Abstract

This study aims to identify errors that are often made by 5th semester English language students in completing tree diagram assignments, especially in analyzing sentence structures in the Syntax course. The method used in this study is a descriptive qualitative approach, with data analysis techniques in the form of content analysis of 22 students who were divided into 10 groups to work on the task of making tree diagrams from English news texts from various sources. Based on the analysis, several types of main errors were found, namely errors in identifying word categories (168 words), incorrect node labeling (42 node labeling), and incorrect application of phrase structures (11 phrase structures). In addition, students also have difficulty in understanding the hierarchical relationship between syntactic elements, such as the correct placement of determiners and auxiliary verbs. These errors are often caused by a lack of understanding of basic word categories and the underlying syntactic rules. This study reveals that making tree diagrams requires a deep understanding not only of syntactic theory, but also its practical application in everyday sentence analysis. Errors in node labeling and errors in syntactic category identification indicate the need for a more contextual and deeper understanding-based learning approach.

Abstract

The main factor causing inequality for women is patriarchy. As in many old-school traditions, patriarchy remains in marriage where wives are urged to bow down to their husbands and the husband is regarded as the ultimate authority of the household. This research investigates the narrative of Charlotte Perkins Gilman's iconic short story, "The Yellow Wallpaper". Descriptive qualitative research and textual analysis approach are used to complete this research analysis. Along with the depiction of radical feminism, this research aims to subvert patriarchal ideals. This is in keeping with the narrator’s husband John, who works as a physician, forbids her to do anything instead locking her in the ancestral halls. The reason of his attitude as if this is the only way to cure the female narrator’s depressing nervous trouble. She is often considered let the silly fancies run in her mind and lost control. In the nursery room she is locked up, she found an irritating painting on the yellow wallpaper. Yet, she later discovered there is a woman imprisoned in the painting who is always creeping. The findings show that the yellow wallpaper symbolizes the female narrator’s suffering as a captivated creature and pushed by the patriarchy control.

Abstract

This study delves into the efficacy of microteaching as a pedagogical tool for enhancing reflective practices among pre-service teachers. Employing a case study approach, the research investigates the experiences and reflections of a cohort of pre-service teachers who participated in microteaching practice over a specified period. The study aims to discern the direct influence of microteaching on the development of reflective practices and explore the underlying mechanisms through which this impact occurs. This research elucidates the nuanced relationship between microteaching and reflective practices through qualitative data analysis gathered from participant reflections and interviews. Pre-service teachers' written reflections and open-ended interviews are used to collect data on their reflective teaching. The reflective journal records students' experiences during microteaching practice, while interviews provide insights into their reflective practices and their approaches to their professional growth. The findings of this study show that reflecting on teaching practices can influence the improvement of pre-service teachers' instructional strategies. This research highlights the importance of instructional strategies in implementing learning innovations. Indicators of instructional strategies were found: teaching plans and approaches, goals and objectives, teaching experiences, methods and strategies, memorable classroom events, and barriers and solutions.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to determine if Project-Based Learning (PjBL) can improve the speaking ability of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Palu. This research applied a quasi-experimental design. The samples consisted of students from class VIII B as the experimental group and class VIII D as the control group, selected through purposive sampling from a population of 349 students across 11 classes. Data were collected from test results (pre-test and post-test) and analyzed statistically. The pre-test score for the experimental class was 36.25, while the post-test score was 70.12, indicating a significant improvement in speaking skills due to the treatment. Additionally, it was found that the class became more engaging and encouraged students' creativity. Hence, teaching using PjBL effectively improves the speaking skills of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Palu. The findings of this research suggest that integrating Project-Based Learning (PjBL) into the classroom not only enhances students' speaking abilities but also creates a more engaging and stimulating environment, thereby fostering student creativity and motivation.

The data were statistically analyzed using the t-counted formula with degrees of freedom (df) = Nx + Ny - 2 = 28 +28 - 2 = 54. The analysis results show that the t-counted value is 2.358 while the t-table value is 1.674. It means that the t-counted is higher than the t-table. It can be interpreted that the hypothesis was accepted. Therefore, pictionary game can improve vocabulary of the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Sigi. Abstract

Corrective feedback is used as a basis for improvement. Giving corrective feedback plays an important role to encourage students to improve their speaking skills and make them aware of their speaking error. Thus, this qualitative study applied case study approach to explore the types of oral corrective feedback used by lecturers in correcting students’ speaking error in Oracy Class at One Public University in Jambi and their reasons for choosing certain types of oral corrective feedback. The participants of this research were three lecturers who teach Oracy Class. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews and observations with the guidance of interview protocol and observation checklist as the instruments. In this study, it was found that lecturers used oral corrective feedback by giving reformulation through explicit correction and recast and giving prompt through clarification request, metalinguistic feedback, and repetition. Then, their reasons for using certain types of oral corrective feedback were because they were considering the students’ level and skills and preparing the students for global competition. Furthermore, it can be concluded that the lecturers only applied five types of oral corrective feedback proposed by Lyster and Ranta (1997) such as explicit correction, recast, clarification request, metalinguistic feedback and repetition.
