Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the isotherm, kinetics, and thermodynamics of remazol yellow FG dye adsorption by ZnCl2-activated bamboo charcoal. The research was started by making charcoal from bamboo stems, then the quality was checked against SNI. Adsorption isotherms were tested against Langmuir and Freundlich models. The adsorption kinetics were examined against pseudo-1st and pseudo-2nd orders and thermodynamic parameters were determined by measuring the values of enthalpy (∆Ho), entropy (∆So), and free energy (∆Go). The values of ∆Ho, ∆So, and ∆Go are -29.747 KJ/mol, -93.798 J/mol, and -1.327 KJ/mol respectively. The adsorption of remazol yellow FG by activated bamboo charcoal was spontaneous. Keywords: adsorption, kinetics, chromium, bamboo charcoal, thermodynamics

Abstract

Banana peels have been widely used as a biosorbent for metal ion adsorption. However, the small size of banana peels as a biosorbent leads to difficulty in the separation process of banana peels from the aqueous solution. Thus, the banana peels were impregnated into PVA/Alginate beads to increase the biosorbent size using the (W/O) emulsion process. Various amounts of banana peels were impregnated into beads. The obtained beads were used to adsorb copper(II) ions from aqueous solutions. The result shows that beads could extract the copper(II) ion from an aqueous solution containing 0.7875 ppm copper(II) ion at pH 4 with the quantity of extraction was 0.729 mmol/g. The effect of contact time and initial concentration indicates that the adsorption process of copper(II) ion from aqueous solution using beads follows the Langmuir isothermal adsorption and the adsorption kinetic follows the pseudo-second-order equation. Hence, the adsorption mechanism follows a chemisorption process with monolayer formation on the PVA/Alginate containing banana peels. Further investigation was carried out and found that the surface reaction and film diffusion occurred at initial stage of contact time, adsorptive diffusion through pores occurred at the later stage.

Abstract

The paper reports the in vivo and in vitro antidiabetic activity of bioactive compounds composed of ethyl acetate fractions from Sungkai (Peronema canescens Jack). The fractions are obtained from vacuum liquid chromatography (F1, F2 and F3). Phytochemicals screening, UV-Vis and FTIR spectrometry analysis is applied to detect secondary metabolite composed of the fractions. In addition, in vitro antidiabetic capability is measured inhibiting a-amylase activity, and in vivo evaluation is conducted using diabetic rat's model induced by alloxan. It was found that fraction collected as a white precipitate. The phytochemical analysis indicated positive for flavonoid. UV-Vis and FTIR spectra support the data. Moreover, capability of the fractions to inhibit a-glucosidase activity in the range 5-100 ppm does not show the activity. Conversely, the in vivo evaluation from fraction 2 at concentration 600 mg/Kg of body weight has antidiabetic in 50.16%. This result comparable to that of glibenclamide as a control. This finding lead to further evaluation for structural elucidation.

Abstract

Several crystallization strategies are being implemented to enhance the solubility of acetaminophen, also known as paracetamol. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the cooling and anti-solvent crystallization on the properties of acetaminophen. The results showed that the anti-solvent recrystallization produced achieved an impressive yield of up to 41.40%, while the cooling method yielded approximately 2–9%. Through FTIR, XRD, and DSC analysis on the samples, it was discovered that these methods had minimum effects on the molecular and thermal properties of the compound. Furthermore, the methods did not alter the crystallinity of acetaminophen, with crystal form I dominating the products. In addition, processing using the cooling and anti-solvent effectively reduced particle size of acetaminophen from 68.60 μm to 26.92 μm and 28.25 µm, respectively. In conclusion, the solubility of paracetamol in aqueous solutions experienced a significant enhancement. In the unprocessed samples, it measured 0.0107 gram/ml, while the recrystallized samples had an improved range of 0.0123 to 0.0167 g/ml.

