Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine a change that occurs in total phenolic content (TPC) and antibacterial activity of ashitaba (Angelica keiskei) after dried using two different methods : sun and oven drying. The effectiveness of the drying methods was evaluated in term of total phenolic content (TPC) by using spectrophotometric assay with Folin-Ciocalteu reagent and antibacterial activity againts Streptococcus mutans by in vitro macrodilution assay. Oven drying at 60oC possessed high TPC (2,98 ± 0,0935 g EAG/100g) compared to sun drying method (1,72 ± 0,0142 g EAG/100g). Simillar pattern was also observed in antibacterial activity. Oven drying have higher antibacterial activity with the MBC (minimal bactericidal concentration) value of 0,5 mg/mL againts Streptococcus mutans. Therefore, sun drying is not suggested for drying method of ashitaba in terms of total phenolic content and antibacterial activity compared with oven drying methods.

Abstract

Excessive sun exposure can reveal harmful effects on the skin. One way to prevent these effects is by using Kepundung (Baccaurea racemosa) a plant known for its antioxidant properties. Several studies have shown that the antioxidant activity of kepundung leaf extract has a very strong IC50 value, making it potentially a sunscreen. However, research on the Sun Protector Factor (SPF) value of kepundung leaf extract has not been reported. Therefore, this study will conduct to determine the SPF value of the extract. Compound extraction will carry out using the sonication method with methanol solvent. The extract obtained was analyzed for SPF value using UV-Vis spectrophotometry and the SPF value will calculated using the Mansur formula. The various concentration of kepundung leaves extract revealed various SPF from minimal and ultra protection. Kepundung leaves extract with concentation 500 ppm have ultra protection with SPF value 15.19. The Kepundung leaves can to be developed as natural SPF.

Abstract

Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammation of the skin’s pilosebaceous unit, caused by oxidative stress due to reactive oxygen species (ROS) release. Oxidative stress conditions can be treated using natural antioxidants, namely ashitaba (Angelica keiskei). In contrast to previous studies that tested column chromatography fraction of the macerated ethanol extract, this study examined the liquid-liquid partition fraction of 80% methanol sonicated extract of Ashitaba herb. This study aims to determine the antiradical activity of various fractions of Ashitaba herb extract against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhidrazyl (DPPH) free radicals. 80% methanol extract of the Ashitaba herb was fractionated using chloroform, ethyl acetate, and water solvents. Each ashitaba herb fraction was identified for the content of flavonoids and phenolic compounds and the antiradical DPPH activity was tested with ascorbic acid standard using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The IC50 value of each fraction was statistically analyzed using One-Way ANOVA and Posthoc Tukey. The results of phytochemical identification showed that ashitaba herb fractions positively contain flavonoids and phenolics. Antiradical activity of the chloroform, ethyl acetate, and water fractions against DPPH was indicated by IC50 values of 164.22±5.68 ppm (moderate); 8.70±0.12 ppm (very strong); and 243.60±8.14 ppm (weak). Statistically, each ashitaba herb fraction differed significantly from ascorbic acid (IC50 2.37±0.05 ppm). The ethyl acetate fraction has the strongest antioxidant activity and is in the same category of antioxidant strength as the ascorbic acid standard.

Abstract

Angelica keiskei has potential as an anti-inflammatory agent because it contains chalcone which has been proven to be able to suppress inflammation through inhibiting nitric oxide production and inhibiting the expression of the iNOS and COX-2. The anti-inflammatory potential of Angelica keiskei needs to be tested. This study aimed to determine the anti-inflammatory activity of Angelica keiskei ethanol extract using the protein denaturation inhibition method. Angelica keiskei was extracted using the sonication method with 96% ethanol. The extract was tested for anti-inflammatory activity using the protein denaturation inhibition method with diclofenac sodium as a positive control. The percent of inflammatory inhibition is used to assess sample activity. The results showed that the percent of inflammatory inhibition of Angelica keiskei ethanol extract increased as the test concentration increased. The maximum percent inhibition was obtained at a concentration of 1.5% with the percent of inflammatory inhibition value of 23.14% ± 0.05. Angelica keiskei ethanol extract has anti-inflammatory activity based on in vitro testing using the protein denaturation inhibition method.

Abstract

The use of synthetic dyes in cosmetics can cause side effects such as allergies. Therefore, the presence of natural dyes such as anthocyanins from berries is a safer alternative for the community. However, the stability of anthocyanins as natural dyes can be affected by pH. The purpose of this study was to determine the optimum concentration of citric acid and tartaric acid in eyeshadow powder preparations as pH stabilizers using the Simplex Lattice Design method. The research method used the sonication method. Then, the formulation results from running SLD were carried out and evaluated for particle size, adhesiveness, and pH. Data analysis used SLD to obtain the optimum formula. Then, the evaluation was carried out as before with additional evaluations of organoleptic tests, homogeneity and polish. Furthermore, the data were verified statistically with a one-sample t-test. The results obtained an extract yield of 22.9% and a positive anthocyanin content. Based on the SLD method, the optimum formula was obtained with a citric acid concentration of 1.49% and a tartaric acid concentration of 0.508%. Verification of the optimum formula showed no significant difference between the experimental response and the predicted response with a pH value of 5.75 ± 0.12; adhesive power of 11.66 ± 1.52%; and particle size of 126.32 ± 2.02 μm. The conclusion is that the optimum formula produces good physical characteristics and the verification results show agreement between the predicted response and the experimental results.

Abstract

Ashitaba herb contains flavonoids, phenolics, tannins, alkaloids, and terpenoids, which are known to have antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. Therefore, ashitaba has the potential to be developed into anti-acne preparations, one of which is cream. Creams have various advantages, namely the ability to deliver hydrophilic and hydrophobic compounds better, provide better moisture, and have emollient and occlusive properties by forming a protective layer on the skin and maintaining skin hydration longer. The purpose of this study was to determine the physical properties of methanol extract cream preparations of ashitaba herb. The research method used was laboratory experimental. Ashitaba herb was extracted using the sonication method with 80% methanol solvent to produce a solid extract. The ashitaba herb's methanol extract was combined to create a cream preparation, and its physical characteristics such as homogeneity, pH, viscosity, spreadability, adhesion, and cream type were assessed. The physical property testing revealed that the cream preparation had a unique scent, a thick consistency, and a green hue. This resulted in a homogenous oil-in-water (O/W) type cream preparation with a pH of 6.29, viscosity of 37.050 cp, spreadability of 5.23 cm, and adhesion of 4.59 seconds. Thus, it can be said that the production of the methanol extract of ashitaba herb cream satisfies the requirements and has good physical qualities.
