Abstract

The Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit tree contains pharmacologically active compounds and can easily be found in abundant quantities. The utilization of this tree as a source of nutraceuticals would increase its value. The extraction yields show the number of compounds that have been extracted by solvent. However, Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit seeds also contain mimosine, which can cause hair loss. The present study investigated the process of removing mimosine from the seeds. Three treatments were applied to these seeds: treatment without soaking, soaking with distilled water for 24 hours, and splitting the seeds in half and then soaking with distilled water for 24 hours. The seeds were dried, ground, and then extracted with different concentrations of ethanol solvent. The mimosine levels of the extracts were measured with a JascoV-730 spectrophotometer using ferry chloride as a reagent. The results showed that the soaking process and the concentration of ethanol had significant effects on the extract yields and mimosine levels. The unsoaked seeds, extracted with 70% ethanol, produced the highest ratio of extract yield to mimosine level. Therefore, 70% ethanol can be used as a solvent to utilize unsoaked seeds as nutraceuticals.

Abstract

Rosella, also known as Hibiscus sabdariffa L., is a plant that contains anthocyanin compounds in its calyx, which are known for their antioxidant properties. These compounds give the plant a captivating red color and can be used as natural dyes. This study aimed to exploit anthocyanins in rosella calyx as natural dyes and antioxidants in lip cream product. The formulations employed extracts from rosella calyx, a viscous extract from maceration in 96% ethanol (F1) and a commercially available powdered rosella extract (F2). Evaluation on the formulations demonstrated that both F1 and F2 effectively maintained the color integrity of the lip cream. Moreover, an irritation test among 10 respondents showed no adverse reactions. Additionally, a hedonic test of 30 respondents revealed uniformity in homogeneity, odor, and spreadability on both formulations. However, a noticeable contrast emerged in color intensity, with F2 exhibiting greater intensity and preference over F1. The rosella calyx extract also demonstrated its antioxidant potential with an IC50 value of 130.11 ± 2.08 µg/ml. The study highlights the utility of rosella calyx extracts as a dual-functioning component in lip cosmetics. The findings indicate the variations in formulation efficacy and color intensity, emphasizing the potential of rosella-derived extracts in developing cosmetics with enhanced aesthetic appeal and functional antioxidant attributes.

Abstract

The use of herbs for health purposes has been practiced for thousands of years, long before the discovery of synthetic chemical drugs. Indonesia is widely recognized for its vast biodiversity, boasting approximately 30,000 plant species, equivalent to 75% of the total plant species worldwide, earning it the title of a mega-centre of global biodiversity. This highlights Indonesia's enormous potential in the traditional medicine industry, with the capability to compete on a global scale. However, several challenges hinder the development of traditional raw materials and the production of traditional medicines. These include herbal raw materials that fail to meet quality standards, a non-conducive business climate, limited technological advancements in the extraction and production of raw materials, uneven distribution of third-party laboratories across Indonesia which making it difficult for small and medium-sized industries to access product testing facilities, the exclusion of traditional medicines from the National Health Insurance (JKN) program, and a lack of empirical evidence for many plants with potential as traditional medicines. To address these challenges, intensive support and synergy from the government and legislative bodies are essential to enact policies that accelerate the growth of the traditional medicine industry. Additionally, strong collaboration with business actors, academics, and community organizations is crucial to fostering self-sufficiency in traditional medicine raw materials.

Abstract

Green coffee beans (Coffea canephora Pierre ex A. Froehner) contain caffeine and chlorogenic acid which are beneficial for health. These two main ingredients can be extracted using Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NADES) in combination with the Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction (UAE) method which is environmentally friendly. NADES can be used for extracting green coffee beans, but the solvent cannot be evaporated, thus the result is a liquid extract. During storage, liquid extracts are susceptible to oxidation and bacterial growth so that they can disrupt physical, chemical, and microbiological stabilities. In this study, butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) was added as a synthetic antioxidant and a combination of methylparaben-propylparaben as preservative to determine its effect on the physical, chemical, and microbiological stability of the NADES liquid extract of green coffee beans, as well as to determine the best storage temperature. The concentrations of BHT added in this study were 10, 20, and 30 ppm. The concentration of the methyl paraben:propyl paraben combination added was 110:55 ppm, 100:50 ppm, and 90:45 ppm. Each extract was stored at storage temperatures of -20°C ± 5°C, 5°C ± 3°C, and 30°C ± 2°C for 54 days. The results showed that the liquid extract added with 30 ppm BHT concentration and a combination of preservatives with a concentration of 110:55 ppm and stored at a storage with the temperature of -20°C ± 5°C which had the best physical, chemical, and microbiological stability. This shows that the addition of BHT and a combination of preservatives can increase the stability of the green coffee bean NADES extract.
