Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of garlic extract administration on the profile of erythrocytes average number in mice infected with Trypanosoma evansi. T. evansi was isolated from surra cases in Buntok, South Kalimantan in 2019, and garlic was extracted by maceration method. The samples of this research used 30 male mice from the Deutch Democratic Yokohama strain with 25-30 grams body weight and grouped into 6 treatments. Each treatment consisted of 5 mice, 4 groups of it which were infected with T. evansi injected by intraperitoneal route. The results of the erythrocyte's average number showed the group of mice without treatment (K0) was 8.92±0.41 x106/?l at the beginning and 8.31±0.63 x106/?l at the end of the study. In the group of mice infected with T. evansi without treatment (K1) the average number of erythrocytes before infection was 8.20±1.01 x106/?l and 6.35±3.91 x106/?l after infection. The average number of erythrocytes in the group of mice infected with T. evansi and administered trypanosidal (K2) before infection was 8.44±1.27 x106/?l and 7.02±2.78 x106/?l after infected. The treatment of the mice group with garlic extract doses, 50 mg/kg BW (K3), 100 mg/kg BW (K4), 200 mg/kg BW (K5), before infected with T. evansi, the erythrocytes average number was 7.92±0.54 x106/?l, 7.88±0.09 x106/?l, 8.41±0.93 x106/?l, and 7.34±4.35 x106/?l, 5.85±1.53 x106/?l, 6.79±1.18 x106/?l after infected. Based on the results, concluded that there was no significant difference in the administration of garlic extract with the profile of erythrocytes average number in mice infected with T. evansi. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct further studies and research on other parameters such as the form of cell morphometric measurements and the average number of other cells such as leukocytes and platelets.

Abstract

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is the ability of bacteria to withstand the effects of drugs so that bacteria do not die after the administration of antimicrobials and the function of the drug does not work at all. This incident is caused by the uncontrolled use of antimicrobials which can cause a global crisis on human and animal health in the future. This study aims to determine the factors that influence the behavior and perceptions of veterinarians in the province of Bali on the use of antimicrobials and antimicrobial resistance. A total of 204 veterinarians were used as research samples through a survey using a Likert system and then the results of differences in veterinary responses to the frequency of prescribing were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis. The results showed that antimicrobials were given to half of the patients treated weekly, and the factors that influenced the administration of antimicrobials were the history of antimicrobial use, level of safety, experience, potency, side effects, and the risk of increasing antimicrobial resistance. The cost of culture testing and the price of antimicrobials are the biggest barriers for small animal veterinarians but not for livestock veterinarians. All respondents acknowledged that most sources of information on AMR were easy to obtain and useful for them. The group of veterinarians who practice small animals and livestock practitioners agree that AMR is a serious common threat in the future. This study provides important insights into the application of veterinary medical procedures in the province of Bali and will later become a reference in increasing regulation control over the use of antimicrobials.

Abstract

Kintamani dogs are native dogs of Indonesia which have been registered with the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) as medium-sized dogs. This study aims to determine the morphometric differences of male and female Kintamani Bali Dog (AKB) in the development phase that is maintained in Bangli Regency and Denpasar Municipality. A total of 32 Kintamani Bali Dogs (AKB), consisting of 8 male AKB from Bangli, 8 female AKB from Bangli, 8 male AKB from Denpasar, and 8 female AKB from Denpasar, were used in this study to determine the forefoot and hind limb morphometry in developmental phase (6-18 months). The variables measured were hind limb height (TB), upper hind limb length (HF), lower hind limb length (TP), hind limb length (QH), hind limb height (HR), upper hind limb length (RC), lower front foot length (FF), front toe length (QF). The data obtained were analyzed by variant analysis using SPSS version 25. The results showed that the HR, RC, QF and HF were significantly different (P<0.05) between male AKB maintained in Bangli Regency and Denpasar Municipality; while the height of the TB was significantly different (P>0.05) between female AKB maintained in Bangli Regency and the Municipality of Denpasar. This study shows that the feed and the way of maintenance is very influential on the growth of male and female AKB with different topography, cage modification can be done to equalize the conditions in the place of origin so as to minimize temperature differences that can result in differences in metabolic functions that affect the growth rate.

