Abstract

Background: The increase in sexual violence cases in Indonesia has prompted filmmakers to explore similar themes in their works. Unlike conventional films that explicitly depict rape as a manifestation of sexual violence, “Photocopier” (2021) takes a unique approach by portraying it through symbolic and metaphorical means, making it more challenging for audiences to comprehend. Purpose: This study aims to examine how “Photocopier” (2021) visualizes various forms of sexual violence in selected scenes. Methods: A qualitative approach was employed for this research. The analysis focused on acts of sexual violence depicted in several scenes of the film “Photocopier,” utilizing Andrew Burn’s theory of multimodal discourse analysis, specifically the kineikonic mode. This mode classifies the sign systems within motion media or film into three categories: embodied mode, visual mode, and auditory mode. Results: “Photocopier” (2021) illustrates sexual violence through a variety of forms, including sexual harassment, sexual exploitation, sexual intimidation, and sexual control. Implicit depictions of sexual harassment are seen, for instance, through the victim’s clothing being worn inside out. Sexual exploitation is portrayed through the sale of personal data and photographs of victims for financial gain, driven by the perpetrator’s sexual desires. Additionally, forms of intimidation and sexual control are demonstrated through the judgment imposed on victims of sexual violence who are unaware of their situation and the forcible collection of evidence with sexual undertones. Implications: This study underscores the importance of raising public awareness about the diverse manifestations of sexual violence, particularly those depicted in films, thus enhancing understanding and vigilance towards such issues.

Abstract

Background: Wadon Ora Didol is a documentary film highlighting women’s resistance to the problem of early marriage. The rise of early marriage in Indramayu is a serious problem regarding the exploitation and objectification of women. This is actually related to the traditions and culture of Indramayu, thus, it is giving rise to a feminist-based resistance movement against these traditions. Purpose: This article aims to analyze and describe the resistance carried out by women against early-age marriage in the film Wadon Ora Didol through critical discourse analysis of Sara Mills. Methods: It uses a descriptive research approach, with primary data collection through documentation on selected scenes and relevant literature studies. Data findings were analyzed using theories of resistance and feminism. Results: There is women’s resistance in the film Wadon Ora Didol, which is identified through two positions: first, as the subject of resistance displayed by demonstrators and their efforts to revise laws of marriage; second, a slight object position through scenes showing the exploitation and objectification of women. Dominantly, Wadon Ora Didol proves that women are the main actors who are constructed to be able to fight, be independent, and be free to express and convey criticism of the problem of early-age marriage. This film also presents women who are responsive to caring about the fate of other women, both domestically and publicly, so that all individuals are equal and have their rights to freedom. Implications: These findings provide social criticism of the importance of women’s rights in society, as well as their struggle for existence in feminism. It is hoped that the results can provide other aspects to increase public awareness to be more responsive to social problems and exploitation of women, especially regarding early marriage.

Abstract

Background: Competition between traditional media and social media in reaching the attention of the audience has become a necessity. The presence of social media has changed the pattern of media use in society in seeking entertainment and information. To anticipate these changes, television must converge with social media. Convergence is believed not only to be able to maintain the existence of television but also to increase the number of audiences. Purpose: This study aims to identify and explain the management problem in the process of convergence between social media and television at the IVM (Indosiar Visual Mandiri) television editorial team. Methods: This study uses a qualitative approach and a single case study method. The object of the research is the convergence process between social media and television at the IVM television editorial team; the research subjects are informants consisting of the editor-in-chief, news production manager, reporters, and social media managers. The convergence analysis used in this paper was the journalistic convergence model from Pavlik, which looks at the convergence model in newsrooms, newsgathering, and news content. Results: This study indicates that the convergence of social media and television at the IVM television editorial team does not occur in the newsroom model and only occurs not routinely in the news gathering model and content model. However, in order to converge with social media, television broadcasting encountered problems from the management side (organizational structure, work system, and technology infrastructure). Implications: The convergence of newsrooms between television and social media at IVM can be said to have failed due to the non-integration of social media management with IVM editorial staff. Due to the absence of an integrated social media team within the editorial team, there is a lack of handling of interactivity between social media followers and IVM editors.

