Abstract

Indonesian people who can speak Japanese language often mix elements of Japanese language when communicating with the people of Indonesia who is also able to speak Japanese languange either directly or on social networks like facebook. This linguistic phenomenon peeled sociolinguistic theory based on the concept of code mixing. The primary data source is utterances which was updated status and comments of Indonesian people that contain code mixing on facebook. The secondary data were obtained from the online interviews with several informants who their updated status or comments of facebook were used for the primary data source.The results of the data analysis showed that the type of code mixing of the Indonesian on facebook in terms of element uptake language used is outer code mixing, while in terms of system -level linguistic device are clauses code mixing, phrases code mixing, and words code mixing. The factors that influence the event of code mixing are (1) speaker wants to practice Japanese language that they learned; (2) there are some elements of Japanese language that can not be interpreted 100% to Indonesian language; (3) speaker is one community with the patner; (4) can provoke the patner to use Japaese language; (6) to be more cool (7) the things that was communicated was related to the Japan.

Abstract

The journal aimed at finding out whether the use of presentation, practice, and production method could improve the writing skill of descriptive essay. The data were collected by observation and documentation methods by giving assignments, questionnaires, interviews, direct record and student’s descriptive essay. The data were analyzed by descriptive qualitative method. The data were presented in the table, as well as in description sentences. The main theory used in this research is the theory of learning and teaching from Doughlas Brown. The supporting theories were taken by Jeremy Harmer entitled The Practice of English Language and Teaching and English grammar theory by Yule. The results of quantitative analysis showed that the use of PPP (presentation, practice, and production) method could improve the writing skill of the students. It could be seen from the result of the students’ achievement test and observation analysis which improve continuously during the aplication of the model. The mean score of the students was 61.33, which was categorized intofair level. After having treatment in the first cycle, the students’ mean inprove to 76.67 categorized into good level, the second cycle, the students’ mean score improve to 81categorized to good level. This improvement was also supported by the qualitative data. The result of the qualitative analysis showed that the use of PPP (presentation, practice and production) method could improve the learning motivation of the students. It could be seen from the result of questionnaire analysis and interview showed that from 18 students, 65% of students admitted that they could easy to understand about the lesson after applying PPP (presentation, practice and production).

Abstract

Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan interaksi antara fungsi gramatikal oblik dengan fungsi pragmatik topik. Fungsi gramatikal oblik meliputi obliklokasi, oblikinstrumen, oblikkomitatif, oblikgoal/sasaran, obliksumber, oblikagen, dan oblikpenerima. Fungsi oblik yang berinteraksi dengan topik memunculkan oblik topik. Fungsi oblik yang semuanya dimarkahi oleh posposisi  akan mengalami penambahan pemarkah topik wa apabila konstituen yang menempati posisi oblik tersebut berfungsi juga sebagai topik kalimat. Teori yang dipergunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah teori mengenai fungsi gramatikal dan fungsi pragmatik dalam Tata Bahasa Leksikal Fungsional. Metode penelitian yang dipergunakan dalam tesis ini secara umum adalah metode kualitatif. Metode simak dipergunakan sebagai metode untuk pengumpulan data. Untuk menganalisis data dipergunakan metode agih, sedangkan untuk penyajian hasil analisis dipergunakan metode formal dan informal.

Abstract

Politeness in expression according to Brown and Levinson (1978/1987); Leech (1983); and Ide (1989) is very important to notice in social life in order to avoid conflict which may occur in communication. Yet, politeness is applied differently in different culture because each utterance cannot be apart from its context (Leech, 1983).The goal of this study is to examine the politeness strategies in text that implemented in Complaint Letters which is published in “Harian Fajar” daily.Functional Analysis with focus on Field, Tenor, and Mode of Text is used to analyze the data. The analysis shows that power, distance and deference influence the text and strategy choices. The strategic choices indicate there is a distance in communication between interlocutors.

Abstract

Gending Sang Hyang Jaran merupakan lagu yang mengiringi Tari Sang Hyang Jaran. Pemujaan di dalam Gending Sang Hyang Jaran menarik untuk diteliti, karena berkaitan dengan ritual penolak bala yang dilakukan oleh masyarakat Banjar Bun. Tulisan ini menggunakan teori fungsi milik Bascom untuk mengungkapkan fungsi pemujaan dan teori semiotika Barthes untuk mengungkapkan makna pemujaan. Fungsi pemujaan dalam gending terdiri atas fungsi religi, fungsi estetika, fungsi pendidikan, fungsi sosial, dan fungsi penetralisasi. Makna diungkapkan melalui konotasi yang ada di dalam gending. Konotasi mengacu kepada makna harmoni, yang berkaitan dengan konsep Tri Hita Karana di dalam ajaran Agama Hindu.

