Abstract

This research aims at identifying the cultural terms in the bilingual text Mati “Salah Pati” and its translation “The Wrong Kind of Death”. Futhermore this research also discusses about componential analysis of Balinese cultural term and its translation to English from foreign point of view. The componential refers to the description of the meaning of words through structured sets of semantic features, which are given as “present (+)”, “absent (-)” or “indifferent with reference to feature (+/-)”. This research used descriptive qualitative method since the objectiveness of this research is closely related to identifying and describing the result of the analysis. The data source of this research was taken from a bilingual short story entitled Mati “Salah Pati”, written by Gde Aryantha Soethama and its translation entitled “The Wrong Kind of Death” translated By Jennifer Lindsay. The result of the analysis shows that componential analysis in translation is the basic comparison of a source language word with a target language word which has a similar meaning, but not an obvious one-to-one equivalent, by demonstrating first their common and then their differing sense components. From the four basic types of semantic features, there are two types of semantic features can be found in this study, those are object element and event element. Componential analysis also shows that no word has the exactly same feature and same meaning, it is depend on the culture of the community

Abstract

Nowadays, translation becomes more essential in people’s everyday communication. This is due to people’s mobility in and out from one country into another. This also happens in Indonesia where people from all over the world come to Indonesia not only for travelling but also for other purposes such as investing, working, studying as well as retiring. Thus, the translations of Law in Indonesian Immigration should be taken into account so that the regulation is easily understood and read by those people. The selected data taken from two translation versions of Undang-UndangNomor 6 Tahun 2011 tentangKeimigrasianwere analyzed based on the theory of textual equivalence proposed by Allan (1986), supported by Newmark’s Componential Analysis Theory (1988). The result showed that some translations of the Indonesian Immigration Terms into English in both versions are commonly used in the Immigration section such as sponsor, permanent resident permit, Immigration Clearance etc. Some are not common in daily use such as guarantor, temporary resident permit, etc. The translation equivalents were found using componential analysis. However, in some cases, componential analysis theory is insufficient to describe the words in both versions. Therefore, meaning postulate is also applied

Abstract

The objective of this study was to discover the shift occurring in the text analysis in the level of word and phrase. The analysis was limited to the shift in the level of noun or the noun phrase utilized in the Source Language which is translated into the Target Language. The data were collected from the Balinese story I BelogKelangan as the source text and its English translation I Belog Lost Something as the target text compiled by I Gusti Made Sutjaja (2010).The data were elaborated on the analysis by Qualitative method and presented in the form of words and sentences based on the application of shift theory Vinay-Darlbenet (in Venuti, 2000). The result of this study showed that there were two types of shift applied to the text. They are grammatical structure shift called Transposition and point of view shift known as Modulation. There were two types of shift grammatical structure; Unit Shift and Category Shift. The data were merely showing the low to high units of translation such as from word into phrase and from the phrase into clause. Meanwhile, the category shift the only occurred in different word class from noun to verb. The shifts in point of view resulted in Lexical Dense where the implicit lexical was transferred explicitly, in contrast the explicit item was transferred implicitly referred to Lexical Loose. In addition, there was also the stress on the role of character. Shift cannot be avoided in translation because it involves two different languages which are different in linguistically and culturally. This research was expected to have contributions for future study on translation shift in Balinese text
