Abstract

This study examines the comparative effects of aerobic dance and cycling on the psychological well-being of adolescent girls in Indonesia, a country where mental health awareness among youth is growing yet remains under-implemented in educational settings. As physical education increasingly seeks cost-effective and accessible methods to promote mental wellness, this research provides valuable insights. Sixty tenth-grade female students aged 15–16 were selected via random sampling and assigned to a 2×2 factorial experimental design. Data were collected using a validated psychological well-being questionnaire and analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD test at a significance level of 0.05. The results revealed three main findings: (1) aerobic dance significantly outperformed cycling in improving psychological well-being; (2) participants with higher fitness levels exhibited better psychological outcomes than those with lower fitness; and (3) a significant interaction effect was observed between exercise type and fitness level, with the most significant improvement seen in high-fitness participants who engaged in aerobic dance. These findings emphasize the importance of considering both exercise modality and physical fitness level in designing school-based interventions to promote adolescent mental health.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate changes in students' cardiorespiratory capacity at the Faculty of Mineral and Energy Engineering (FTME) UPN "Veteran" Yogyakarta during the first two semesters of the 2024/2025 academic year. Fitness measurements were conducted using the Multistage Fitness Test (MFT) on 154 male students at the beginning of semester 1 and the end of semester 2 to obtain VO2max estimates. During the two semesters, students took Physical Education courses once a week (±100 minutes/session), which included fitness exercises, team sports (basketball, soccer, and handball), and basic motor skills training. The training intensity was moderate and did not apply the principle of progressivity. The analysis showed no significant difference between the pre-test VO2max score (83.05) and the post-test score (83.04; p = 0.978). The stability of this value indicates that the physical activity program that lasted for two semesters did not provide sufficient physiological stimulus to increase aerobic capacity. These findings were analyzed using the principles of overload, diminishing returns, and homeostasis, which state that improving fitness requires progressive and intense exercise stimuli. This study recommends applying structured exercise methods, such as HIIT and periodization, to promote more significant physiological adaptations among engineering students.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of exercise methods (aerobic and anaerobic) and Body Mass Index (BMI) categories on the improvement of physical fitness in students, measured through VO₂max, using a 2 × 2 quasi-factorial experimental design on 28 Chemical Engineering students at UPN Veteran Yogyakarta who took the Sports II course in volleyball. The results indicated that the aerobic exercise group with low BMI experienced the greatest increase in VO2max (3.94), while the anaerobic exercise group with high BMI recorded the smallest increase (2.27). The two-way ANOVA test showed that the exercise method did not have a significant effect on the increase in VO2max(F(calculated) 0.362 < F(table) 4.26), while the BMI factor had a significant effect (F(calculated) 6.392 > F(table) 4.26), where students with low BMI obtained higher increases than students with high BMI. The interaction test between exercise method and BMI was not significant (F(calculated) 0.021 < F(table) 4.26), indicating that both factors worked independently. Thus, it can be concluded that BMI status is a dominant factor in the increase in students' VO2max, while both aerobic and anaerobic exercise types are equally effective but not significantly different.

Abstract