Abstract

Artikel ini berjudul “Keterampilan Menulis Wacana Argumentasi Berbahasa Inggris dengan Metode ESA pada Mahasiswa Level Post Intermediate di STIE Triatma Mulya”. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui (1) kemampuan menulis wacana argumentasi pada mahasiswa STIE Triatma Mulya dan (2) faktor-faktor penghambat mahasiswa dalam menulis wacana argumentasi. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori pembelajaran dan pengajaran bahasa yang dikemukakan oleh Brown (2007) sebagai teori utama. Data-data dalam penelitian ini dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan metode observasi, wawancara, dokumentasi, dan tes. Teknik yang digunakan, yaitu check list, catat, rekam, dan tes tulis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menulis wacana argumentasi mengalami peningkatan sebesar 4,14 %. Aspek-aspek yang mengalami peningkatan dalam tulisan mahasiswa adalah alat-alat kohesi gramatikal, ketepatan kata, dan mekanik. Namun, kategori tata bahasa masih memerlukan perhatian lebih banyak. Hal ini ditunjukkan oleh penurunan kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menggunakan tata bahasa sebesar 0,34 %. Faktor-faktor yang menghambat mahasiswa dalam menulis wacana argumentasi adalah jenis tulisan itu sendiri, tata bahasa, dan pilihan kata.

Abstract

ABSTRACTS The study aims at describing the quality aspects of Indonesian-English translation made by English department students of higher institutions in Makassar. The population of this research is English Department students of higher learning institutions in Makassar. The target population subjects were all students majoring in English in both state and institutions in Makassar totaling about 3750. While the accessible population subjects only the students who went to the five selected institutions, namely UNHAS, UNM, UMI, UNISMUH, and ABA ATMAJAYA, about 2646. This research applied two-staged sampling procedure by combining purposive and random sampling method. Purposive sampling was used to determine the higher learning institutions and semester of the students, the criteria for this was the well established higher learning institutions of both non-education and education based and the fifth semester up or the students who had completed at least 80 credits (sks) and had attended translation class at least Translation I or Theory of Translation Class. The number of students meeting the requirements out of the 2646 was about 897. This was randomly sampled. The sample size was based on Morgan table. The result of the study shows that the quality of the students’ translations, therefore, was very poor; the average grade was only 0.65 on (0-4) grading scale. All aspects (accuracy, clarity, and naturalness) were poor and varied by institutions, by status of institutions, and by semester: The translation among higher learning institutions were UNM 0.96, UNHAS 0,84, ABA ATMAJAYA 0.69, UMI 0.58, and UNISMUH 0.20, the state 0.92 and the non-state 0.46, semester V 0.46 and semester VII 0.89. This implies that different education and different experience the students got from their institutions will differentiate the quality of their translations. This is supported by the facts that the grades of certain institutions were higher than that of the other, the grades of state institutions were higher than that of the non-state institutions, the grades of the higher semester was better than that of the lower semester and, it is interesting to highlight here that ABA ATMAJAYA has the highest translation quality among the non-state higher institutions involved in this study, why? The answer to this question will vary according to the objective conditions in each higher learning institutions.

Abstract

This paper explores the renditions produced by the interpreters in sermon interpreting at ROCK Church Denpasar Bali. It aims at finding out and investigating the categories and the motives of the renditions produced by the interpreters in the setting under investigated. The method adopted for this study is a descriptive qualitative approach. The data of this study is based on six transcribed audio-video recordings of interpreter-mediated sermons on Sunday services, involving six visiting preachers, congregation, and three interpreters. The sermons are preached in English and interpreted short-consecutively into Indonesian. The data were collected through observation method which was applied at once with the implementation of note-taking technique, and were analyzed using the qualitative method and comparative technique. As a theoretical framework, the taxonomy of renditions proposed by Wadensjö (1998) has been utilized. The result of the study shows that there were eight categories of rendition produced by the interpreters in sermon interpreting on Sunday services at ROCK church Denpasar Bali. The categories of rendition produced by the interpreters were close renditions, expanded renditions, reduced renditions, substituted renditions, summarized renditions, two-part renditions, non-renditions, and zero renditions.

Abstract

Politeness is one important aspect in realizing polite speech. Polite speech is the basic matter for providing services to Japanese tourist by workers who working for tourism industry. The focus of this research is to identify and research the Japanese politeness which is used by speakers of Japanese who works in a travel agency in Bali for providing services to Japanese tourists. The methodology used in this research is interview. The informans were seven of guest relations officer (GRO) staff in a travel agency in Bali. This research is examined by using the six principles of politeness based on Leech’s classification (1983). They are 1) tact maxim; 2) generosity maxim; 3) approbation maxim; 4) modesty maxim; 5) agreement maxim; and 6) sympathy maxim.
