Abstract

Background: The rapid proliferation of digital information has intensified the need for robust information literacy (IL) competencies in higher education. Many Library and Information Science (LIS) curricula rely on decontextualized instructional designs, which often limit students' ability to apply these critical skills within authentic social frameworks. Purpose: This study evaluates the efficacy of a Project-Based Service Learning (PjBSL) model, developed using the ADDIE instructional framework, in enhancing the applied information literacy outcomes of undergraduate LIS students. Methods: The researchers employed a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design involving 60 students. Participants were divided into experimental and control cohorts (n = 30 per group). Data were synthesized from expert validation, student practicality surveys, ACRL-aligned performance rubrics, and standardized learning assessments. Findings: The PjBSL model demonstrated exceptional validity (ICC = 0.922) and high practicality (M = 89.3). Notably, the experimental group showed significant performance gains over the control group (p < 0.001), supported by a remarkably large effect size (d = 2.61). Originality/Value: The findings indicate that integrating structured community-based projects transforms information literacy from a theoretical exercise into a socially contextualized practice. This research offers a scalable pedagogical shift for LIS education, bridging the gap between classroom instruction and real-world application.

Abstract

The digital transformation in the information environment has driven changes in information-seeking behavior among students, with YouTube becoming a primary source of educational content. However, the ease of access to digital information raises issues related to information credibility, necessitating critical evaluation skills for the information consumed. This study aims to describe Padang State University students' perceptions of the credibility of information in Ferry Irwandi's YouTube content. This study employed a descriptive quantitative method with a sample size of 100 respondents, determined using the Slovin formula from a population of 45,955 students and selected through purposive sampling. Data collection was conducted through a four-point Likert-scale questionnaire structured based on Information Credibility Theory, encompassing three dimensions: source credibility, content quality, and presentation. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics in the form of frequency distributions and mean values using SPSS. The results showed that students' perceptions of information credibility were in the high category with an overall mean value of 3.37. The source credibility dimension was in the high category with a score of 3.38, the information content quality dimension was 3.33, and the information presentation method dimension was in the high category with the highest score of 3.41. These findings indicate that students tend to assess the credibility of information based on clarity of delivery, argument structure, and visual support, compared to in-depth evaluation of the information source. Overall, Ferry Irwandi's YouTube content was perceived as credible by Padang State University students. However, improvements are still needed in the ability to critically evaluate information sources, as some students still use a heuristic approach in assessing information.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the high vulnerability of rare collections to physical, chemical, and biological deterioration, particularly in tropical environments with limited environmental control. Despite their substantial historical and cultural value, preservation strategies in specialized libraries remain insufficiently integrated and optimized. This study aims to analyze rare collection preservation strategies at the UPT Bung Hatta Proclamator Library based on the Preservation Pyramid Theory and to identify the supporting and inhibiting factors affecting their implementation. A qualitative approach with a case study design was employed. Six informants were purposively selected, comprising the head of preservation, preservation team members, a conservator, librarians, and a user. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. The findings reveal that preservation strategies have been implemented across four levels: preventive conservation, passive conservation, active conservation, and restoration, with preventive conservation as the dominant strategy. These efforts include environmental control using dehumidifiers, silica gel, and thermohygrometers, as well as restricted access policies. However, several limitations remain, including budget constraints, suboptimal storage facilities, and inconsistent documentation practices. Active conservation and restoration have been relatively well implemented with support from trained conservators, although technical constraints persist. The study concludes that rare collection preservation at the UPT Bung Hatta Proclamator Library has been implemented but is not yet fully integrated across strategic and operational levels. Its contribution lies in demonstrating the relevance of the Preservation Pyramid Theory for evaluating rare collection management in specialized libraries and emphasizing the need for stronger institutional policies, preservation-standard facilities, and enhanced human resource capacity to ensure sustainable rare collection preservation.

Abstract

The rapid expansion of information technology has transformed students’ learning environments, requiring not only the ability to access digital information but also the capacity to regulate learning independently. However, the relationship between digital literacy and self-regulated learning in higher education remains insufficiently examined, particularly among Library and Information Science students. This study aims to identify the levels of digital literacy and self-regulated learning and to examine the effect of digital literacy on self-regulated learning among students of the Library and Information Science Program at Universitas Negeri Padang. A quantitative approach was employed, involving a population of 259 students, from which 72 respondents were selected through stratified proportional sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire based on validated indicators and analyzed using simple linear regression. The findings show that both digital literacy and self-regulated learning are at a high level. The regression results indicate that digital literacy has a positive and statistically significant effect on self-regulated learning (Y = 11.107 + 0.670X; p < .05), with a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.378, indicating that digital literacy explains 37.8% of the variance in self-regulated learning. These findings demonstrate that digital literacy plays an important role in enhancing students’ ability to plan, monitor, and evaluate their learning processes. This study contributes to the literature on digital learning and information science by providing empirical evidence of the relationship between digital literacy and self-regulated learning. Practically, the findings imply that strengthening digital literacy through curriculum integration and instructional strategies is essential to support autonomous learning and improve the quality of higher education.
