Abstract

Learning method applied in Faculty of Dentistry of Brawijaya University is Problem-based Learning (PBL). One of the purposes of PBL is to develop students’ ability of self-directed learning (SDL). SDL is students’ ability to learn independently. This ability is necessary to determine the need and objective of students’ learning. This research aims to compare the ability of SDL of the first-year students and the third-year students of undergraduate program in Faculty of Dentistry of Brawijaya University. This is pre-experimental research using one-group pretest-posttest design. Samples are divided into two groups. The first group is pre-test group consisting of students of 2014 that have ever joined PBL in their first year. Meanwhile, post-test group consists of students of 2014 that have ever joined PBL on their third year. Instrument used in this research is adapted questionnaires. Data is analyzed using Independent Samples T-test, resulting in significant difference of students’ SDL scores between the first year and the third year (p<0.05). The average SDL score of the first year is 228.85 while the third year is 218.20. It can be concluded from this research that students’ SDL score in the first year is higher than that in the third year, and both of them are significantly different.

Abstract

Indonesian students started learning English from kindergarten with the purpose of intruducing basic English vocabulary as a component from language material in learning English. Teaching English vocabulary is one of the important language skills. This research tries to describe the use of spelling game in teaching vocabulary to kindergarten students. The data were analyzed using qualitative descriptive analysis. The subjects were students of Children Center Brawijaya Smart School A & B. That class consists of fifty students divided into four small classes. For completing the data, the researcher used questionnaire, interview, observation checklist and video recording to record the teaching and learning process. The result exposes that the teaching strategies mostly used were listen and repeat, listen and do, draw and color, and the spelling strategies mostly used was phonetic spelling strategies. For the Language games mostly used was movement game, card game, drawing game and word game. From analysis it was implied that the effectiveness of spelling games at Children Center Brawijaya Smart School in teaching English vocabulary can be classified to the category “very good”. It is suggested to the teacher try to be using various media in order to support the learning process in the class, to be able to make the individual approaches well. Finally, it is recommended to the further researcher to maximize the result and improve the weakness of this research for make a better research analysis.

Abstract

This study aims to obtain an overview of the improvement in student mathematics learning outcomes using manipulatives with Cooperative Learning Everyone is a Teacher Here (ETH- cooperative learning) and students who learn to use manipulatives with conventional learning. The research design used was quasi-experiment with the type of pretest posttest control group design with a population of all first-level students who were studying matriculation at one of the STIKES in Indonesia. The number of samples of two classes was selected by purposive sampling, with the number of control class students being 38 people and the experimental class being 44 people. Class A as a control class gets conventional learning using manipulatives. Class B as an experimental class receives learning by using manipulatives through ETH-cooperative learning. The result is an increase in mathematics learning outcomes of students who learn to use manipulatives with ETH-cooperative learning higher than students who learn to use conventional manipulatives.

Abstract

in general, chemical engineering has the aim to direct students in understanding the basic concepts of chemical engineering, fuel, and lubricating oil in the automotive field. One of the subjects is calculating octane numbers of gasoline which involve mathematical operations, which can cause anxiety to the learner. Therefore, a learning approach is needed that can reduce mathematical anxiety through problem posing. The application of problem posing aims to improve student learning outcomes. Before being applied, lesson study (plan-do-see) was carried out. The sample consists of 32 students, with the technique of collecting observation data & pre-test & post-test. Data were analyzed descriptively and t-test. The results of the study found an  increase in learning outcomes as seen by the post-test score = 89.75 higher than the pre-test score = 78.5.

Abstract

Educational institutions need clearer directions for all members of the organization. Organizations need people who are able to set the direction forward, spread it to all members of the organization, direct people to achieve goals, build networks with other institutions, provide incentives, motivate and reward subordinates who excel. People who are able to do such things are called visionary leaders. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the visionary leadership strategy in advancing educational institutions, so as to produce a perfect human being who can answer the challenges of every age. This research method uses a qualitative approach with library research methods. Sources of data obtained from books, research results, journals, or scientific information related to visionary leadership strategies. The results were obtained that visionary leadership was felt as an urgent need for educational institutions, in order to be able to realize an advanced educational institution and to be the center of attention and expectations of the wider community. Visionary leaders have a realistic leadership vision, can be convincing and guide the organization to achieve an ideal of the future that is better than current conditions. Visionary leadership is always consistent and focused on achieving vision, practice is not rigid in facing organizational challenges and opportunities.

Abstract

Jumantik plays a pivotal role in the control of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF). Participatory mapping training can enhance its risk of transmission recognition. This research aims to identify the potential use of DHF risk factors participatory mapping training for Jumantik. This experimental research carried out from October 2013-January 2014 in four DHF highest prevalence regions in Malang. Mapping is based on data from Google Earth, DHF risk factors like homes, ovitrap sites, and larva-positive buildings, and the DHF prevalence over the past 6 months. The results indicate a variety of participant’s capacity to generate maps while the ability to analyze and plan was conspicuously absent. Qualitative data reveals there's an intention to map DHF individually by a few numbers of jumantik and primary healthcare staff. The conclusion is that this training prototype can be further adapted by accounting participant’s features, approaches, and capabilities as well as primary healthcare commitment for its continuity.

Abstract

The learning activities of financial accounting practice in Malang State Polytechnic (also called Polinema) have not been able to generate learning results meeting the real-world needs, in respect of the cognitive, psychomotor and affective aspects. Thereby, the researcher developed a new method in the future learning: PAIKEM (which stands for Pembelajaran Aktif, Inovatif, Kreatif, Efektif dan Menyenangkan - Active, Innovative, Creative, Effective and Fun Learning) using student-centered learning, case-based learning and cooperative learning for efficiency and effectiveness of learning. The purpose of this study is to develop and apply the PAIKEM method with student-centered learning, case-based learning, and cooperative learning to generate high-quality human resources in the accounting department of Polinema for competing in global or international markets. This is explanatory research discussing the effect of teacher-centered learning, student-centered learning, project-based learning, creative learning, effective learning, and fun learning variables on the efficiency and effectiveness of learning. This research employs a population of 400 students and a sample of 180 students taken by purposive sampling with a 5-point Likert scale measurement. The data analysis method utilized multiple linear regressions. The primary data source was collected through documentation from the questionnaire. The results revealed that the project-based learning, cooperative learning, and fun learning variables had a significant effect on efficiency while the teacher-centered learning, student-centered learning, creative learning, and effective learning variables did not significantly affect learning efficiency. Furthermore, student-centered learning, cooperative learning, effective learning, and fun learning variables had a significant effect on learning effectiveness; while the teacher-centered learning, case-based learning, creative learning variables did not.
