Abstract

Islamic populism in Indonesia is perceived as an alliance of the people on behalf of the ummah in urban areas, against the ruling elites who enjoy the promises of peace and prosperity more than capitalism, modernism and democracy. This paper though intends to disclose the Islamic populism in rural areas through the power of capital and symbols as part of the cultural heterogenity between alliances in rural areas and large cities that simply focuses on political power. This research embraces the socio-cultural approach by applying the theory of generative structuralism penned by Pierre Bourdieu in order to analyze the resistance of cultural heterogenity by invigorating the cultural reproduction and symbols dominance to thwart the ummah alliance in urban areas. The results of this research show that the Islamic populism in rural areas upholds the belief in salvation, peace and unity, by reinforcing the cultural heterogenity among the congregations on various bases. In spite of domestication process in Islamic populism by the ruling elite, the ummah alliance in rural areas cannot be triggered due to their firm belief in salvation, which differs from the Islamic populism in large cities where a symbol of injustice of the bourgeoisie and the ruling elites prevails. The Islamic populism in rural areas has caused the failure of Islamic populism in large cities since their main discourse solely considers the middle class, in contrast to the Islamic populism in rural areas that might may welcome both the middle class and the lower class.

Abstract

The issues raised in this article are women and infertility in the context of Christian theology. Interpretation of biblical texts and Christian traditions has led to injustice and discrimination, especially for women. Therefore, constructive and contextual theology is needed to realize liberating understandings for women and men. The goal to be achieved is to offer contextual biblical theology so that the meeting between culture and biblical texts produces a spirit of equality, a spirit that liberates and upholds human values. Using the synthesis model, this article shows that a reinterpretation of the texts of the Scriptures is necessary. Reinterpretation includes the nature and purpose of marriage, the role and position of women, and the theological meaning behind the story of infertility in the Scriptures. The purpose of marriage must be understood in the maturity of faith that each husband and wife are called to enjoy exclusive togetherness in the context of a covenant with God as the initiator. The Bible shows that from the very beginning, God created humans, men, and women in His image. This indicates that men and women have an equal position even though they have differences. Meanwhile, barrenness becomes rhetoric that lifts stories from women in ancient times to emphasize that God is the owner of the womb, and He has the power to control who, when, and how pregnancy occurs.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the worship pattern of religious people widely. Religious practices conducted regularly and carried out in special places have shifted. Communal worship practices that involve many worshippers are limited at home and involve limited people. This article aims to explain the form of a strategy of Muslims and Christians in carrying out their worship routines during the covid-19 pandemic. The data used as the basis for analysis are obtained through observations, interviews, and literature studies. This article shows that the change in the pattern of worship is the result of a state of emergency and the choice to continue to carry out obligations as a devoutly religious person. The limitations of the prayer room are circumvented by adjusting it to government policies. Policies on social distancing and compliance with health protocols are efforts to prevent the spread of the virus. In a religious context, it is part of an effort to save lives that must be obeyed. This article is still limited to discussions about changing the pattern of worship practices in two religious groups so it still needs further studies that also look at practices for adherents of other religions.

Abstract

Electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) communication from tourists that have visited a destination can be used as promotional media for that destination, including in the halal tourism context. Understanding the drivers of Muslim tourist’s eWOM is necessary to be able to use eWOM as a means of promoting halal tourism in Indonesia. This research aims to analyze the direct effects of Islamic religiosity, perceived values, and destination satisfaction on eWOM; the mediating effects of destination satisfaction on the link between Islamic religiosity, perceived value, and eWOM; the serial mediating effect of perceived Islamic values and destination satisfaction on the link between Islamic religiosity and eWOM; and comparing the effects of perceived value dimensions, i.e., quality, price, emotional, social, different experience, novelty, safety, location, physical attributes, and nonphysical attributes, on eWOM. This research used the positivism paradigm and quantitative method. The population was Indonesian Muslim tourists who have visited halal tourism destination in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. Purposive and snowball sampling methods were used to select samples. The data were collected from 332 respondents via an online survey and analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) method. This research found that only perceived social value that has a significant effect on eWOM, while Islamic religiosity, the other dimensions of perceived value, and destination satisfaction are not the direct and indirect drivers of eWOM. The difference in the significance of the effects of those factors can be associated with the origin and age of the respondents, as well as the location of the destination.

Abstract

Reader Response Criticism (RRC) is a postmodern hermeneutic approach that emphasizes meaning lies not in the hands of the writer or text but the reader's hands. With this method, the approach to obtaining meaning depends very much on the reader's experience and the extent to which he places himself in the text. The problem is when this approach used for hermeneutical scriptures, and some new meanings emerge that even outperform mainstream textual meanings. This paper contains a discussion of the RRC approach and its use in analyzing the scriptures. The narrative used is the portion of the exodus of the children of Israel from Egypt, where Elohim dropped ten plagues upon Egypt. New meaning instruments produced with this approach, such as plagues, are not merely miracle stories but products of natural phenomena. Likewise, the act of God in the plagues can be understood as an act of anger and discrimination. It can conclude that as a critical approach, the RRC method could not be entirely applied to hermeneutical scriptures because there are parts of the scriptures that must be preserved literally as part of the truth of the faith of believers. While on the other hand, the RRC is open to multiple meanings, which contradict the literal meaning in the text and context.
