Abstract

Solar Cell Research Group, which is under Advanced Materials Research Group, Department of Physics, Faculty of Science and Data Analytics, ITS Surabaya, with its competency and research, tries to be actively involved in contributing and providing alternative solutions to problems in society, especially regarding the problem of global warming and energy crisis. One of the concrete actions is through community education activities to increase understanding and awareness of the use of environmentally friendly photovoltaic technology on Gili Ketapang Island, Probolinggo. This island is one of the most populous small islands in Indonesia with the problem of ‘high-cost electricity from the state electricity company. The training materials provided for this activity include the Qur’an and Science, global warming, energy crisis, and renewable energy, and the use of photovoltaic energy technology. Thus, the understanding, awareness, and independence of the community of Gili Ketapang Island in the electricity sector can be improved by utilizing renewable energy sources, especially photovoltaic technology. In the long term, the role of various renewable energies in the future is expected to be more significant on this island by utilizing this abundant solar energy

Abstract

Self-medication practice in the community tends to increase. One of the factors that influence this trend is the variation of non-prescription drugs and advertisements. Although in self-medication people are allowed to determine their own medication, but it has the potential to create problems. Sungai Ambawang Sub-district is one of the trans Kalimantan; accordingly the medicine products from outside West Kalimantan can be transported through this area. This community service activity (PKM) aimed to increase knowledge and encourage positive attitudes, so that their behavior of self-medication becomes appropriate. This PKM was carried out by the method of communitybased interactive approach (CBIA) in 2 steps. This activity involved 66 community health center cadres. The participants’ knowledge and attitude were measured twice (pretest and posttest) through questionnaires, then analyzed descriptively and statistically using the Wilcoxon test. The observations showed that most of the participants had bought medicines without a prescription for self-medication (78.7%), obtained the medicine from pharmacies (65.2%), purchased medicines over the counter (45.4%), and frequently used analgesic-antipyretics (77%). The results of the Wilcoxon test showed that there were significant differences between knowledge and attitudes before and after CBIA intervention. Based on the results of this intervention, it was concluded that the CBIA intervention done as the PKM activity could increase knowledge and encourage positive attitudes regarding appropriate self-medication practices.

Abstract

This paper evaluates planners’ capacity to influence the plan-making process where it often involves actors and institutions with various interests. Relegating planners’ roles by providing mere technical inputs to those who seek advice would not alleviate spatial imbalance and unequal power structure embedded in the community. Planners should be reflexive and accountable, as it will lead them to aspire to a contested ideal rather than to simply optimize the current system in which they are in. Drawing from our experience in reviewing regional spatial plan of Kabupaten Mappi, providing an alternative approach to current development strategies would help balancing the local community’s power structure. Planners should master the politics of planning as it would help them influence the decision-making process.

Abstract

The role of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) as a driving force for the nation's economy has weakened when faced with the COVID-19 pandemic. It is estimated that 50 percent of the total business operators in micro and small businesses went bankrupt during the pandemic. A community service program is needed to encourage MSMEs to survive and develop at this time. No exception, MSME players in Magelang City who are engaged in tofu production in Trunan Village are facing a decrease in production scale due to COVID-19 and need assistance through community service activities. This service activity was carried out with a blended approach between offline and online to reduce the risk of the COVID-19 transmission but still be productive during the pandemic. Field identification was carried out as an initial step to find out the problems faced by tofu producers. The problem faced by tofu producer in Trunan Village is the low innovation of tofu products and the weak use of business information systems, which results in weakening tofu production. The low level of tofu product innovation causes the final product to be marketed only in conventional markets and does not have a target end-consumer. The sales information system was implemented to encourage the sale of tofu and derivative products to the public with a wider market reach. The implementation of this service refers to the two problems faced by MSME players by determining the main achievements in the form of MSME innovation strategies during the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract

Introduction: Diarrhea is still a leading cause of death in the world in children, especially in children under 5 years. Diarrhea is a contagious disease with relatively high morbidity and mortality rates. Rotavirus is a cause of diarrhea in children and is a very important public health problem in both developed and developing countries. Parents' knowledge is one of the causes of diarrhea due to parents' ignorance of the causes of diarrhea, how diarrhea is transmitted and how to prevent diarrhea. Methods: This explanatory mixed qantitative-qualitative method with a quasi experimental design study to determine the effect of interactive discussion on changes in knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions towards the prevention and management of childhood diarrhea among mothers and children living in the area of The Ash-Shiddiqiyah Orphanage located in Central Sremo, Hargowilis, Kokap, Kulon Progo Regency, Yogyakarta. Results: The activities were conducted on November 29th, 2020 with 67 participants consisting of 54 children and 13 mothers from the area. The questionnaire results showed that the posttest scores in all sections (knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions) were significantly higher compared to the the pretest scores. There were increment of 1.33 points in knowledge (p<0.001), 0.5 points in attitudes (p<0.001),  0.4 points in perception (p<0.05), and 0.76 points in overall scores (p<0.001). Interviewees agreed that the intervention has been properly conducted with clear delivery, easy to understand for both adults and children, and ability to two-way communication. Technology utilization might help the understanding of the audience. Besides, a small group discussion in the session may benefit the participants to ask more confidently compared to asking in the middle of large group due to shame. Conclusion: Interactive discussion could be used to improve knowledge, atittude and perception towards childhood diarrhea. The delivery of interactive discussion using simple language for targetted population, adoption of small group discussion and technology utilization might help the effectiveness of the intervention. Further study is needed to identify effective ways to promote the childhood diarrhea management and prevention in community.
