Abstract

This research reviews the child protection paradigm in the Indo-Pacific region, especially in Indonesia, by highlighting the imbalance between the status of developed countries and the need to develop thinking and implementation of Islamic law. The research results show that understanding of Islamic law regarding child protection is in line with human rights principles and the Child Protection Law. Factors influencing child trafficking involve the social and economic conditions of countries, while movements, interactions, and changes in child trafficking systems reflect the complexity of this problem. Child protection agencies highlight the mode of child trafficking through online channels and loose borders, with the main obstacles being differences in levels of understanding and lack of coordination between countries. Parents emphasized education, the role of the community in prevention, personal experiences related to concerns about children's safety, and participation in children's education. Parents' hopes include strengthening legal and policy frameworks involving cultural values and Islamic law, as well as community support for more effective prevention efforts. In conclusion, this research provides critical insight into the role of Islamic law and cooperation between government and society in protecting children from trafficking in the Indo-Pacific region.

To fill the literature gap, this article aims to describe prosocial behaviors performed by volunteers involved in addressing the Semeru volcano eruption victims in Lumajang Indonesia occurred in 2021. It was a result of descriptive quantitative research involving 202 participants who identified themselves as Muhammadiyah’s volunteers involved in the humanitarian activities in addressing the natural disaster. The data collection of pro-sociality utilized a prosocial behaviors scale including five aspects: honesty, helping, cooperating, caring, and donating. The validity test of the items used corrected item-total correlation that resulted in 34 valid items, and it had a good reliability based on Cronbach’s coefficient alpha test which was 0,953. The result shows that the participants had predominantly at the moderate level of prosocial behaviors which was four-fifths of the participants. Only a small proportion placed at the high pro-sociality, likewise those who were at the low level meaning these two categories were not significant. This finding is expected to enrich literature related to the role of civil society in responding to disasters, especially at the individual level. However, some relevant topics such as relating prosocial acts to other variables need to get attention for future research to result in comprehensive empirical evidence on this issue.

Abstract

Dutch colonialism from 1860 to 1935 witnessed a prevalent phenomenon of indigenous women in the Dutch East Indies entering into concubinage arrangements with European men, often assuming the position of “nyai” (mistresses) due to various socioeconomic factors. This study explores whether this situation was universal among indigenous women by examining the case of Robinah, who achieved an esteemed status during this era. Utilizing feminist theory and historical research methodologies, the investigation analyzes primary and secondary sources related to the Regentschap Bondowoso region in East Java. The research reveals that Robinah, a woman of Madurese descent, became the legitimate wife of Dutch investor George Birnie, diverging from the typical concubinage model. Robinah's intellectual acumen and communicative prowess were crucial in expanding Birnie's tobacco plantation enterprise, facilitating labor acquisition and land management within the predominantly Madurese local community. This case exemplifies how certain relationships between Dutch men and indigenous women could transcend the conventional concubinage paradigm, resulting in more egalitarian partnerships and enhanced social standing for the indigenous women involved. The study contributes to the scholarly discourse on the intricate dynamics of cross-cultural relationships and female agency within colonial contexts. Navigating mixed marriages can be challenging due to family resistance and social pressures, which can hinder the couple's integration into each other's groups. Sociological research examining power dynamics and identity in these unions is crucial for understanding their impact on social change and harmony and overcoming these obstacles.

Abstract

The communication system in pesantren tends to be figurative. Kyai and his family often use figurative patterns to convey criticism and praise to Santri. This study describes the form, type, and function of criticism and praise of kyai and his family to santri. The theory used to explore criticism and praise is a descriptive and socio-pragmatic theory with the ethnographic method of communication. This research is qualitative. The method used in data collection is the participant observation method. The researchers observed conversations between kyai and their families with the santri, especially those involving criticism and praise. We conducted interviews with koai, pesantren families, and santri equipped with recording and note-taking techniques. The collected data was then reduced and classified based on categories. Subsequently, we transcribed the data in orthographic form and translated it into Indonesian. The results showed that there were two categories of speech in the pesantren environment, namely criticism, and praise; (1) The form of criticism of kyai and his family to santri are reprimands, command, satire, advice, and praise; (2) The forms of praise are motivation, praise, and reprimand. In the motivation and praise, speakers always use subtle, figurative, and direct sentences, while in the reprimand, speakers always praise the interlocutor by criticizing a third person.

Abstract

Tandha’ is a local art in Madura, not least in the Sumenep district, which was once used as a medium for da'wah, so there are many Islamic values in it. However, over time, the Islamic value is replaced by the materialistic value in the practice of tandha' itself, so much so that its existence even causes controversy in the community. This shift has also changed the characteristics of tandha' as a local art in Sumenep. This study aims to look at tandha’ in its original form, which is full of Islamic values and is very distinctive, and how the shift occurred and what aspects have changed in tandha.' Looking at all of this, we may find a middle ground for the controversy over tandha' itself in the community. As a local art form, it must be preserved and kept pure. This research attempts to answer this question using a descriptive qualitative method with data from field studies and previous research literature studies. The results of this research find a shift in tandha’ occurred since the space for tandha’ began to expand from the palace to the lives of the general public and also cannot be separated from the dark history of tandha’, which later became an economic support so that the underlying Islamic value changed to materialistic values and it also slowly changed the composition in tandha’ itself to threaten Islamic values and threaten Madurese art in it. Therefore, instead of arguing pros and cons, the government, artists, and religionists should start working together to restore tandha’ to its authenticity.
