Abstract

Competitive fencing is a rapid, open-skill combat sport in which offensive success depends on precise organisation, timing, and adaptability of whole-body movement rather than speed alone. This systematic review synthesised empirical evidence on neuromuscular coordination, movement variability, and motor adaptability during fencing lunges and attacks. The review followed PRISMA 2020 and used PICOS-based eligibility criteria for English-language, peer-reviewed empirical quantitative studies of competitive fencers, including able-bodied and wheelchair fencers, that examined movement, motor control, coordination, or adaptability of the lunge/attack. Searches of Scopus, PubMed, and ScienceDirect identified 712 records published across 2000-2026; 20 studies were included after screening and full-text assessment. Study quality was appraised with the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT) 2018. Because the included studies were heterogeneous in population, weapon, task, measurement, and outcome, findings were synthesised narratively using thematic coding rather than quantitative meta-analysis. Across the corpus, expertise was associated with earlier anticipatory and postural adjustments, more efficient muscular sequencing, greater rear-leg propulsion, and stronger capacity to correct ongoing actions under uncertainty. Movement variability appears functional rather than merely error, but standardised variability metrics are lacking. Future research should prioritise longitudinal and intervention designs, broader para-fencing evidence, and standardised biomechanical reporting.

Abstract

Beach volleyball is a physically and psychologically demanding sport in which performance is produced by two interdependent athletes under variable environmental and competitive demands. This systematic review synthesized empirical evidence on psychological states and processes associated with competitive and technical-tactical performance in beach volleyball. Following PRISMA 2020, Scopus was searched on 21 August 2026 using predefined terms covering psychological states and processes. Of 403 records identified, 15 duplicates were removed, 388 records were screened, 98 reports were assessed in full text, and 22 studies met the eligibility criteria. Eligible studies were peer-reviewed English-language empirical investigations involving beach volleyball athletes, dyads, or teams and examining affect, anxiety, mood, mental fatigue, cognition, decision-making, motivation, coping/resilience, personality, or interpersonal processes. Thematic synthesis identified four broad clusters: affect, anxiety and mood; mental fatigue and cognition; decision-making and psychological momentum; and psychological skills, personality, and interpersonal processes. The evidence suggests that anxiety interpretation and self-confidence may be more informative than anxiety intensity alone, whereas mental fatigue and sleep restriction are consistently associated with poorer attack or perceptual-cognitive performance. Decision-making is influenced by contextual information, prior outcomes, and probability biases, while partnership quality and interpersonal regulation appear relevant to team functioning. However, the evidence base is heterogeneous, frequently cross-sectional, and based on small samples. Findings should therefore be interpreted as associations rather than universal causal effects. Future research should prioritize longitudinal, dyad-sensitive, ecologically valid, and technology-assisted designs with standardized assessment and replication.

Abstract

This systematic review synthesised evidence on the applications, effectiveness, engagement, acceptability, and responsible design of large language model (LLM)- and AI-based conversational agents for mental health and psychological well-being. Following the PRISMA 2020 framework, Scopus, PubMed, and ScienceDirect were searched for English-language publications from 2023 to 2026. The search identified 388 records; 16 duplicates were removed, 372 records were screened, 56 full texts were assessed, and 21 eligible publications were retained. Because the corpus combined randomized and quasi-experimental studies with single-arm, qualitative, developmental, protocol, conceptual, and review publications, findings were synthesised thematically rather than pooled in a meta-analysis. Four themes emerged: effectiveness and outcomes; design and development; assessment and evaluation; and user perception, acceptability, and ethics. Controlled studies reported promising short-term improvements in depression, anxiety, stress, and well-being, while feasibility and qualitative studies indicated generally favourable acceptability but also concerns about engagement decline, privacy, emotional dependence, bias, transparency, and crisis management. The evidence supports conversational AI primarily as a supervised adjunct to mental-health care rather than an autonomous clinical decision-maker. Major limitations were heterogeneous designs and outcomes, limited long-term follow-up, geographic concentration, and incomplete reporting of screening reliability and search dates in the original review record. Future research should use adequately powered, multi-site trials, standardised outcomes, explicit safety benchmarks, and transparent human-oversight procedures.

Abstract

Fencing is an open-skill combat sport in which rapid perception, decision-making, and precise motor execution are performed under intermittent high-intensity demands. Fatigue may therefore affect performance through both neuromuscular and cognitive pathways. This systematic review examined how physical and mental fatigue manifest in competitive fencing, how fatigue influences performance, and which countermeasures have been investigated. Following PRISMA 2020, Scopus, PubMed, and ScienceDirect were searched, yielding 295 records. After removal of 15 duplicates and screening, 44 reports were assessed for eligibility and 14 primary empirical studies were included. The included evidence comprised four randomized studies, six non-randomized quantitative studies, three quantitative descriptive studies, and one qualitative study. MMAT quality scores ranged from 3.5 to 5.0/5.0; 11 studies were rated high and three medium. Because of substantial heterogeneity in study design, fatigue-induction protocols, and outcome measures, findings were synthesized narratively using thematic synthesis rather than meta-analysis. Across the included evidence, simulated or competitive fencing was associated with increasing perceived and/or mental fatigue and with modest neuromuscular fatigability, while reaction time showed the most consistent performance decrement. Higher expertise appeared to buffer movement-precision loss. Nutritional, thermal, and cognitive countermeasures showed preliminary benefits, but objective fencing-performance effects remain uncertain. The evidence supports integrated monitoring of physical and mental fatigue and larger, adequately powered, ecologically valid trials.

