Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease that substantially affects the nutritional status of patients. Family support is believed to contribute to improved nutritional outcomes during the treatment. This study aimed to determine the relationship between family support and improvements in the nutritional status among TB patients with TB. A quantitative study with a cross-sectional design was conducted between May and June 2024, involving 44 patients with TB at the Langkahan Primary Health Center, North Aceh. Data were collected using a validated questionnaire that assessed four dimensions of family support and nutritional status. The Chi-square test was used for data analysis (p < 0.05). A total of 75% of the patients demonstrated improvements in their nutritional status. Overall family support was significantly associated with improved nutritional status (p = 0.013; OR = 7.875; 95% CI: 1.733–35.785), and all support dimensions showed significant relationships (p < 0.05). These findings indicate that family support plays an essential role in enhancing the nutritional status of patients with TB. Strengthening family based interventions is recommended to support nutritional recovery and successful treatment.

Abstract

Stunting is one of the chronic nutritional problems that has serious impacts on children’s growth and development. Preventing stunting requires a multisectoral approach, including nutritional education for parents of toddlers. The butterfly pea flower (Clitoria ternatea) is known to contain antioxidants and active compounds beneficial to health and has potential as a local food alternative for preventing stunting. This study aims to analyze changes in parents’ knowledge levels regarding the benefits of butterfly pea flower after receiving education and to determine the effectiveness of this education in preventing stunting among toddlers in the working area of Kuta Baro Public Health Center, Aceh Besar. The research was conducted in the Kuta Baro Public Health Center area, Aceh Besar Regency, during Posyandu (integrated health post) activities from March to April 2025. The research design used was pre-experimental with a one-group pretest–posttest approach. The sample consisted of 99 parents of stunted toddlers, selected using a total sampling technique. The research instrument was a knowledge questionnaire administered before and after the educational intervention using poster media. Statistical analysis using a paired t-test showed an increase in the average knowledge score from 36.89 to 37.76 with a p-value of 0.040 (<0.05), indicating a significant difference between pretest and posttest results. These findings demonstrate that education about butterfly pea flower significantly improves parents’ knowledge and has potential as an educational intervention for stunting prevention. In conclusion, education on the benefits of butterfly pea flower proved effective in increasing knowledge, which serves as an essential foundation for behavioral change among parents in efforts to prevent stunting. It is recommended that future research explore the direct impact of butterfly pea flower consumption on nutritional status or child growth indicators, not merely on knowledge aspects.

Abstract

School-based nutrition promotion is essential for improving adolescents’ knowledge and attitudes toward healthy eating and government-supported nutrition programs. However, junior high school students have a limited understanding of and less favorable attitudes toward the Free Nutritious Meal Program (MBG). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of a six-week school-based interactive nutrition promotion intervention integrated into the MBG on students’ knowledge and attitudes in West Aceh, Indonesia. A quasi-experimental pretest–posttest design with a control group was conducted among 277 students in grades VII–IX at the State Junior High School 3 Meulaboh. Participants were selected using proportionate stratified random sampling and assigned to the intervention (n = 140) and control (n = 137) groups. The intervention group received structured interactive nutrition education sessions, whereas the control group received only MBG. Knowledge and attitudes were measured using validated questionnaires, before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank and Mann–Whitney U tests. The results showed significant improvements in knowledge and attitude scores in the intervention group compared to the control group (p < 0.001). Integrating interactive nutrition promotion into school meal programs effectively enhances students’ understanding and attitudes, supporting the educational value and sustainability of the MBG.
