy on the writing quality of students with different cognitive styles. By employing an ex post facto research design, thirty-nine English students joined this study. Direct writing test, SRL questionnaire, and Group Embedded Figure Test (GEFT) were used to collect the data, and simultaneous regression was used to analyze the data. The findings indicate that students' SRL levels and cognitive styles vary, which in turn affects their writing quality. However, the result of the simultaneous regression calculation (0.384) was higher than the significance level (0.05). It means that there was no significant effect of the SRL strategy on the writing quality of students having different cognitive styles simultaneously. Those variables may affect students' writing quality independently. The implication is that EFL instructors should consider individual learner factors independently rather than assuming interaction between SRL and cognitive styles.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of how EFL students perceive English and their indigenous language in multilingual settings. The participants of this study were EFL students at a private university in West Java, Indonesia, who speak at least two languages, including English and indigenous languages. Participants in the study were given questionnaires and interviews as part of the data collection process. The findings demonstrated that the participants had positive attitudes toward English and their first language. They did not assert that one language was more prestigious or better than the other. The investigation showed that their attitude toward English and their first language was ambivalent. Despite having so close interaction with various languages and cultures, the participants were nevertheless able to keep their native tongue and culture. On one side, the findings showed such relief that the participants were able to maintain their indigenous language. However, the teachers should also be aware of participants’ foreign language acquisition since English and their native language are from different language families.

Abstract

Project-Based Learning (PjBL) is recognised for fostering active learning; yet, its application in entirely online English Language Teaching (ELT) is still inadequately examined, especially from the viewpoint of educators in Indonesian higher education. This study fills the gap by analysing the experiences of four English instructors at a private university in Yogyakarta. Employing a qualitative descriptive methodology, data were gathered via semi-structured interviews and thematically analysed to investigate the obstacles, tactics, and possibilities associated with implementing PjBL in online environments. The findings underscore several impediments, including insufficient student participation, issues in tracking project advancement, and difficulties in evaluating both technical and interpersonal abilities. Educators implemented solutions such as consistent consultation-driven feedback, integration of digital tools, and modified assessment techniques to tackle these challenges. The study indicates that online PjBL can improve students' digital literacy, creativity, and soft skills; however, it acknowledges structural limitations, including unequal access to technology, which may impede its wider use. These findings offer pragmatic insights for enhancing online English Language Teaching practices and contribute to the expanding literature on the adaptation of PjBL for virtual learning settings, with implications for educators, curriculum developers, and policymakers seeking more inclusive and effective digital pedagogies.

Abstract

Stance becomes an important evaluative discourse feature that aids writers in conveying their arguments effectively. Studies have focused on comparing the stance of non-native speakers of English to that of native speakers and have not yet addressed the issue between English learners from different contexts. This study analyzes stance complement clauses controlled by adjectives by Singaporean ESL and Indonesian EFL students. It aims to uncover the frequency and distribution of stances and to explain why Singaporean students' stances differ from those of their Indonesian EFL counterparts. This study used quantitative and qualitative methods. The chi-squared test was carried out to determine whether there was a significant difference. The data were extracted from a sub-written ICNALE corpus, the essays by Singaporean and Indonesian students at the B1_2 level. The chi-squared test indicates there is a significant difference. The results reveal a higher use of stance adjectives among Singaporean ESL students compared to Indonesian EFL students. This study has important implications. Explicit teaching and learning of stance features used adequately in the argument's structure are needed, especially highlighting adjectival repertoire for variety and nuance to the EFL students' stance.

Abstract

The Project-Based Learning (PBL) model is still rarely used in learning to write recount texts, even though it has significant potential to improve students' writing skills. Therefore, this research focuses on improving students' recount text writing skills using Project-Based Learning (PBL) models. It aims to see how effectively the PBL models can improve students' ability to write Recount Text for SMA Negeri 21 Bandung tenth-grade students. This research uses a quantitative approach with a survey design. The data collection technique for this research uses a questionnaire with the application of a five-point Likert scale with descriptive statistics analysis. Based on the survey, the findings of this research show that using the PBL models can effectively improve students' ability to write recount text. The survey results showed an average score of 3.74, with 7.4% of respondents strongly agreeing, 61.1% agreeing, 29.6% neutral, and 1.9% disagreeing. In addition, student perceptions state that this model helps learning and increases Motivation and engagement. The survey revealed that students felt more motivated to write Recount Text after participating in PBL. The data showed that 5.6% of respondents strongly agreed, 55.6% agreed, and 37.0%  respondents were neutral. The study also found that PBL models involved students more in learning activities than other models, with an average score of 3.65. The implications of this research show that PBL improves students' ability to write recount texts by involving them in projects, providing constructive feedback, and increasing activity, Motivation, and creativity.

Abstract

This research was conducted in response to the ongoing challenges faced by students in learning English writing skills in non-English-speaking countries, particularly in making writing engaging and effective. The study focuses on the use of Padlet as a digital tool to improve students' personal letter-writing skills. The purpose of this research is to determine whether Padlet significantly improves students' writing scores and affects their overall writing abilities. A quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test control group was employed. The participants were grade XI students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Pekalongan, divided into an experimental class using Padlet and a control class using the conventional method. The research used writing tests as the main instrument, assessed through five aspects: content, organization, vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests, then analyzed using t-tests to determine statistical significance. The findings show that students taught using Padlet scored higher in all aspects of writing, indicating a significant improvement and positive effect on their writing skills. It can be concluded that Padlet is an effective medium for enhancing writing quality and student engagement. This research suggests that teachers should consider integrating interactive digital tools, such as Padlet, into writing instruction to overcome challenges and boost students' motivation and performance.
