Abstract

Speaking is a crucial communicative competence in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context. This study aims to investigate internal and external factors influencing students’ daily use of oral English in the English Study Program at Universitas Riau. This study employed an explanatory sequential mixed-method design. Quantitative data were collected via a validated 30-item questionnaire administered to 75 sophomore students, followed by Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) to explore qualitative insights. Data were analyzed using SPSS (descriptive statistics) and thematic analysis. The findings revealed that internal factors, such as anxiety, self-efficacy, motivation, vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, accuracy, and grammar, continue to shape students’ spoken English practices. Psychological barriers such as fear of judgment and low confidence were present but not dominant. Linguistic barriers, especially limited vocabulary and pronunciation issues, emerged as more prominent. Externally, limited practice opportunities, passive classroom interaction, and curriculum-practice misalignment reduced students’ exposure to real-life spoken English. The integration of findings suggests that while psychological and cultural resistance to speaking English is relatively low, linguistic and environmental challenges remain significant. The lack of supportive speaking environments and communicative pedagogies hampers students’ ability to apply English meaningfully outside the classroom. At last, addressing the underuse of oral English among EFL learners requires targeted pedagogical interventions and curriculum reforms that embed practical oral activities and foster positive peer-speaking culture.

Abstract

This research aimed to determine the effect of using Wordwall.net in the teaching of vocabulary to seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 7 Tualang. This study was motivated by the vocabulary gap experienced by students who switched from elementary schools implementing the 2013 Curriculum, where English is an elective subject, and in junior high schools implementing the Merdeka Curriculum, where English is a core subject. The research used a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. The sample consisted of 29 students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through vocabulary tests administered before and after treatment using Wordwall.net. The data analysis technique used is descriptive analysis. The data acquired in the Sig. column (2-tailed) is 0.000 (0.000 0.05). Besides, the value of t-count is higher than t-table (t-count t-table), which is 26.224 (26.224 2.048). It means that Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. So, it can be concluded that the use of Wordwall.net has a significant effect on students' vocabulary mastery of seventh-grade students of SMP Negeri 7 Tualang. It is suggested that teachers incorporate Wordwall.net as a supporting medium to enhance vocabulary learning in an interactive and enjoyable way.

Abstract

In communicating, people may express themselves in a particular communication channel, spoken or written. For instance, people may use direct and indirect communication as their message’s perceived meaning varies depending on the tone of the messages. As a result, they may apply different levels of politeness. This research investigated politeness strategies used by George W. Bush in his presidential acceptance speeches. The researcher collected the data used in this research from the transcripts of Bush's two victory speeches (2000 and 2004). The analysis based on Brown and Levinson’s (1987) classification of politeness strategies. The research findings showed that George W. Bush applied the positive strategy as his most dominant politeness strategies, such as Pay more attention, give recognition or sympathy to the hearer and Offer helps or promises sub-strategies. This research also revealed the factors affecting Bush's politeness in speaking, among others; social status, interest, and solidarity. However, Bush did not show any unambiguous and disguised manner as he attempted to build the citizens' trust in him.
