Abstract

This study aims to describe the profile of students' critical thinking in solving analytical geometry problems that are viewed from gender. This research is a qualitative study with case studies. Data analysis technique used are Miles and Huberman analysis, namely data reduction, data presentation, and presented conclusions. The results of this study are male students and female students who have met the standard eight intellectual critical thinking standards of analytical geometry, namely clarity, precision, accuracy, relevance, consistency, logical correctness, completeness, and fairness. On the intellectual standard of precision, male students were more careful in giving reasons for taking problem solving strategies to female students. At the intellectual standard of fairness, male students are able to provide two alternative solutions to problems, while female students only provide one initial solution to problem solving.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to review students’ error in calculating the definite integral of trigonometric functions using Solo Taxonomy. This research is descriptive qualitative research. The results of the study show that the most errors done by the students are at the multi-structural level caused by the addition errors and the lack of subjects’ accuracy. Errors at the pre-structural level are the errors done by the subjectswho do not understand the purpose of the problems given. At the uni-structural level, the subjects make mistakes by applying the concept from the beginning of the problem. At the relational level, the subject uses a concept that is not common to solve problems but it has passed through several steps of completion. The results of this study can be a reference to anticipate and reduce students’ errors in calculating the definite integral of trigonometric functions.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the improvement of students' mathematical concepts understanding through the application of Guided, Explained, Collaborated and Evoked (GECE) Learning Strategy. The GECE Learning Strategy originates from the integration of the Auditory Intellectually Repetition (AIR) learning model and Guided Discovery learning model. The quasi-experimental with nonequivalent control group design was employed in this study. The instruments used were a test in the form of a description based on real-world concepts and a questionnaire to determine students' responses in the process of learning mathematics. Based on the results of hypothesis testing using the Mann-Whitney test, it was obtained that p kurang dari α (0.001 kurang dari 0.005) which shows that the application of the GECE learning model affects students' mathematical concept understanding with n-gain of 0.62 (medium category). The effectiveness of the learning model applied was measured using Cohen's formula and a value of 1.88 (high category) was obtained. The results were also supported by positive students' responses of 3.45 which means that the integration of the Auditory Intellectually Repetition (AIR) learning model and Guided Discovery learning model could effectively improve students' mathematical concepts understanding.

Abstract

The phenomenon of boarding school has evolved since the 1990s. In addition to having advantages, the school also has barriers in the learning process. Therefore, the need to explore some information directly related to the reasons why boarding school is developed, students’ life in school together and the learning process that occurred. The research method is used  a qualitative approach. Schools in this study are limited to Islamic boarding schools at junior high school level in grade VII. The research procedure is undertaken to find the phenomenon of research subjects that occurred at boarding schools. The validity of data in this research uses source and method triangulation techniques, namely by checking phenomena obtained from observations, interviews with parents, interviews with students, interviews with teachers, and interviews with teachers dormitories. The general conclusion regarding Islamic-based boarding schools is that the school has become the choice of parents in educating their children to gain abilities in the religious and academic fields. In mathematics learning, the teachers prefer direct approach learning rather than indirect learning, and also most of them do not use a lesson plan as teaching guides. Therefore, the school must be able to choose and apply a learning approach oriented to the conditions of diversity that occur in boarding schools so that students have no difficulty in receiving the subject matter.

Abstract

The aims of this study are to (1) determine the level of mathematics anxiety (MA) of pre-service elementary school teachers, (2) compare the MA among pre-service elementary school teachers in terms of gender, and (3) compare the MA among pre-service elementary school teachers in terms of the semester. This research employed a quantitative approach with comparative research design. In addition, the samples were 498 pre-service elementary school teachers. The instrument used is the Revised-Mathematics Anxiety Survey (R-MANX) developed by Bursal and Paznokas (2006). R-MANX consists of 30 statement of a 5-point Likert scale. The data analysis was processed using one-way ANOVA assisted by SPSS version 23. The findings reveal that the MA of pre-service elementary school teachers is high. Further, it is revealed that there is no significant MA difference between male and female pre-service elementary school teachers. Also, there is no significance of MA difference among pre-service elementary school teachers who are in 2nd semester, 4th semester, and 6th semester. Therefore, the results of this research imply that MA can affect pedagogical competence of a teacher and it could have an impact on the way the teacher manages the class.
