Abstract

A well-established needs analysis is essential for a successful language program. This article reports the results of a questionnaire-based survey conducted to a sample of 44 Indonesian and 16 international students enrolled in an undergraduate medical school in an Indonesian university. The data were compared in terms of the mean, standard deviation and percentage. The results showed both groups perceived reading skills as their most important language skills to acquire, which was followed by speaking, listening and writing consecutively. The needs for improving reading skills were confirmed in the analysis of students’ areas of difficulties, where both groups were in consensus in perceiving reading medical English texts as the most challenging task.

Abstract

In an international communication context, English becomes an International language , commonly known as English as an International Language (EIL). EIL sees various English accents equally because intelligibility, being able to deliver message clearly to listeners, is the main goal in a communication. Therefore, Indonesian EFL (English as a foreign language) students need to focus their English mastery on intelligibility over native-likeness accent when learning English. However, whether or not the students concentrate their English learning more on intelligibility is still unknown yet. To identify which aspects EFL students focus on, the research examined Indonesian EFL students’ attitudes toward their L1-accented English. The main aim is to enhance their awareness that intelligibility is the key component in an English communication. Also, English teachers hopefully discuss the intelligibility in their teaching. Thus, the targeted learning results, particularly related to speaking skills development, are more reachable so the students are more encouraged to develop their English. The study involved 46 students (14 males and 32 females) from University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), East Java. The implemented instrument as a data collection is a questionnaire. The collected data were organized and then analyzed to find out EFL students’ attitudes perceiving their Indonesian-accented English. The researcher figured out that EFL students had less positive attitude towards their own English accent. That perception might be caused by their low linguistic awareness, excessive exposure to the Internet (YouTube, International news) made by native speakers of English. The result of data analysis will be elaborated to interweave the investigation outcomes with classroom context so the outcomes could be implemented in classroom instruction. Keywords: Accent, Intelligibility, EIL and attitude.

Abstract

In the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL), the state of being successful in foreign language learning should not be only determined by how well they perform in the written test but also by how good they are at using the target language to communicate messages orally. Beside getting more exposure to the target language as the language input for language learning, implementing appropriate learning strategies has proven to be one of influential aspects in  contributing to the students’ success in learning English. In relation to this, this study aims to investigate kinds of learning strategies that have been implemented by successful students majoring in Hotel Management at Vocational Program of Universitas Brawijaya. After careful selection of the successful students, in-depth investigation to reveal their kinds of learning strategies were done by observing their classroom performance, distributing questionnaire, and interviewing them for further details of information. The results show that the students have employed compensation, meta-cognitive, social and cognitive strategies in helping them learn the target language. Future researchers are suggested to conduct a study on language learning strategies involving more learners from other majors in relation to their language learning.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of an 8-week Latin aerobics on the static and dynamic balance of children with congenital blindness. Ten (10) congenitally blind children participated in this single-group experimental research. This study tested the static balance of the participants through One Leg Stance (OLS) and the dynamic balance through Timed Up To Go (TUG). The data were analysed through paired t-test. Results of the study showed statistically significant differences during the OLS pre- and post-tests of the right and left legs. No statistically significant differences were observed when the OLS pre- and post-test scores of the right and left legs were compared. The result of the pre- and post-test in the TUG was statistically different. The findings highlighted the effectiveness of Latin aerobics in improving the static and dynamic balance of congenitally blind children.
