Abstract

This study aims to generate theoretical ideas about religious practices within the tradition of local wisdom. The fact that the Malay Batubara community continues to perform a healing ritual known as ubat-ubat serves as the foundation of this research. In addition to Islam, elements of Hinduism and Buddhism can also be found in these healing rituals, reflecting a form of religious syncretism. The purpose of this study is to explain why the community continues to practice this ritual from the perspective of Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 165. A qualitative method involving observation and interviews was used to collect data. The findings indicate that the Malay Batubara community performs the ubat-ubat ritual to avoid misfortune and express gratitude to the Creator, who has provided sustenance to His servants through objects and nature. Whether conducted individually or collectively, this ritual reflects the love for Allah, as stated in Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 165, which serves as the foundation for strengthening the devotion of believers. The author hopes that this religious tradition does not become mystical or negatively impact the community in the future, whether in terms of education, economy, or religion, despite this ceremony being held annually.

Abstract

This article explores communication strategies based on symbolic interactionism theory in the context of Islamic values education, particularly in facing the challenges of modernisation and globalisation. In Islamic education, communication plays an important role as a means of conveying and internalising values that shape the character, ethics, and worldview of students. Using a literature review approach, this study analyses how symbolic interactionism, which focuses on meaning-making through social interaction, can be applied to develop effective educational communication strategies. The findings indicate that interpersonal communication, group discussions, and the use of digital media are the main strategies that align with the symbolic interactionism framework. This approach enables educators to connect meaningfully with students, taking into account their social backgrounds and individual identities. By emphasising symbols, shared meanings, and personal involvement, Islamic educators can foster a deeper understanding and stronger commitment to Islamic values. This approach not only supports character development but also prepares students to navigate the global world without losing their religious identity. This study underscores the importance of adaptive and value-based communication strategies in enhancing the relevance and impact of Islamic education in the contemporary era.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the symbolic meaning and differences in the implementation of the Toron Tana tradition in Madurese society, especially in Bangkalan, by highlighting the differences between the priyayi and ordinary people. The scope of the study includes the symbolic aspects of rituals, the social structure of the tradition actors, and the function of tradition in maintaining the identity and social cohesion of the community. The method used in this study is a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data were obtained through interviews with local people, as well as literature studies of relevant references. Data analysis used Émile Durkheim's structural functionalism perspective to understand the social function of the Toron Tana tradition in the context of Madurese society. The results of the study show that although there are differences in the form and excitement of the implementation between the priyayi and ordinary people, the core meaning of the tradition is maintained. This tradition functions as a medium for transmitting cultural and spiritual values, strengthening social solidarity, and reproducing social structures continuously. The conclusion of this study confirms that the Toron Tana tradition is not only a cultural heritage, but also an important instrument in maintaining social integration and the collective identity of the Madurese community amidst the dynamics of changing times.