Abstract

Beach volleyball is a physically demanding dyadic Olympic sport in which performance depends on interacting physical, technical, perceptual-cognitive, and psychological factors. This systematic review synthesised evidence on visual attention, anticipation, decision-making, cognitive load, and psychological-affective states in beach volleyball. Following PRISMA 2020 guidance, Scopus, PubMed, and ScienceDirect were searched during the review period; the database search reported in the manuscript yielded 982 records, of which 16 duplicates were removed and 966 were screened. Sixty-four reports were sought for full-text assessment, 59 were assessed for eligibility, and 22 studies met the prespecified inclusion criteria and entered the qualitative synthesis. Eligibility was structured using PICOS: beach volleyball participants or expertise comparators; perceptual-cognitive and/or psychological-affective constructs; performance- or expertise-related outcomes; and empirical peer-reviewed designs. Study quality was appraised with a transparent four-domain FICO rubric (Focus, Information, Context, Outcome), with scores of 7–8 classified as high quality and 5–6 as moderate; 19 of 22 studies were rated high quality and the median score was 7/8. The synthesis identified three interconnected themes: action-coupled attention and anticipation, cue- and heuristic-based decision-making under cognitive load, and psychological-affective regulation. Explicit participant samples ranged from 1 to 82 in studies reporting participant counts, while some studies used match-level datasets. Evidence was geographically concentrated: 8 studies were attributed to Germany and 8 to Brazil, with 3 from Estonia, 2 from Switzerland, and 1 from the Netherlands. The heterogeneity of designs and outcomes precluded quantitative meta-analysis. Overall, the evidence supports a cognitive-motor model in which perceptual expertise, decision processes, mental fatigue, and affective states jointly shape performance.

Abstract

Performance in racket sports is shaped by attentional control, perceptual-cognitive processing, emotion regulation, and the availability of cognitive resources. This systematic review examined how attention and perceptual-cognitive processing, emotion and competitive pressure, and cognitive load and mental fatigue relate to performance in tennis and table tennis. Following PRISMA 2020, Scopus, PubMed, and ScienceDirect were searched for peer-reviewed empirical studies published within the 2020–2025 search window. The search identified 283 records; 19 duplicates were removed, 264 records were screened, 58 reports were sought for retrieval, 4 were not retrieved, and 54 were assessed for eligibility. Twenty-nine full-text reports were excluded, leaving 25 studies for qualitative synthesis. Methodological quality was appraised with the MMAT 2018. Because the included evidence differed substantially in study design, constructs, measures, and performance outcomes, no pooled effect size or meta-analysis was conducted; findings were synthesised through deductive thematic analysis. Reviewer-level screening/appraisal decisions were not preserved in the source record in a form that permits valid retrospective calculation of Cohen’s kappa, so no coefficient is imputed. Three themes emerged: attention and perceptual-cognitive processing; emotion, anxiety, and pressure; and cognitive load, mental fatigue, and regulation. Overall, external/holistic attentional strategies, perceptual-cognitive training, and selected self-regulation interventions were associated with improved performance, whereas anxiety, pressure, and mental fatigue were commonly associated with performance decrements.

Abstract

Computer-vision-based markerless pose estimation is increasingly used to quantify sport movement outside laboratory settings, but its validity is not uniform across tasks, joints, anatomical planes, or environmental conditions. This systematic review synthesised peer-reviewed evidence published from 2020 to 2025 using PRISMA 2020 procedures and a PICO-based search across Scopus, PubMed, and ScienceDirect. Eighteen studies met the final eligibility criteria, including 17 empirical studies and one narrative review. A narrative thematic synthesis was combined with methodological appraisal and an operational validity framework linking target variables, reference standards, and intended use. Across validation studies, lower-limb sagittal-plane agreement reached CMC > .90 in the Pose2Sim study, whereas real-competition OpenPose validation reported CMD about .73 for knee-angle waveforms and weaker agreement for hip and ankle measures. A review-level estimate included in the corpus placed markerless sagittal-plane error at approximately 3–15°, with larger errors in the transverse plane. The synthesis therefore supports markerless systems most strongly for spatiotemporal, gross-displacement, and selected sagittal-plane variables when task-specific validation demonstrates small systematic bias. Transverse-plane, rotational, occlusion-prone, and high-speed measures remain conditional and require additional validation. Practitioners should select systems according to the target variable and intended decision, rather than treating markerless capture as a single accuracy class. Future research should standardise validation metrics, report absolute error and bias alongside agreement statistics, and test systems under genuine competition conditions.
