Abstract

Linguistic discrimination is critical to student achievement, as it is the intimidating nature of a person's use and style of language that tends to be denigrated or unfairly tolerated in their own environment. The study provide an explanation regarding how discrimination of linguistic can affect student achievement in teaching English at SMA Negeri 2 Pinrang. For the research objective, observations were made in three classes at different times to determine the effect of student achievement. The data were obtained by interviewing two English teachers and six students regarding their views on attitudes and beliefs during the learning process in class. After being analyzed, it appears that there is unconscious discrimination and this can affect the English learning process itself, not respecting the level of the language itself, pressure from the teacher, affecting student competence in some aspects such as fear of communication, homogenization of achievement, fear of evaluation negative, academic, extra visibility of high ability students, mother tongue restriction, difficulty interacting, self-isolation, and discriminatory jokes. The results of this study indicate that all forms of discriminatory behavior both from classmates and teachers can affect student achievement. So that negative behavior also produces negative responses such as fear, anxiety, and separation so that it limits and restrains student participation in the learning process.

Abstract

Merdeka Curriculum has changed how teachers prepare the lessons. Leading to the necessary understanding of critical aspects of the teaching module making. This study characterizes the learning objectives of the Merdeka curriculum teaching module using Schwiers' ABCD behavioral objectives and Bloom's learning domains theory. It also explores the factors that hinder teachers from fully comprehending the three learning domains (cognitive, affective, and psychomotor) when designing a teaching module. This study utilized a qualitative approach with two junior high school teachers as participants. Analyzing the teaching modules and interviewing participants were performed. Using Schwiers' ABCD and Bloom's learning domains model, this study found that teachers had already focused on learner-centered activities. However, some inconsistencies arose in the presence of 'ABCD' components and three learning objectives statements. Factors like demotivation, lack of prior knowledge, insufficient practice and feedback, understanding gaps, time constraints, and overcrowded curriculum hindered teachers from applying the learning domains. In conclusion, integrating ABCD components and learning domains in a teaching module may facilitate effective instructional design, promote learner-centered approaches, set clear expectations, and optimize the learning environment.Merdeka Curriculum has changed how teachers prepare the lessons. Abstract

Building arguments for academic writing, such as constructing justification for a research proposal, is regarded a complex task. Moreover, it is believed that male and female authors use and produce the language differently, including perhaps providing thesis and arguments for research. Extensive research on rhetorical analysis of students’ theses has been widely conducted; however, little we know the way they state their claims from gender perspectives. To fill the void, this study aims to explore how Indonesian male and female authors construct and state their arguments in Introduction section for justifying their research from the perspectives of argumentation ability, underpinned by the concepts of transitivity system of SFL approach. Informed by qualitative descriptive research paradigm particularly text analysis, ten Introduction sections from selected English thesis proposals written by male and female authors at a university in Banten Province, Indonesia were subject to analyze. The finding of the research shows that either male students or female students expressed their arguments of their research topic and justification in almost similar fashion. The most frequent processes over the clauses were material process, relational process (attributive and identifying), and mental process (male: 59%, 20%, 11%; female: 49%, 20%, 14%). These findings underscore the common strategies employed by students, regardless of gender, in establishing their research objectives and setting the stage for their academic work. Such insights can be of significance for educators and researchers aiming to guide students in optimizing their academic writing skills, particularly in crafting compelling Introduction sections for thesis proposals.

Abstract

Vocabulary is a fundamental component of language expression, alongside speech and grammar. Effective communication in a second language (L2) requires a broad vocabulary, irrespective of students' proficiency in grammar and pronunciation. Preliminary observations at AKM Islamic Senior High School revealed many students have low vocabulary proficiency. Morphology, the study of word formation, includes affixation—adding or removing prefixes and suffixes. Morphological awareness, the ability to recognize and manipulate affixes, helps students deduce the meanings of unfamiliar words, thereby enriching their vocabulary. This study investigates the effectiveness of morphological awareness instruction in enhancing vocabulary among senior high school students. Using a true experimental design with a quantitative approach, participants were randomly selected by Mrs. F, an English teacher, and divided into experimental and control groups, each with 30 tenth-grade students. The experimental group received morphological instruction over three weeks, while the control group received traditional instruction using descriptive text material. Post-tests were administered to both groups, and data were analyzed using SPSS.25. The findings show a significant improvement in the experimental group's vocabulary proficiency, with an average post-test score of 68.40 compared to the control group's 53.80. An independent t-test confirmed a significant difference between the two groups. These results indicate that morphological awareness instruction is effective in improving the English vocabulary skills of senior high school students at AKM Islamic Senior High School.