Abstract

Newcastle Disease is one of the major infectious diseases that often attacks broiler farms. The objective of the study was to find out the number of Newcastle Disease antibody titers of broiler vaccinated at the age of a day in nursery and given booster in 15 days. The research sample was 20 broiler DOC divided into 2 groups and each group contained of 10 DOC. The control group (P0) was unvaccinated DOC of broiler and the group (P1) was vaccinated DOC of broiler at the age of a day in nursery and given booster in 15 days age. Blood samplings were conducted on the 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th days in each group. Newcastle Disease antibody titer examination was done using Haemaglutination Inhibition. The antibody titer value was then analyzed using variance (Anova) and regression test. The results showed that booster vaccination performed at 15 days of age showed a protective antibody titer at 21 days of age, namely 5.8 HI log 2 (? 4 HI log 2) and increased up to 28 days of age, namely 6.5 HI log 2 (? 4 HI log 2). The conclusion of this study is that the Newcastle Disease broiler antibody titer increased after booster vaccination was performed at 15 days of age. Suggestions need to be given a booster vaccination in broilers vaccinated at day one.

Abstract

Haemonchus contortus is a highly pathogenic worm in sheep and goats. A study was conducted to determine the in situ percentage of the development of H. contortus worm eggs at the first-stage larvae (L1) in water. This research treatment was repeated 5 times in one group with a duration of 10 days and each group used 8 female H. contortus worms. These worm eggs are counted using the McMaster method. The prepared worm samples were ground, immersed in 5 mL of pro-injection aqua (pH 7.0), and filtered using a tea filter. Research procedure: 1.5 mL of suspension was collected, placed into a tube and treated according to the procedure. Each tube, covered with aluminium foil that has holes 15 to 20, was placed on pasture for 48 h (05:00 – 24:00); where ambient temperature was recorded every four hour. Research variable include: percentage of hatched worm eggs in the immersion group. The hatchability percentage = ((the difference between numbers of worm eggs before and after treatment): (those before treatment) x 100)). Data were tabulated and analysed descriptively. The results showed that: the percentage of the total average development of the L1 H. contortus worm eggs was 26.5%. Conclusion: the percentage of egg development of H. contortus in situ was 26.5%. The influencing factors are ambient temperature, pH, humidity, culture media, and egg abnormalities. It is recommended to extend the breeding time in the media in the hope that the percentage yield is more optimal.

Abstract

Canine parvovirus (CPV) disease is a highly contagious disease in dogs, spread by the fecal-oral or oronasal route. This virus has a tropism in cells that are active and rapidly dividing. The animal used as the case study is a three months old local mixed breed male puppy from Denpasar, Bali. The case puppy was found to be sick for four days. Clinical examination showed the puppy had anorexia, depression, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, cough, fever, and dehydration. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay showed the puppy was positive for CPV infection. The results of the routine hematological examination showed that the CPV-infected puppy had normochromic normocytic anemia, leukocytopenia, monocytosis, and neutropenia. The gross pathological changes observed were cerebral meninges hyperemia, lung hyperemia, epicardium necrosis, liver congestion, renal medulla hyperemia, and small intestine hyperemia. Histopathologically the changes observed were necrotizing myocarditis, emphysematous bronchopneumonia, hemorrhagic and necrotizing hepatitis, splenic lymphoid follicle depletion, renal glomerular atrophy, hemorrhagic and necrotizing enteritis, and hydropic degeneration of the urinary bladder transitional epithelium. Based on clinical symptoms, hematological examination, gross pathology, histopathology, as well as isolation and identification of the virus, it can be concluded that the puppy was infected with enteritis and myocarditis CPV concurrently.

Abstract

Since 2015 imports of frozen buffalo meat from India have begun to enter Indonesia, especially in West Nusa Tenggara, as an effort to meet market needs in modern shopping areas in Lombok City. The price of frozen buffalo meat is relatively cheap, causing marketing to expand to the East Lombok area, especially the Aikmel traditional market, which is about 72 km away. This study aims to determine the presence of bacterial contamination of Salmonella spp. on frozen packaged buffalo meat from India sold at Aikmel Market. The research sample was buffalo meat from 10 sellers, each weighing 100 grams. Then isolation and identification were carried out. Bacterial isolation was carried out using selective media, namely Xylose Lysine Deoxycholate, Gram staining, Biochemical Test which included Triple Sugar Iron Agar, Indole, Methyl Red, Voges Proskauer, Citrate and Urease tests. The results showed that samples of frozen buffalo meat marketed in the Aikmel market 9 samples of 10 samples of buffalo meat (90%) showed contamination of Salmonella spp. Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to increase local government supervision of the procedures for selling frozen buffalo meat from India.
