Abstract

This study examines the tradition of building "batu na pir" in Silalahi II Village as a means of enhancing the social status of the local community. The research aims to analyze the prestige associated with batu na pir, employing an exploratory qualitative method with the theoretical framework of habitus, arena, and capital by Bourdieu. The findings reveal that batu na pir, which serves as a repository for the remains of ancestors, is a longstanding tradition of the Batak Toba people, maintained due to their strong belief in the power of ancestral spirits. The size and grandeur of batu na pir play a significant role in elevating the social status of its owner, leading the community to compete in constructing larger and more luxurious batu na pir. This study recommends education to prevent unhealthy competition and emphasizes the importance of preserving the tradition's original purpose as a form of respect for ancestors. Abstract

The palm leaf craft industry in Bona Village has flourished since the 1950s, coinciding with the popularity of Kecak dance performances. This qualitative research explores women’s involvement and gender-based roles in the industry. Observations and interviews with eight informants revealed a stark division of labor: men generally operate the machines, while women dominate the manual weaving techniques. Women’s roles are crucial at every stage. In the pre-production stage, they collect raw materials. During the production process, women are responsible for washing, cutting, dyeing, and shaping the palm leaves into finished products. In the distribution stage, they distribute their products to local collectors and art markets outside the village. Although not the primary source of income for most families, this industry holds significant economic and social value, contributing to the cultural identity of Bona Village. Balinese women in Bona Village not only fulfill reproductive and socio-religious functions but also play key roles in production, possessing economic sovereignty. These findings confirm the existence of a cultural meritocracy in which women serve as social shock absorbers in the face of crises. Theoretically, this research enriches contextual feminist studies on the relationship between Balinese culture, gender relations, and the household economy. Practically, this study provides recommendations for strengthening women's bargaining power in the traditional crafts industry and recognizing their complex role as drivers of the national economy in the postmodern era.

Abstract

The habit of throwing garbage into the river that has been carried out for generations by the Balinese people, including in Sulangai Village, is currently no longer relevant. This is due to changes in the types of waste produced. If in the past most of the waste was organic and easily decomposed, now most of the waste that is thrown away consists of non-organic waste that is difficult to decompose, such as plastic and other synthetic materials. This practice is not in line with the government program that has designated Petang District as a pilot project for a waste-free area and the use of plastic bags. Based on the results of previous research in Sulangai Village, it was found that the behavior of throwing garbage into the river was influenced by two main factors: first, habits that have been carried out for generations; and second, the location of the temporary waste disposal site (TPS) which is too far from community organizations. To overcome this problem, this community service activity was carried out as an effort to reduce waste in the river area and encourage changes in community behavior. The activity began with an audience with the Sulangai Village government to build synergy. Furthermore, the provision and handover of carts to waste residents was carried out. Usually, with the availability of more accessible transportation facilities, residents can start throwing garbage into carts, which will then be collected and disposed of at TPS. Through this social service activity, it is hoped that a cleaner and healthier environment can be created, as well as being a stimulant for changes in residents' behavior in managing household waste more responsibly.
