Abstract

English has become the dominant language of communication in sport sciences, yet many students continue to experience difficulties in acquiring specialised vocabulary, technical terminology, and discipline-specific discourse required for academic and professional contexts. Although corpus linguistics offers a robust evidence-based approach for identifying authentic language patterns, its pedagogical application in sport sciences remains fragmented. This systematic literature review synthesises empirical evidence on corpus-based English research relevant to sport sciences education. The review followed the PRISMA 2020 guidelines and searched the Scopus database because of its comprehensive coverage of peer-reviewed interdisciplinary literature in linguistics, education, and sport sciences. A structured Boolean search identified 403 records, of which 18 studies (2015–2025) met the predefined eligibility criteria after duplicate removal, title and abstract screening, and full-text assessment based on the PICOS framework. Two independent reviewers conducted the screening and data extraction process, with disagreements resolved through discussion. Methodological quality was evaluated using the FICO framework, and evidence was synthesised through the thematic synthesis approach proposed by Thomas and Harden (2008). Four overarching themes emerged: (1) specialised vocabulary development and word-list construction, (2) sport terminology and cross-linguistic variation, (3) spoken and instructional discourse in sport contexts, and (4) corpus-informed pedagogical applications. The findings indicate that technical vocabulary and multiword expressions constitute a substantial proportion of sport science discourse, while inconsistencies in terminology across languages continue to challenge instructional standardisation. Nevertheless, most existing studies remain descriptive, with relatively few evaluating instructional effectiveness or learning outcomes. This review provides a comprehensive synthesis of corpus-based evidence and highlights the need for discipline-specific teaching materials, corpus-informed curricula, and intervention studies evaluating pedagogical effectiveness. The findings offer practical guidance for English for Specific Purposes (ESP) curriculum development and establish directions for future corpus-based research in sport sciences education.

Abstract

The quick entry of digital platforms into the sphere of physical activity, fitness and leisure sports has drastically changed how participation is organised, experienced and monetised, but research still stays very much separated among sport management, marketing, information systems, and sport sociology. In order to answer these calls, we did the research by performing a systematic review of literature on platform economy as platform of commercializing sport participation. According to PRISMA 2020 rules, a structured Scopus search was carried out and 1, 418 documents were extracted and limited to years 2021, 2026. After deletion of 12 duplicates, we ended up with 1, 406 documents to be screened, of which 188 were further examined at the full-text stage and ultimately 10 were eligible studies. Eligibility was determined using predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Two independent reviewers conducted study screening and data extraction, with disagreements resolved through discussion (Cohen's κ = 0.88). The included studies were synthesized using the thematic synthesis framework proposed by Thomas and Harden (2008).  Commercialisation mechanisms, value co-creation, and social consequences as the main topics were explored by the means of thematic synthesis and also the combination of descriptive and bibliometric techniques. Four key messages were identified. One, commercialization is largely based on subscription and freemium models that are strengthened through engagement engineering. Second, through data-driven self-tracking and social comparison as well as parasocial relationships, platforms and their communities are made even stronger as values are co-created. Third, although these services are available online and may be free to attend, there is much to be done in that way of leisure space which can be done by surveillance, self-monitoring, and market-directed activities. The last point is that with the change in business models from ownership-centered to service-centered the whole fitness market is being changed. A new model of explaining how sport participation can be mediated through digital platforms has been developed by this review, combining the concept of platform capitalism with service-dominant logic and consumer culture theory. Commercialization studies have been expanded from just the spectator sports, besides this it also suggests some ideas or recommendations to the management, coaches or policymaking authorities and, in doing so, identifies the areas that the longitudinal, critical, and South-related research could target.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the relationship between arm muscle strength and wrist flexibility and the overhand service ability of volleyball athletes at Universitas Negeri Padang (UNP). A quantitative correlational research design was employed. The population consisted of 20 UNP volleyball athletes, with 17 athletes selected as the sample using purposive sampling. Arm muscle strength was measured using a one-minute push-up test, wrist flexibility was assessed with a goniometer, and overhand service ability was evaluated through six service attempts. Data were analyzed using the Pearson Product-Moment correlation and multiple correlation tests with SPSS version 32.0 at a significance level of 0.05. The results revealed that arm muscle strength (r = 0.966; p < 0.05) and wrist flexibility (r = 0.944; p < 0.05) each had a very strong relationship with overhand service ability. Moreover, both variables jointly demonstrated a very strong relationship with overhand service performance.

Abstract

Beach volleyball is contested on deformable sand under variable outdoor conditions, creating movement and load demands that differ from indoor volleyball and may challenge the assumptions of athlete-monitoring technologies. This systematic review mapped technology-based monitoring systems used in beach volleyball and synthesised evidence on their validity, reliability, applications, limitations, and research gaps. The review followed PRISMA 2020 and searched Scopus using a structured Boolean strategy. Of 403 records identified, 54 full texts were assessed and 22 peer-reviewed studies published from 2014 to 2026 were included. Six monitoring modalities were identified: satellite/local positioning systems, wearable inertial measurement units, computer vision, machine-learning analytics, video-based mobile applications, and wearable eye-tracking. Validation evidence was heterogeneous and was reported only where individual studies evaluated measurement properties. In official competition, an inertial device achieved 96.29% overall jump-detection sensitivity, while another IMU study reported jump-count precision of 0.975 and recall of 0.836–1.000 depending on jump type. For the My Jump 2 application, reliability ranged from ICC 0.91–0.97 under controlled sand-box conditions but only ICC 0.447–0.594 in open-field sand conditions. Direct comparison of GNSS and ultra-wideband systems also showed significant differences across kinematic outputs, indicating that their values should not be treated as interchangeable. The evidence therefore supports descriptive profiling and role-specific load monitoring, but not yet universal thresholds, cross-device benchmarking, or injury prediction. Future research should prioritise multi-database evidence retrieval, independent multi-reviewer screening, sex- and action-stratified validation, prospective injury surveillance, and multimodal integration.

Abstract

Floorball is a fast, multidirectional indoor team sport in which performance and injury risk emerge from interacting tactical, biomechanical, neuromuscular, physiological, and monitoring factors. This systematic review synthesised evidence from 2005–2026 across three linked domains: performance determinants, injury risk and prevention, and technologies for monitoring and prediction. PRISMA 2020 guided the review, and Scopus was used as the primary information source because it spans sport science, biomechanics, and engineering literature. The search identified 63 records; 30 full texts were assessed and 10 empirical studies were included: five prospective/longitudinal, three cross-sectional, one observational match-analysis, and one intervention-plus-modelling study. Thematic synthesis identified three evidence clusters. Performance was associated with tactical decision-making, shooting coordination, reactive lower-limb strength, directional-speed symmetry, and load-sensitive psychophysiological state. Injury evidence centred on ACL-related landing and neuromuscular-control factors, but no single screen consistently predicted future injury. Emerging technologies included wearables, velocity-based training, machine learning, and automated tracking, with modest individual-level predictive validity. The review therefore proposes a hypothesis-generating monitoring-informed framework that links performance and injury domains while requiring larger prospective cohorts, external validation, stronger female- and youth-specific evidence, and replication across databases.