Abstract

Background: In the last ten years, the Indonesian film industry has experienced significant growth. The national film industry and the regional film industry, one of which is indie films produced in the city of Makassar. The development of films in Makassar began to receive national public attention with the explosion of the film Uang Panai in 2016. Also, in 2017, the success of the movie Silariang received an audience of 183.340 people. Purpose: Examining the impact of Makassar-produced films on the dynamics of Indonesia's domestic film industry is the main objective of this study, including examining its impact on cultural identity, economic variables, and its role in enhancing the uniqueness of national film. Methods: This study employs a qualitative methodology and gathers data through content analysis, observation, and interviews. Results: According to the study's findings, regional films—like those made in Makassar—are essential to the growth and advancement of the country's film industry. This demonstrates how crucial it is to acknowledge and encourage filmmaking outside of the major industrial hubs. Conclusion: Research shows that regional films have the potential to positively impact economic growth, especially in the regions where they are produced. It encourages the creative economy, creates local employment opportunities, and offers direct and indirect financial benefits. Implications: There is a need to recognize and promote regional films to encourage the diversity of Indonesian films; this study is also expected to provide a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between regional films and the dynamics of Indonesian films.

Abstract

Background: Revival Rival shares videos through the YouTube channel “Asian Survival.” The video is about the situation in the latest transmigrant location in Tanjung Buka Settlement Unit (SP) 10, Tanjung Palas Tengah District, Bulungan Regency, North Kalimantan. He practiced citizen journalism by raising topics that were not touched by the mainstream mass media. Purpose: This research aims to discover how Asian Survivor conducts advocacy through its citizen journalism video content. Methods: This is descriptive research using several data collection techniques, namely content analysis, interviews, and literature studies. Results: The Asian Survivor advocacy is carried out through the production of video content consisting of four topics, namely, donation distribution, human interest, actual information, and inspiring profile. In addition, Revival Rival manages donations from viewers touched by the news shared by maintaining accountability through a personalized reporting process. Conclusion: Asian Survivor is an advocacy media for new transmigrants in Tanjung Buka SP 10 through a variety of video content presented as a picture of the life struggles of new transmigrants in marginalized areas; social criticism presented implicitly to maintain media sustainability and to raise donations from netizens sent to help the lives of transmigrants. Raising netizen donations for charitable activities is a form of social media monetization. Implications: This research has implications for further research on the power of utilizing YouTube channels as advocacy media based on citizen journalism. Another research development is related to the ethical issues of raising donations made by YouTube content as another form of monetization of social media accounts.

Abstract

Background: The representation of female ex-convicts, particularly in Indonesia, remains biased despite the increasing number of ex-convict narratives. This study focuses on addressing this gap by examining the TV series “Dapur Napi” on Vidio, exploring how the series illustrates power disparities in the reintegration of female ex-convicts into society and how the series uses hyperbolic dramatization of female ex-convicts for entertainment purposes. Purpose: This research aims to critically analyze how societal power discrepancies are represented in the media and how media constructs the identity and reality of female ex-convicts in “Dapur Napi” through the lens of standpoint theory. Methods: Employing Critical Discourse Analysis by Norman Fairclough, this research dissects the textual, discursive practice, and sociocultural practice dimensions of the TV series using a qualitative approach. Results: The study’s results reveal the portrayal of female ex-convicts, emphasizing complexities in identity construction, societal rejection, and the dual role of media in both entertainment and norm reinforcement. Implications: This research can further develop the discussion on Standpoint Theory, particularly providing insights into inequalities in the representation of marginalized female ex-convicts in popular media. Practically, this research can advocate for more accurate and diverse portrayals, and promote media literacy to challenge stereotypes and promote social inclusion.

