Abstract

This article describes the thinking and consistency of a figure of the National Movement, Mohammad Hatta, during his exile in Banda Naira in 1963–1942. Research uses historical methods through heuristic, critical, interpretative, and historiographic stages. The main sources used were the work of the historian's books, other reference books, observations of objects in the house of his exile, and interviews with Banda Naira people. The study found that Mohammad Hatta, during Banda Naira's exile, remained critical (non-cooperative) of colonial policy. Hatta's routine on the spice island is filled with various activities to educate the community and the young generation of Banda, ranging from reading, writing, sports, attending public wedding invitations, speaking in mosques, forming youth organizations (PERBAMU), to playing the role of setting up the "School of Sore," which teaches many things about humanity, socialism, democracy, religion, morals, patriotism, and nationalism. Mr. Hatta's educational style has opened a veil of backwardness and stupidity to the Banda children, who live under the influence of Dutch hedonism. Hatta's thoughts, actions, and ignorance have shaped new knowledge for the generation of Banda. Traditional and Islamic religion in Banda Naira also influenced Hatta's mind to find the concept of building an independent Indonesia. As a legacy of Hatta's religious values and national spirit, the Banda community named the two people on the island (Hatta Island and Sjahrir Island), as well as a mosque called Hatta-Sjahrir in Banda Naira.

Abstract

This qualitative study explores the experiences of selected lecturers of African languages in South Africa. Through in-depth interviews, the study reveals that apartheid-era segregation shaped early dispositions towards language teaching, while multilingual upbringings sparked interest in African languages, though colonial policies suppressed their use in schools. While post-apartheid policies have promoted the use, teaching and learning of African languages in higher education, lecturers of these languages still face the challenge of lack of institutional support and the unavailability of resources. Using a Bourdieusian theoretical lens, the study shows how broader discourses around language, identity and power manifest in lecturers’ efforts to revalue African language education. Lecturer’s habitus was shaped by familial, sociopolitical and educational contexts orienting them toward language teaching. Furthermore, strategic accumulation of cultural capital through credentials enabled progression into academia. By leveraging social capital via professional networks, they accessed information and advocacy to become lecturers. Within the competitive field of academia, they continuously strove for more prestigious positions and capital. To counter institutional barriers, lecturers have collaborated with language communities to develop localized pedagogies validating indigenous cultures. A key finding is that technology access enabled lecturers to effectively perform roles, publish research, and accumulate capital to advance professionally over time. This study gives voice to lecturers’ multifaceted experiences teaching African languages in South African universities. The findings further provide insights to guide policies and practices supporting marginalized language teaching.

Abstract

The methods employed in science instruction are experiencing a transformation, with novel approaches like the Culturo-Techno-Contextual Approach (CTCA) emerging as more efficacious variant. This study explored the efficacy of CTCA in improving the achievement of secondary school students in biology. The study employed an explanatory sequential design. The quantitative phase was quasi-experimental, while the qualitative phase was an in-depth interview. A total of 103 senior secondary II students (the equivalent of grade 11) from two purposively selected schools in Lagos State education district V were sampled. The Achievement Test in Tissue and supporting system which had reliability coefficients of 0.8, were the instruments used to collect quantitative data, while the students’ perception about CTCA interview guide was used to collect the qualitative data. Both groups had a pretest and posttest using the achievement test; treatment lasted four weeks. Data gathered in the survey were analyzed using ANCOVA since intact classes were used. The result obtained showed that the experimental group (mean for experimental = 10.53; control 6.83; F (1, 100) = 34.42; p < 0.05) outperformed the control group. Therefore, the study concluded that CTCA is a potent approach for improving students’ achievement in biology. It was recommended that the use of CTCA should be adopted by biology teachers in secondary schools to enhance learning.

The lack of highlight on teachers’ psychological aspects in scientific study triggers the urgency to frame their teaching anxiety. In Indonesian context, educational sectors adapt new curriculum that motivates teachers to create innovations. Unfortunately, the trends center students’ aspects and exploration on teachers’ wellbeing is underexplored. Therefore, this study is objectively aimed to reveal the anxiety levels of EFL teachers in ELT practices under the influence of Merdeka curriculum in junior high schools and to scrutinize the significant differences of their anxiety levels based on the vary of demographic profiles. Quantitative research with survey design was conducted by spreading online and offline 5-points Likert scales of FLTAS (Foreign Language Teaching Anxiety Scales) questionnaire modified from Aydin & Uştuk (2020), to the 60 EFL teachers in Surakarta who professionally experienced in adapting the new curriculum. The data were analyzed by running descriptive analysis, t-test, and ANOVA on SPSS v.29.0. The results showed that teachers performed low frequent anxiety levels on language proficiency (=1.73-2.27), teaching experience (=1.65-2.07), apprehension of evaluation (=1.98-2.23), and time management (=1.93-2.08). Interestingly, they reported high frequent anxiety regarding issues of students’ interest (=2.78-3.13). The demographic backgrounds on gender, school types, and teaching experiences contributed significant variations on their anxiety. Abstract

Indonesia is one of the countries in the Asia Pacific region that has good food security indicators, but until now local food products have not been able to shift rice and wheat flour which still dominate. The urgency of local food research is very urgent in order to strengthen the treasures of local wisdom in the face of increasingly massive modernization. This research was conducted in Ohoi Langgur, Kei Kecil Sub-district, Southeast Maluku Regency. This research used qualitative method with case study approach and Miles and Huberman interactive analysis model. The results of this research show that; First, according to oral sources, enbal food comes from Bali which was brought by their parents from before the Dutch colonization. Second, there are 2 types of Enbal food processing, namely traditional and modern methods. The traditional process of making Enbal begins with peeling the sweet potato and then grating it using a machine and after that it is put into a bag and then clamped so that it releases toxic water. After drying, the enbal gepe (pinch) is grated so that it is smooth so that it can be used in the processing process. The modern process uses electricity-based electronic equipment. Third, currently new variants of enbal-based dishes have been developed. Fourth, the values contained in enbal food culture are in line with the philosophy of the Kei community, namely Ain Ni Ain, namely the value of solidarity which further strengthens the bonds of brotherhood (social cohesion) of the community, especially among Kei youth.

Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze the unique experiences, understandings, and meanings of planners in the process of preparing the Local Government Work Plan (RKPD) in Lembata Regency. The method used is qualitative phenomenology. The data analysis technique uses Interpretative Phenomenology Analysis (IPA). The results show that the planners' experiences include: inconsistent planning processes, planning without work guidelines, planning without commitment, and partial planning. The planners' understanding is planning oriented towards process and output. Unique interpretations include loyalty to the planning organization, awareness of the mismatch between planning and budgeting, interpreting planning as the basis for development, and the need for strategies to improve the work system. In response to this, for future planning, the Lembata Regency planning agency needs to do several things, including increasing understanding of basic matters such as organizational structure of work procedures and planning rules, developing planning guidelines and standard operating procedures for planning, collaborating process and substance approaches in preparing planning documents, strengthening coordination, increasing the capacity of planning resources, and implementing a merit system in transfers and rotations within the planning agency.