Abstract

One of the aquaculture wastes is shrimp pond wastewater (SPW). Generally, SPW comes from the rest of shrimp feed, shrimp dung, and died shrimp during the cultivation. As SPW is organic waste, biological wastewater treatment is the best choice. Biological method has low operating costs and environmentally friendly. There are two kind of biological methods, namely aerobic and anaerobic. Both methods have advantages and disadvantages. In this research, the performance of aerobic and anaerobic methods in treating SPW were investigated using batch experiment for more than 200 days. The results showed that the performance of the aerobic system in the initial phase was better than that of the anaerobic system, especially, in phase one which is the adaptation phase. In the first phase, COD, carbohydrate and protein removal in the aerobic system were 25.93%, 75.2% and 88.59%, while in the anaerobic system were 12.82%, 36.03% and 51.01%. In phases 5 to 10, both systems have similar performance with the optimum performance in phase 9 with 6 times substrate dilution. In this optimum phase, the COD removal values are 90% and 85% for aerobic and anaerobic systems, respectively. Meanwhile, the removal of carbohydrates and protein from both systems is about 95%.

Abstract

This study aims to synthesize silver-palm kernel expeller ash (PKE) composites using in-situ combustion at 600 °C. Compared to previous methods, the novel in-situ combustion was developed to easily obtain composites in the laboratory using simple procedures. The products obtained were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The results showed that the composites contained silver metal peaks and some peaks of a mixture of compounds predicted to be calcium phosphate, calcium hypophosphate, and other undetermined metal oxides. In addition, X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis showed the presence of several important minerals derived from PKE combustion. Composites obtained in this study showed better activity as catalysts in the removal of congo-red under sunlight irradiation compared to only PKE ash. Based on these results, the by-products of palm oil processing had the potential to be used for advanced materials preparation.

Abstract

The study of functional groups and heat resistance of energy-importing materials, as well as the inclusion of coupling agents, were the primary subjects of this article. 3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl methacrylate was the coupling agent employed in this study to alter the surface of the silica in the composite material being created. Furthermore, the emergence of bifunctional organometallic (silane) connecting groups allowed the coupling agent to improve the energy storage material's heat resistance. Through the using of dynamic mechanical analysis, scanning electronic microscopy, and thermal tests. It was determined how the type of coupling material affected the interfacial bond strength. According to the findings, there was a significant interaction between the coupling material and the filler surface that had an impact on the material's heat resistance.

Abstract

Erucamide is a long-chain carboxylic acid amide used as a slip agent in plastic films. In this research, the slip additive in polypropylene masterbatch with 6% erucamide content was extracted by comparing two methods which are dissolution-precipitation and the Soxhlet method. The variant of sonication times in the dissolution-precipitation method and extractor-solvents in the Soxhlet method were done to determine the optimum parameter in each method. The examination of slip additive content in each extraction method used the KBr Disk-FTIR and the weight loss of sample analysis. The form of the sample, which was in the granule and powder form was also studied. Based on the result, the dissolution-precipitation method with 3 minutes of sonication times and the use of ethyl acetate as extractor solvent in the Soxhlet method gave a closer result for additive content in the masterbatch. The powder form of the sample also gave better results than the granule form for the extraction of erucamide. The Soxhlet method in the powder form showed comparable results with the dissolution-precipitation method by KBr Disk-FTIR analysis and higher results by weight loss analysis. By comparing the two methods of extraction, the Soxhlet method showed more robustness and efficiency for extraction of erucamide additive in polypropylene masterbatch than the dissolution-precipitation method.

Abstract

Bacterial cellulose (BC) and chitosan (Chi) are biopolymers that play a vital role in various industrial applications due to their unique properties, such as biodegradability, biocompatibility, flexibility, and excellent physical properties. Combined, these two materials can create composites with exceptional characteristics, which can be tailored for specific applications. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different ultrasonication and stirring treatments on the synthesis of BC/Chi composites, focusing on their chemical, physical, and mechanical properties. Based on the results of microscopy, SEM-EDS, and FTIR analysis, it was found that ultrasonication treatment provides a more effective dispersion process, resulting in higher physical and mechanical properties than BC/Chi stirring.