Abstract

Background: Local television has an important role in displaying local culture and identity. This role is becoming crucial amidst the dominance of Jakarta’s national television, which not only broadcasts certain cultures and groups but also tends to be biased. Purpose: This study was conducted to explain how locality is used as a means of negotiation and resistance of local television against the domination of national television. Method: This research was conducted using qualitative methods by taking local television, RBTV, part of the national television network Kompas TV, as a case. Data was collected with in-depth interviews, observations, and documents. Result: This research shows that although local television has limited broadcast time (5 hours), it creatively uses locality to negotiate and resist the domination of national television. RBTV uses three tactics to bargain its position with Kompas TV. First, they negotiate the presenter’s standard. For instance, RBTV welcomes presenters who speak at standard speed but does not accept people with oriental faces and Jakarta accents. Second, they broadcast local communities to increase engagement with the audience. Third, they broadcast local culture, such as tradition, customs, food, and fashion. Conclusion: RBTV makes the most of its time to serve and show the local community. Something that Jakarta national television cannot do well. Implications: Local television has become an “arena” for cultural battles and acts as an actor. The thesis of imperialism and cultural domination in the context of RBTV fails. This research suggests the importance of studies with a local perspective so that the dialogue between local, national and global cultures can be investigated.

Abstract

Background: Raya and the Last Dragon is the first Disney movie inspired by traditional Southeast Asian cultures, somewhat under-represented in mainstream media. Hence, the movie is worth further investigation. Purpose: The study intends to read Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon using a deconstructionist lens. Methods: The study used qualitative analysis of audio-visual materials. The auditory and visual aspects of the movie are examined using a deconstructionist lens by watching and rewatching the movie with occasional note-taking. Data are presented in the forms of characters’ dialogues, and screen captures of relevant scenes. Results: It found that, to a certain extent, the movie deconstructs dominant narratives. The most prosperous tribe, Heart’s chief, chooses to promote trust and cooperation over violence. Then, against popular views associating toddlers with innocence, this movie presents a toddler as a con baby. It also seems to advocate the power of youngsters to make a difference in society. Though it seems to have feminist details through its two androgynous female warriors, Raya and Namaari, the same characters lead Kumandra to its downfall and eventual rise. It suggested that female warriors can achieve great things but also bring catastrophes. The movie, furthermore, portrays Sisu as an insecure yet trusting dragon, quite different from the typical portrayals of dragons often associated with power and destruction. However, the movie marginalizes the antagonists, the Druun, by not giving them the language to defend themselves from the judgmental assumptions of the talking characters. Implications: The movie carries hidden messages and could be used to challenge dominant narratives. It, however, could also be used to marginalize certain groups.

Abstract

Background: Kung Fu Panda 3 is an animated film from the United States that collaborated with a Chinese company. The film tells the story of Po's journey in handling his identity crisis as the main antagonist threatens the village's peace. Addressing social issues such as identity crisis, this animated film, a combination of action and comedy genres, is considered interesting to research as the presence of identity crisis issues is relatively unnoticed among people of different ages. Purpose: This research aims to provide the process of Po's character in handling their identity crisis throughout the story of Kung Fu Panda 3. Methods: This research uses a qualitative research method using narrative analysis by Tzvetan Todorov, which is supported by the approach of Lacey and Gillespie. Results: This research’s findings depict the process of Po's character in resolving its identity crisis whilst overcoming the menace from the villain, which is analyzed according to the five stages of narrative structure in Tzvetan Todorov's narrative analysis method with the approach of Lacey and Gillespie. Scenes are classified into five stages: equilibrium, disruption, recognition of disruption, attempt to repair disruption, and reinstatement of equilibrium. Conclusion: This research concludes with an overall representation of how the character Po can overcome their identity crisis through the five stages and suggests a utilitarian application of a thorough narrative analysis from a communication perspective. Implications: This research can theoretically serve as to how identity crises arise and are resolved in people with the role of other individuals around them in communications. Directors and scriptwriters, especially those producing animated films, can use this research to communicate issues on mental health in a way that people can perceive easily and have fun.