Abstract

The objective of the study are to investigate the negotiation style uses by Man and Women and the gender influence on the initiation of negotiation in educational conversation context. The research design used in this study is a qualitative descriptive research design. The researchers used the purposive sampling technique to select participants. Participant of this research were an 11 male students and 11 female students of English students of UKI Toraja. The instrument used are observation and interview. This study used the interactive model to analyze data. Data analysis techniques are carried out interactively and take place continuously until complete until the data is saturated. This study confirms that: 1) both male and female participants exhibit a prevalent utilization of the 'compete' negotiation style when initiating conversations within diverse social contexts. Specifically, this negotiation style encompasses proactive engagement in discussions for the explicit purpose of seeking information pertinent to the context. Notably, a higher proclivity for information-seeking through competing behavior is observed among female participants, while male participants tend to engage in conversations without introducing novel topics, emphasizing the nature of their engagement as oriented toward interaction rather than information acquisition. 2) The Influence of Gender Initiation within the Educational Conversation Context, Particularly in the Realms of Attaining Research Information: A Scholarly Exploration and Fostering Collaborative Engagement for Assignment Completion among Peers.

Abstract

Reflective thinking is an important factor that can affect a teacher's effectiveness when teaching in the educational setting. This study aims to investigate the relationship between reflective thinking of EFL teachers in Indonesia and their teaching styles. A descriptive-correlational design was employed in the quantitative research method, and a survey with fifteen EFL teachers from different Indonesian schools was used to collect data. With a correlation of 0.757 and a significance value (sig) of 0.0010.05, the statistical analysis's results demonstrated a strong positive or close to significant relationship between teachers' reflective thinking levels and their teaching styles. Additionally, the percentage of 53.3% indicates that EFL teachers in Indonesia tend to use the "All-round flexible, Adaptable teacher" teaching style when teaching students in English in the classroom. This finding illustrates that Indonesian EFL teachers who exhibit high levels of reflective thinking tend to have more effective teaching styles. Suggestions for future research include in-depth research to understand specific aspects of reflective thinking as it relates to teaching styles.

Abstract

Language is a powerful tool for expressing identity, navigating relationships, and addressing cultural complexities, particularly in literary works that explore intricate social dynamics. This study investigates the interplay between language, cultural context, and communication within Amy Tan’s The Bonesetter’s Daughter, emphasizing how speech acts reflect and navigate complex social relationships. Through a socio-pragmatic framework, the research examines dialogues and interactions in the novel to identify illocutionary speech acts and their socio-cultural implications. Utilizing text and content analysis methods, data were collected using the AntConc tool to identify keywords associated with various speech acts, followed by a detailed analysis of the characters' utterances. The findings reveal 499 instances of illocutionary speech acts, categorized into assertive, directive, expressive, commissive, and declarative types as outlined by Searle’s theory. These acts illustrate the characters' efforts to navigate cultural conflicts, identity struggles, and generational tensions, particularly within the mother-daughter dynamic between Ruth and LuLing. The study underscores the role of language in mediating relationships, resolving conflicts, and expressing cultural identity. By providing insights into how speech acts operate within specific social and cultural contexts, this research contributes to the fields of sociolinguistics and literary studies. It highlights the practical application of socio-pragmatic analysis in understanding the relationship between language, culture, and identity in literature.

Abstract

Learning to read is not merely a classroom requirement; it is a skill that empowers individuals, enabling them to navigate the complexities of the world and fostering a lifelong love for learning. The objectives of this research are formulated to investigate the English teacher of perception about cooperative learning. The study employed a case study research approach. A case study is a method used to gain a comprehensive comprehension of a subject or event in an authentic environment. The result study shows that The effectiveness of a teaching method is contingent upon various factors, including the specific context, learning objectives, and the preferences of both teachers and students. While cooperative learning has demonstrated efficacy in numerous scenarios, it is recognized that alternative methods may also be suitable depending on the unique needs and characteristics of the class. This highlights the value of educators being open to exploring and adapting different instructional strategies to best meet the requirements of their students.

Abstract

The objective of the study was to determine the efficacy of the POSSE (Predict, Organize, Search, Summarize, and Evaluate) Strategy in enhancing students' reading comprehension. This study was carried out at the SMP Negeri 1 Toribulu. The research population comprised 66 eighth-grade students. The research used quantitative research, particularly in Quasi-Experimental Design. To get the sample, the researcher employed cluster random sampling. The data was collected using exam items, which included 10 multiple-choice and 5 essay questions. There were pretest and posttest in both groups, and the experimental group received treatment while the control group did not. The results showed the students' mean score of the experimental group (55.64) on the posttest was higher than the score from the control group (31.24) on the posttest. The sig value is calculated using statistical results. With a 2 tailed of 0.0000.05, it can be determined that there is a significant difference in the mean score of pupils' learning outcomes between the POSSE-based learning model and the usual method taught by the teacher.
