Abstract

This research was concerned in creating an English material in oral discourse aspect for the Taxi Drivers. The research conducted based on the problems faced by the taxi drivers in the tourism object which need English as a main language in communicating with the international passenger. The improvement in English skill especially in oral discourse for the taxi drivers was aimed to provide a better service in their job which runs in tourism field. The method used in conducting the research consists of three steps; they are chose the data source, collect the data, and analyse the data. The data was taken by doing the interview and spread the questionnaire to the taxi drivers in Sanur. The material selection was done by selecting the most difficult aspect that the drivers thought in learning English especially in oral discourse aspect. The analysed data provide the basis in creating an English material for the drivers. The theory applied in this research are theory of Hutchinson and Waters in their book entitled English for Specific purpose (1987) as the main theory and the theory of Van Dijk (1993) in his book entitled Principles od Discourse analysis and Searle, J. R. (1696) in her book entitled Speech Acts, an essay in the philosophy of language as supporting theories. As the result, the English materials was created based on Hutchinson and Waters theory which consists of input, content focus, language focus and task. Those model of learning was the most suitable to the taxi driver seen from the layout and also the English material has more specific material organization by applied this model.

Abstract

The website of the travel agency has pictures and texts to promote the services offered. In the text of the tour package offered, some sentences express certain purposes to describe the tour package offered. This article aims to describe the discursive construction of purpose used in the text of the tour package. This research is descriptive qualitative research in which the data source of this research is the tour package texts of ganggabali.com. The kind of data used is sentences found in the tour package texts. The research instrument used is antconc to collect the data. The texts are saved in the *.txt format to make the data collection by using antconc easier. The data that have been collected and classified were analyzed by using the theory of discursive construction of purpose proposed by Leeuwen. The data we analyzed by considering the kinds of the discursive construction of purpose. In this case, the elements that determine the discursive constructions were analyzed first. There were three steps in analyzing the data, namely the analysis of goal orientation, means orientation, and effect orientation in the sentences showing the function of discursive constructions to describe the purpose. The result of this research shows that all the orientations of discursive constructions of purpose were applied in the texts of the travel agency website. Abstract

The title of this paper is Lexical Cohesion Found in CNN International News. In this paper, the discussion is focused on types and kinds of lexical cohesion found in the text, especially in online news. The discussion about (1) the types are used in CNN International news and (2) the mostly types is used in CNN International news. The main theory which is used in this research is taken from the book entitled Cohesion in English by Halliday and Hasan (1976). The data used in this paper was taken from CNN International news (February 2023 to March 2023). CNN International news was chosen because there is some news that uses lexical cohesion, CNN news contains about travel, style, sport, entertainment, world, and politic. The method of collecting the data in this paper is by using a mixed method (combining quantitative and qualitative methods). Based on the data analysis, it was found two types of lexical cohesion namely reiteration and collocation. Reiteration itself consists of four different kinds such as repetition, synonymy or near-synonymy, superordinate, and general word. Also, the second type was found is collocation. All of the types of lexical cohesion right here have their functions.

Abstract

Persuasive communication is an approach that aims to change someone’s point of view, attitude and beliefs. At the time of the Covid-19 pandemic, almost all levels of society experienced the negative impact of the prolonged outbreak and it affected the mentality especially those who lost their jobs. This is also experienced by the community in Kesiman Kertalangu Village so the persuasive communication methods are needed to increase the motivation of the community to become entrepreneurship. This study aims to find out the appropriate persuasive communication method to use and the factor which become a problem in delivering the messages through persuasive communication methods. This study is field research with descriptive qualitative explanation using groups of people in Kesiman Kertalangu Village as purposive sampling. Data were collected through observation, interview and documentation. The theory used is the theory from Keraf, 2010 about various persuasive techniques and speech act theory proposed by Searle (1969). The findings of this study are that the persuasive techniques used consists of five techniques, namely association techniques, reward techniques, integration techniques, red-herring techniques and structuring techniques. The persuasive is expressed in the form of speech acts, namely, assertive speech acts, directive speech acts, commissive speech acts, expressive speech acts and declarative speech acts. The problems faced in delivering the messages through persuasive communication methods are inadequate preparation, differences in social status, differences in interests, and negative prejudice.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan keterampilan berbicara bahasa Inggris siswa SMAN 9 Denpasar dengan mengaplikasikan Artificial Intelligence (AI) untuk mendukung promosi pariwisata budaya Bali. Di era digital saat ini, kemampuan komunikasi bahasa Inggris sangat penting untuk membantu melestarikan warisan budaya lokal dan sekaligus memperkenalkannya kepada khalayak internasional. Namun, banyak siswa mengalami kesulitan dalam kelancaran berbicara, pengucapan, penggunaan kosakata, dan rasa percaya diri saat berbicara dalam bahasa Inggris. Perangkat pembelajaran berbasis AI menyediakan latihan berbicara yang interaktif, umpan balik langsung, koreksi pengucapan, serta kesempatan belajar secara personal sehingga dapat meningkatkan kemampuan komunikasi siswa. Integrasi AI diharapkan dapat menumbuhkan kepercayaan diri, kreativitas, dan literasi digital siswa dalam menghasilkan materi promosi pariwisata yang menarik. Dengan menggabungkan pembelajaran bahasa dan teknologi, siswa dapat mengembangkan keterampilan komunikasi praktis yang relevan dengan konteks pariwisata global. Temuan penelitian diharapkan menunjukkan bahwa pembelajaran berbicara berbasis AI berkontribusi positif terhadap kemampuan bahasa Inggris serta mendukung promosi pariwisata budaya lokal secara lebih inovatif dan mudah diakses.
