Abstract

Body malodor results from the bacterial breakdown of apocrine gland secretions, with Staphylococcus epidermidis identified as a key contributor. Conventional deodorants often rely on synthetic compounds that may cause skin irritation or pose long-term health risks. This study aimed to formulate and assess an antibacterial roll-on deodorant containing methanolic extract of Spatholobus littoralis Hassk., a Kalimantan-native medicinal plant known for its antibacterial properties. The extract, prepared via maceration, was incorporated into a multiphase emulsion base comprising zinc ricinoleate, aluminum potassium sulfate, Carbopol 940, triethanolamine, Lexemul CS20, BHT, and phenoxyethanol. The formulations were evaluated for their physicochemical characteristics—pH, spreadability, adhesiveness, and homogeneity—as well as antibacterial activity against S. epidermidis using the disc diffusion assay. The extract-containing formulations (F1–F3) exhibited a beige color, herbal aroma, and uniform texture. The pH values (4.12–4.35) were within the dermally acceptable range. The spreadability varied from 4.59 to 4.81?cm, while the adhesiveness ranged from 0.34?s to 5.25?min, indicating favorable application and retention properties. Antibacterial testing showed inhibition zones of 10.40–12.37?mm, comparable to a commercial control (p?>?0.05). These findings suggest that S. littoralis extract is a potential natural, skin-compatible antibacterial agent for topical deodorant applications

Abstract

Banana peel waste is frequently discarded without proper management, potentially causing long-term environmental problems. However, banana peels can be valorized as a renewable feedstock for ethanol production. This study employed a quantitative experimental design consisting of four main stages: sample preparation, sulfuric acid hydrolysis, yeast fermentation with fermentation time variations of 72, 120, and 168 h, and ethanol content analysis. The ethanol content obtained from Raja banana (Musa acuminata) peels at fermentation times of 72, 120, and 168 h was 15%, 16%, and 17%, respectively. Meanwhile, ethanol yields from Kepok banana (Musa paradisiaca L.) peels at the same fermentation durations were 17.66%, 20.33%, and 22.33%, respectively. The results indicated that the highest ethanol content for both Raja and Kepok banana peels was achieved at a fermentation time of 168 h. Friedman test analysis revealed significance values of 0.368 (> 0.05) for Raja banana peels and 0.097 (> 0.05) for Kepok banana peels, indicating no statistically significant differences in ethanol content among the three fermentation durations. Overall, an increasing trend in ethanol content was observed for both banana varieties with prolonged fermentation time; however, statistical analysis confirmed that the differences were not significant across the tested fermentation periods.

Abstract

Coconut shell liquid smoke contains various volatile compounds with potential biological activities that can be explored through computational approaches. This study aimed to predict the potential biological activities of volatile compounds identified in coconut shell liquid smoke using the PASS Online platform as an initial computational screening approach to identify promising natural bioactive compounds for further pharmacological investigation and drug discovery. Five representative volatile compounds reported in previous studies, namely 2-hydroxymethylphenol, 3-methoxybenzene-1,2-diol, 2-methoxyphenol, 2,6-dimethoxyphenol, and 4-methyl-1,2-benzenediol, were selected for analysis. Prediction of biological activities was performed using PASS Online based on the probability of activity (Pa) and probability of inactivity (Pi) values. The results showed that all compounds exhibited high potential biological activities with Pa values above 0.900. The dominant predicted activities included aspulvinone dimethylallyltransferase inhibitor, feruloyl esterase inhibitor, JAK2 expression inhibitor, membrane integrity agonist, and ubiquinol-cytochrome-c reductase inhibitor. Several compounds also demonstrated potential activities related to anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial mechanisms. The predicted activity profiles suggest that volatile phenolic compounds in coconut shell liquid smoke may represent promising candidates for further bioactivity exploration. However, these computational predictions require experimental validation through in vitro and in vivo studies before their biological potential can be confirmed.

Abstract

Abstract

Meatballs (Bakso) are processed meat products that are widely consumed in Indonesia. Owing to their high moisture and protein content, meatballs are highly susceptible to microbial spoilage, leading some vendors to illegally use formaldehyde as a preservative to extend shelf life. Prolonged consumption of formaldehyde-contaminated foods may pose serious health risks. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Averrhoa bilimbi (belimbing wuluh) juice in reducing formaldehyde levels in meatballs and to determine the most effective juice concentration. A randomized pretest–posttest experimental design was employed using 12 commercial beef meatball samples collected from a local market in Pontianak and spiked with formaldehyde under laboratory conditions. The samples were treated with 30, 40, and 50% A. bilimbi juice for 60 min. Formaldehyde concentrations were quantified and validated using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The results demonstrated a significant reduction in formaldehyde levels after juice application. The reductions achieved with 30%, 40%, and 50% juice were 27.07%, 28.78%, and 65.80%, respectively. In conclusion, formaldehyde reduction increased with increasing juice concentration, with the 50% treatment producing the greatest reduction (65.80%). Further studies using naturally contaminated food samples are required to verify the effectiveness and practical applicability of this approach.   Keywords: Averrhoa bilimbi, Belimbing Wuluh, formaldehyde, meatball, Spectrofotometry UV-Vis

Abstract

Background:  Peptic ulcer disease with melena is commonly encountered in clinical practice. Pantoprazole is widely used to control bleeding and heal ulcers, but there is still debate regarding the effectiveness of intermittent bolus administration compared to continuous infusion. Objective: To review and evaluate the literature on the comparative effectiveness of pantoprazole administered via intermittent bolus versus continuous infusion. Methods: This study employed a narrative literature review design. Literature searches were conducted in the PubMed, Google Scholar, ProQuest, and Sage Journals databases for publications from 2020 to 2025 using the keywords: “pantoprazole,” “continuous infusion,” “intermittent bolus,” “effectiveness,” “bleeding,” and “peptic ulcer disease”.Result: Four articles met the inclusion criteria. Two studies reported no significant difference between intermittent bolus and continuous infusion administration. One study found that intermittent bolus administration was associated with a shorter length of stay, whereas another recommended continuous infusion for patients at high risk of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. There was heterogeneity in study design and reported outcomes. Conclusion: There is no significant difference between continuous infusion and intermittent bolus administration of pantoprazole; given the limited number and quality of studies, further research is needed.

Abstract

The growing challenge of antimicrobial resistance, compounded by the adverse effects of prolonged antibiotic regimens and surging healthcare costs, has driven the search for naturally derived alternative therapeutics. Alpinia galanga (L.) Willd., locally recognized as white galangal, occupies a central role in Indonesian ethnomedicine and culinary practices, making it a highly relevant subject for pharmacological screening. This study sought to evaluate the inhibitory capacity of A. galanga rhizome aqueous extracts against the clinical pathogens Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Disk diffusion assays performed at four concentration gradients (25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%) demonstrated a clear dose-dependent antibacterial profile. For S. aureus, the resulting inhibition zone diameters were 7.36, 8.31, 8.93, and 9.94 mm, respectively. Parallel testing against E. coli yielded corresponding inhibition zones of 7.35, 8.07, 8.73, and 9.80 mm across the same concentrations. This investigation highlights the practical relevance of aqueous-based extraction, which accurately reflects traditional preparation methods, thereby validating its ethnopharmacological application. The empirical evidence confirms the extract's efficacy against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains. Such robust inhibitory activity not only reinforces its potential as a natural therapeutic agent but also establishes a scientific basis for its sustained use within traditional medicine frameworks.
