Abstract

Social-emotional development in early childhood is crucial for building interpersonal skills and emotional regulation. However, classroom activities often do not provide sufficient opportunities for children to effectively develop social skills. This study aims to explore the impact of outing class activities on the social-emotional development of early childhood children at TK IT Sakinah Sungai Rumbai. A qualitative approach was used with direct observations and interviews with teachers and the principal. The findings show that outing class activities have a positive impact on the development of self-awareness, responsibility, and prosocial behavior in children. Children showed improvement in emotion regulation, conflict resolution, and peer interactions. Although some negative emotions, such as impatience and conflicts, were observed, these activities provided opportunities for children to learn how to manage these challenges. This study recommends that outing class activities be an integral part of early childhood education curricula to support comprehensive social-emotional development.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the impact of implementing the Independent Curriculum based on Project-Based Learning (PjBL) on Arabic reading skills (Maharoh Qirāah) in learning at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri 1 Bandung. This study employs a qualitative approach, collecting data through observations, interviews with Arabic language teachers, student questionnaires, and documentation of learning activities. The results indicate that the implementation of the Independent Curriculum based on PjBL has a positive impact on Maharoh Qirāah learning. The project-based approach has been proven to enhance students' interest and motivation, placing them in the "very good" category. Additionally, the quality of the learning process has significantly improved, accompanied by an increase in students' learning outcomes and competencies, both of which are rated as "very good". These findings were obtained through an analysis of observation data, interviews, and questionnaire results. The interview data with Arabic language teachers was reinforced by questionnaire responses containing 15 statements covering three main components. The implementation of the Independent Curriculum has also facilitated teachers in designing more engaging and interactive learning materials. Ultimately, this study confirms that the integration of Project-Based Learning within the Independent Curriculum framework is not merely a pedagogical alternative but a strategic approach that substantially strengthens the effectiveness of Arabic reading instruction. By simultaneously enhancing student motivation, learning quality, and academic achievement, this model contributes meaningfully to the development of more adaptive, student-centered, and outcome-oriented Arabic language education. These findings therefore offer both theoretical enrichment and practical direction for educators and curriculum developers seeking to elevate the standard of Maharoh Qirāah learning in Islamic secondary education.

Abstract

This research aims to create a problem-based learning model for Islamic Religious Education (PAI) with the goal of enhancing students’ critical thinking abilities. Critical thinking is an essential skill that enables students to successfully address the challenges they encounter in both their personal and social lives in the 21st century. The importance of critical reflection is also emphasized in Islamic teachings, particularly in the Qur'an and Hadith, where numerous passages encourage contemplation (ulul albab). To foster critical thinking, it is essential to implement a learning model that promotes this skill, and problem-based learning (PBL) is identified as an effective approach. This study was conducted across various departments at Medan State University using the Research and Development (R&D) methodology proposed by Borg and Gall. The research gathered data through observations and questionnaires, with the Mann-Whitney U test used for data analysis. The results demonstrate that the problem-based PAI learning model is successful in enhancing students’ critical thinking skills. This conclusion is supported by the Mann-Whitney U test, which showed that the Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) value was below α, leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis and the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis. Therefore, there is a statistically significant difference between the critical thinking abilities of students who participated in the problem-based PAI learning model and those who experienced traditional learning methods.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of using contextual authentic materials in improving vocational high school (SMK) students’ reading comprehension and motivation in learning English reading. The research was conducted among tenth-grade hospitality students at SMK Negeri 2 Polewali during the 2025/2026 academic year. Using a quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group design, 42 students were randomly assigned to experimental (n = 21) and control (n = 21) groups. The experimental group was taught using contextual authentic materials, such as hotel advertisements, reservation forms, tourism brochures, and workplace memos—while the control group received conventional textbook-based instruction over six sessions within five weeks. Data were collected through pretests and posttests consisting of 20 multiple-choice items measuring four sub-skills: identifying main ideas, recognizing supporting details, making inferences, and interpreting references. Statistical analyses using SPSS version 26 included descriptive statistics, assumption testing, and inferential analyses (ANCOVA and independent-samples t-test). The results revealed that the experimental group outperformed the control group significantly, F(1, 39) = 26.48, p < .001, partial η² = .40, with a large effect size (Cohen’s d = 1.62). Students exposed to contextual authentic materials demonstrated greater gains across all sub-skills, with the highest improvement in inference-making. Classroom observations further indicated that these materials enhanced students’ engagement and motivation by linking classroom learning to real-world professional contexts. The findings affirm that contextual authentic materials are effective in fostering both cognitive and affective outcomes in vocational English learning. They enable students to connect language learning with their future careers, promoting meaningful, relevant, and motivated reading comprehension. Consequently, English teachers and curriculum developers in vocational schools are encouraged to integrate authentic vocational texts into instruction to bridge the gap between classroom learning and workplace communication.

Abstract

Problem solving and logical thinking are essential 21st-century skills that are highly relevant to science learning, particularly in biology. The purpose of this study is to present the interaction profile between problem solving and logical thinking in teaching materials for the topic of inheritance of traits in schools. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method with indicator reduction. A total of 66 indicators were developed based on problem-solving aspects—Identify the problem; Define and represent the problem; Explore possible strategies; Act on the strategies; and Look back and evaluate the effects of your activities—and logical-thinking aspects, namely proportional reasoning, controlling variables, probabilistic reasoning, correlational reasoning, and combinatorial reasoning. The findings show that the teaching materials tend to emphasize the IPPR aspect (Identify – Proportional Reasoning) with an average of 4.77%, while the APBR aspect (Act – Probabilistic Reasoning) is less accommodated, with an average of 0.53%. Based on these results, the interaction profile of problem-solving and logical-thinking aspects in inheritance of traits materials in schools is presented unevenly and requires improvement. Therefore, further research is needed to develop and test problem-solving- and logical-thinking-based teaching materials through a classroom experimental approach to measure their impact on student learning outcomes. The findings of this study contribute to the field by providing an empirical basis for curriculum developers, textbook authors, and educators to design teaching materials that integrate higher-order thinking skills more evenly and effectively.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the transformation of traditional Islamic education in Islamic boarding schools through the modernization model applied in Ogan Ilir Regency. The main problem raised is how the concept, characteristics, models, and modernization strategies are applied to Islamic boarding schools that were previously salafiyah and how these Islamic boarding schools respond to the challenges of the times in the field of education. The background of this research is based on the increasingly complex demands of the public on Islamic educational institutions to be able to adapt to the development of science, technology, and socio-cultural dynamics. The method used in this study is qualitative-descriptive with a case study approach. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies of three Islamic boarding schools in Ogan Ilir: Al Ittifaqiah, Albasya, and Darul Funun. The findings of the study show that the modernization of pesantren education in Ogan Ilir includes curriculum reform, the adoption of classical systems, the strengthening of general education, and the use of information and communication technology. The strategy implemented involves integrating relevant old values with new, more adaptive innovations. The hybrid model between salaf and khalaf education is the dominant pattern in this transformation. The conclusion of this study emphasizes that modernization does not eliminate the identity of Islamic boarding schools, but rather strengthens their competitiveness in the midst of social change. Islamic boarding schools are able to become Islamic educational institutions that are responsive, adaptive, and relevant in the modern era.
